A while ago, a group of my viewers decided to host a design competition, in which the winner would have their design built by me. The catch being, I was not allowed a place a vote. Instead, my fate was placed in the hands of the judges.

🕵️‍♂️ WHO AM I?:
My name is Matt Estlea, I'm a 25 year old Woodworker from Basingstoke in England and my aim is to make your woodworking less s***.
I come from 5 years tuition at Rycotewood Furniture Centre with a further 1 year working as an Artist in Residence at the Sylva Foundation, which is where I began growing my business. I then returned to Rycotewood to teach Evening Classes for 2 Years, while also teaching City and Guilds Furniture Making for 3 years. They were some long 12 hour days!
In September, 2021. I resigned from teaching at the school to focus on my own business.
In addition to all that studying and teaching during the week, I occupied my weekends working at Axminster Tools and Machinery in Basingstoke. For 5 years, I helped customers with purchasing tools, demonstrated in stores and events, and gained extensive knowledge about a variety of tools and brands. I discontinued this job role in 2019 to focus on teaching at Rycotewood and my own business.
During the week, I film woodworking projects, tutorials, reviews and a viewer favourite 'Tool Duel' where I compare two competitive manufacturers tools against one another to find out which is best. I also have a Free Online Woodworking School which you should definitely check out!
🎓VISIT THE FREE SCHOOL HERE

I like to have a laugh and my videos are quite fast paced BUT you will learn a lot, I assure you.
Lets go make a mess.

If there was someone who could make osb look good on a project like this. I expected it to look hideous, actually ended up looking almost like an inlay of cork or something and blended a lot better than I'd have imagined.

The first half of the kzfaq.infoUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

I can't say that it "deserves a sub..." thereby. Based on the quality of teaching, material, and his personal appeal, I may well subscribe. Why look at that statement carefully? It sounded weird. Should we look at anything critically? Are we able to discern differences in concepts? The question deserves examination.

The contrasting randomness of the OSB Inlay against the darker directional grains of the rest of the box... Beautiful! It seems contrary to even think of, yet that minimalist addition of OSB actually kind of makes this stand out against other similar boxes.

The winning designer is definitely your "Lex Luther" type of fan. Your "Challenge Accepted" and deep thought at points means he really did challenge you. Turned out great. Even the OSB inlay looks great as an accent, and I really did not think it would. The jig to hold the top flat for assembly was a "next level" solution and it would have taken many of us much longer to do that jig. Your ingenuity has come a long way, young man. This is why I enjoy your channel, You help me think not only outside of the box, but around the corners as well. I can most assuredly learn something from channels like yours, Torbjorn's, Pask's, and many others. Thanks.

@@chrisanthony579 I am a craftsman like this and I am incredibly happy that Matt and many others are making these videos. My own career is a result of some of these early videos and it's affected my life in many positive and surprising ways. Don't be sad! We need people to get inspired and interested and join our ranks. @@ruben9912 I don't mean any disrespect to the folks that do the KZfaq thing. Actually I learn a lot from many of these very talented people and the industry needs people to inspire. My point being that for many of these gifted craftsmen like Matt, its sad that there's much more money in making video's than actually crafting and trying to make a living in woodworking. Those talented people that try to make a living working wood are making cabinets and book shelves. For the most part the market doesn't allow them to show their true talents.

Hand planing OSB is something I never expected to see but works a treat. I feel bad for that iron though
@1pcfred
@1pcfred 3 жыл бұрын
The iron doesn't care. It is an inanimate object. Feel bad for the poor slob that has to sharpen it. We need a new video series titled, "Can You Hand Plane It?" Where the host hand planes various unlikely materials in each episode and we see what kind of finish is achieved and how the tool fares doing it. I've personally hand planed some pretty odd stuff myself. You can hand plane Plexiglass for instance. Works pretty good.

Good to see you making something again. It was very anxious for me to see that side dovetails on short grain to fit. I would probably not dare to do so unless I reinforce side rails with long grain stips below (somewhat like plywood).

Matt, Well done Mate! I remember thinking that it would be a bit of a tricky build when I saw the design. I applaud your sticking true tot he design. A testament to your skills for certain. ...and I DO hope you were at least given a fresh cold pint after all that (though the delivery was a riot! I needed that laugh desperately just now.)

I thought he was gonna drop the box and broke the glass or something. However, the straight forward ending is technically subverting my expectations. Cheers.

This is the backwards box! Usually people use cheap osb and then try and hide it using a quality veneer, not the otherway around! 😂😂
