In my endless curiosity for testing and understanding the differences between certain technologies and their applications, I did a field test of - TA-DA! Matterport vs. Matterport!
Actually, it's more of a field test of the Z1 performance vs. the Matterport performance while using the Matterport Capture App.
Why would I do this after scanning Matterport Pro and Matterport Pro2 only for over 5 years?
Well, I had a hunch that the Z1 would perform "pretty well" in the field, and the difference in fidelity and model quality maybe not be discernible by clients. It could therefore be a viable, less expensive alternative to growing your fleet with the Pro2, while still offering Matterport scans to clients...but did it stand up to the test? What about fidelity? What about speed? I take a close examination in this new video! Can you tell the difference? Could your client?
Did you like it? Don't forget to comment and subscribe, thanks!

Very nice comparison indeed. I think it all depends upon which type of space you want to scan. Pro 2 produces very detailed images which is great when zooming into objects while in a tour like a construction site or a retail stores etc. However scanning a real estate with big objects like furniture, 360 is a better choice.

Hi, hanx for the great session, very helpful. I usually use my DSLR/Mirrorless to shoot panoramas for higher rez, and the Z1 if speed is needed, I use 3DVista for the tours. I tried the matterport approach for a clinic, and the corridors were making the job harder, output was ok, but the floorplan wasn't, also starting point was same as final point, but the tour will not connect last shot with first one, I don't know why. The building has a space in the middle that I have to go around it, does that matter? BTW, never tried the Matterport camera. regards

Emily, thanks for doing this comparison. I have been using the Pro 2 for 5 years and it finally fell off the top of my tripod because I didn’t secure it when I thought I had. Fortunately, I have a Z1 and an X. This has been very helpful and I look forward to the easy of using the Z1 in future tours. I have it packed in my drone case. Easy to carry and great with mirrors! Just did a house of mirrors when the accident occurred so I had to use my iPad to capture the space. That was tough! This has been a huge help. Do you know if the X will work with Matterport as well? Replaceable battery and memory card are huge pluses. Thanks again. Geof

@HopscotchInteractive Жыл бұрын
Hi Geof, oh man, so sorry that you have a busted Pro2! I have heard that the Matterfix guys are good at replacing them. Also, I had one go down and then Matterport at the time just charged me $500 to send me a new one...so I don't know why or how or if they would do that again, but they simply replaced it because the wifi antenna was just completely not working properly. I don't know about the X yet, I think my media producer Kevin Kunze just got one, so I can surely try it if they start to support it. I know what you mean about the battery! We bought the extension for the Z1 so we could charge it, otherwise with their design, the charger port is covered when it's on most monopods. Pro tip, switch to the Bushman V2 Monopod and get three or four center column weights and stack them on top of each other. That's been my preferred monopod for the last year and I have been through a half a dozen of them! Good luck man!

You’re correct that time is money, but quality and reputation create customer lifetime value so I am always leaning towards building trust and doing it with the Pro2 rather than cutting corners…so we aren’t using the Z1 for the Matterport tours even though we could probably offer the Z1 as an alternative, but it’s still a great option at that price point, if the clients do not have a preference

I currently use the Z1 for Matterport scans and find that I need to do alot of scans when there is lots of furniture. Does the Matterport camera require extra scans with regards to furniture? I also have an issue with rooms being correctly aligned and find I need to do a number of scans at the entrance to a new room. Again is the Matterport camera better in this regard? How long does it normally take to make a scan of a furnished 3 bedroom home? Cheers, Nick
@HopscotchInteractive
@HopscotchInteractive 2 жыл бұрын
The Matterport Pro2 camera scans just in one direction towards the objects in the room, so yes, whenever there are lots of items that occlude (hide) what is behind it, you will need to scan more. For example, a showroom with many walls will require many more scans than an open office space where the camera's depth sensors will be able to quickly ascertain the geometry. A furnished three bedroom home typically takes 45 min-1 hr, so it's slower than the Z1 + Matterport, but you're much less likely to have alignment errors if used correctly.

@@HopscotchInteractive Thank you for the update. I think I'll stay with the Z1 a little while longer as the scans are good enough at the moment and the extra time taken with the matterport camera would be an issue. @@nicholasspackman yes, that time is easily 3x with the Pro2 even if you're using the latest iPad (about :24-:27 seconds I think?) so keep that in mind, but it's a lot more foolproof and if you are keeping your clients happy with the Z1, then I would keep using it, but you will probably love the battery life and the more polished look of the Pro2 if you ever get one :)

@HopscotchInteractive
@HopscotchInteractive 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Salim, there won't be any monopod/tripod legs from a Matterport shoot since the nadir is patched. There's no need to auto-erase. If you look down at any Matterport model you won't have that problem. The Matterport is so popular because you don't have to place the scans manually in post-production, the tour is processed in the cloud, and then it comes back to you with everything where you placed it when you made the tour, with the exception of the 360's that you take outside or on a balcony, for example. The exterior garden would probably not be a part of the "3D tour", it would be a 360° panorama you include in the highlight reel. Matterport doesn't really perform that well outdoors.

@HopscotchInteractive 2 жыл бұрын
@@salimhabib5891 I am not sure matterport is the best solution for an occupied hospital, anything that moves or changes or doors opening and closing (all doors need to remain open) will make it difficult if not impossible for the camera to know where it is. You really can only successfully shoot a 3D tour if there isn’t anyone actively using the space in my experience. It would be better to just shoot 360’s and make a custom tour using any other software like seekbeak, cloudpano, or 3D Vista.
@HopscotchInteractive
@HopscotchInteractive 2 жыл бұрын
@@salimhabib5891 also if you’ve never used matterport you should definitely get experience scanning before attempting to shoot an occupied space, that’s my advice. I would imagine you’d be much better off using a Ricoh Theta camera and then saving the panos. One hack is to use the Zillow 3D home tour app and use that to remember the path and position of the panos, and to save the panos to the camera for each photo, it’s a hack but would be better than matterport in your case, you would download the images after the shoot and then edit them before building a custom tour in one of the aforementioned platforms
