Matten filters, the "upgrade" of the sponge filter might not be all they're hyped up to be, let's talk about why they suck!

they are great, although expensive, until you realize you will make a chocolate milkshake out of your tank when you go to remove it for cleaning

But what is nice is that you rarely need to clean them. I have had 8, 45ppi running for two years. The waterline behind hasn't dropped yet. So no need to clean. Mulm will build up behind it, but thats just more inert surface area.

I like to plant epiphytes in matten filters and create living walls in the tank.

When I had to my matten filter I had it on my 75 and 55 what I did was put it on the short side with a pump behind it. When it came to maintenance after taking it out the 1st and only time I used a "cheap" pump off of ebay that had a nozzle adapter to suck out the gunk....... Can't wait for the other part of the review but that's what I did oh the foam was 3" thick 20ppi and worked like a charm for even fancy goldfish with sand substrate

Bought one from SwissTropicals on a 125G where it takes the entire side of the tank. Tank has an Oscar and three Blue Acaras, I’ve never had to clean the filter in over two years. I do dose Bio-Clean after every water change which I’ve noticed keeps all my filters clean for years.

So in Germany one variant that I really like is called the mobile matten filter. It is a vertical rectangle and it has a glass base allowing you to remove it when necessary. The inside is hollow and you can fill it with media and they can either be pump or air powered. I am currently using one on a 75 gallon and it is working well. Also it is the quietest Filter I have ever used and only needs 2,3 watts. So I would recommend checking these out. They are really amazing.

@@Handygrrl I thought I replied earlier but apologies it doesn’t seem to have showed up. Maybe I can’t put the website name here bc it’s seen as marketing, but it is HMFshop. Just put that in your search engine and you’ll get the website. It’s a German company. I think they may have a patent but they should expand operations if they don’t sell in other countries.

One positive thing is that there is an excellent fry chamber behind with slow flow. Provided that a small filter is mounted on the pipe. I use a powerhead. I used to put my fattest Molly in the filter chamber.

Thank you BP for the series that you have been doing a solid job for sure !!!! It's not a surprise for the fact that you probably have the bulk of these filter types buried subconsciously inside your righht side , or is it the left 🤔 Seriously though I have been enjoying the education and the one thing I have been consistent with is my ability to forget something that I had figured out along the way.

I've never used one and would like to on a couple ten gallon tanks turned sideways. I've seen a few videos on these and the biggest problems were the substrate issue as you mentioned, but also the amount of mess created trying to remove that chunk of muck! I'll probably just skip these in favor of easier solutions. We'll see what you have to say next week that could change my mind.

When I set up my breeding rack, I am planning on using Matten filters in the 10 and 5 gallon tanks that will be mounted end-on. I figure it's the best filtration for this set-up.

My main beef with these filters which you didn’t mention is it takes away 2”-3”’s of your tank length.

Use a small water pump to drive it. It fits behind the sponge.

Yeah. I’m gonna agree with you here. Do have a shrimp tank and I’m sure it’d work well but it’s just too much hassle for me. I’ll stick to my sponge filter

Looks like one of flip aquatics matten filters. I have one in a shrimp only 10g that is fricken awesome, but bigger aquariums are a challenge.

I really don't like Matten filters for several reasons, including all the ones you mentioned. My main reason though is maintenance. Like sponges they release a lot of gunk into the tank when you take it out for cleaning, however contrary to a sponge filter, you'll struggle to put a Matten filter into a bag before lifting it out of the tank. The moment you move it, gunk goes everywhere. I also find the surface area overkill. All in all it's probably my least favorite out of all filtration methods lol. But this is just MY opinion, if you find them useful, more power to you! Oh, and I think it's also the least attractive option, there's no way to hide it from view.

I use a matten for my Axolotls. Huge surface area with minimal flow.

Can we talk about something serious? The Colorado Pet tax could ruin the hobby. It would only take one state to this tell others realize it's an easy way to tax people. This is a minimum of $8.50 per fish, invertebrates and more. It's important that we make sure people internationally are aware of this and fight it now. You will be horrified when you read it. While it's now on hold, it's only on hold until the revision. We need to be aware and voice our opinion against the people responsible before this spreads like wildfire to other states.

Never used one but have seen several over time. For those that did not want to tie up a whole side, I have seen the corner ones. I guess my question is… Does anyone ever do a horizontal setup across the bottom of a side or the back? It just seemed another option but I have never seen anyone do that. P.S. very cool series Bentley.
