I am also looking for a way to make the hair mats myself, but without an instrument, it is not easy. For now, I collect my own hair after daily brushing, also cat's hair, and poodle's hair, all separated. The plan is to wash them separately and fill pillow cases or at least small cotton or linen bags... Washing a handful portion of cat's hair became a tiny mat on it's own... I used it as a table leg bumper. Straight human hair or curly poodle hair may l not have the same result after simple hand wash. What I am trying to say, until you find a way to make more efficient hair mat, just collect them, wash them in a bucket using UNSCENTED soap, dry them inside of a pillow case with a zipper, and after they get dry, make a pillow case flat and use a thread, stitch it over. As I am thinking now, it would be better to use cheese cloth and place hair in layers after washing... then to stitch it together into cubes/squares, like those used to hold dawn/feathers in comforters. I wish there was a way to attach photos in comments on KZfaq. Hope my comment will be helpful for some.
