The Sooty show was a highlight of my childhood, and what's struck me when watching old episodes was how much I find myself chuckling away, mainly for sweep and how natural Corbett is at comedy, he just has a feel for it, it comes across in this interview as well! Fantastic.

I met Matthew once, at a Sooty live show in Perth. He was so kind and fun. This man has contributed SO much to the world’s collective sense of wonder and humour. I hope he realises what a worthy life he has led.

Been watching sooty because we showed it to my 2 year old and he loves it. What a great set of characters. Never thought I'd enjoy it as much as an adult as I did as a kid, but I appreciate it so much more now. Matthew Corbett and his father gave us so much great entertainment that will hopefully live on forever.

OMG! Hero from my childhood! For my 5th birthday I got the Sooty Sweep and Sue puppets! I was heartbroken when he left. The two people who took over from him didn't cut it for me. The woman's acting was way over the top and the guy was trying to emulate Matthew. Above anyone in the world, Matthew is someone I'd love to hug.

I met Matthew Corbett four years ago at the premiere of a documentary series about Sooty in Guiseley. I even had my picture taken with him! It was a great moment for me, as I'd grown up watching him through videos and DVDs of The Sooty Show and Sooty and Co

Oh, and you haven't changed very much at all. It's so heartwarming to know that someone I grew up idolising almost as much as Brian Cant and Derek Grifiths (almost) is much the same as he ever was. How awesome that truly is. Thanks for all those good days!

Sooty was part of my childhood in the 70s, so I had the honour of seeing both Harry *and* Matthew Corbett running the show.

I watched sooty when I was five years old everyday before school..happy days!!

Still fantastic, but never got to see him live, twas at the regal in Worksop when I thought I would, Was Five years old and was my first appearence on stage. Played an old women, now you can never get me off it as played in many amature theatre shows and some at the regal too. Connie Creighton was there when I went up on the stage as I peeped into the wings and she gave me a great big smile. I so wished I had gotten her autograph. Now 41, I still would go and watch a sooty show as still fasinated on how it all works and would love to be part of the sooty show team. Would see if my friends children would like to go see it.

To the person who was confused how long Harry and Matthew did the shows, Harry started in 1952 and although Matthew took over as main presenter in 1976, Harry still appeared on the show up until 1977, where he did a segment called 'Harry Remembers'. Matthew first appeared on the show in 1973, as a guest with Gerry Marsden on a regular basis and of course his last show was in 1998. So that's how both did the show for 25 years. Hope this explains it!

Really enjoyed watching this (even if it's almost 5 years too late!) Grew up with sooty throughout the eighties and nineties, still remember the episode with Geoff Capes, which we had on cassette. Best wishes to Matthew/Peter for the future, must have been difficult to give up the bear, but sometimes you've just got to move on :D

He may well have been all about the money but he made an unforgettable show out of those puppets. His mild grumpiness only made it even better as it was incredibly funny watching those three cause mayhem for him. I miss you Matthew / Peter!

It's a shame that he's taken full retirement now. He was semi-retired before, but he got the Coronavirus and spent some time in hospital. Luckily, he recovered, but he decided that he was going to move from Lymm in Cheshire to a retirement community in Horsham, Sussex.

So weird at calling Matthew, 'Peter'. And yes, I was shocked at his 'F' word (even though it was done in a Liverpudlian accent) :D

Matthew Corbett is one of my favourite classic presenters. He's so awesome. Eric Thompson is one of my favourite classic narrators. So basically, Matthew had a dad called Harry Corbett and Eric had a daughter called Emma Thompson.

I watched this guy growing up in the 80's. My son now watches him too as he prefers the episodes with Mathew in them. He still likes Richard but his favourite episodes are all the early 90's ones

I loved the Sooty show as a child and have always found Matthew charismatic and funny but it's disappointing to hear him say in such a flippant manner that he knew what Saville was up to. Sad to think that Matthew maybe didn't care so much about children as you would hope someone idolized by so many would.

I don't know the ins and outs of what happened between Harry and Peter, I just know that looking back at Harry's performances on youtube (I am too young to remember him performing) he really LOVED Sooty. Sooty, Sweep and Soo were all inventions of Harry's fertile mind and he was extremely dexterous too - Sooty really was alive in his hands. It must have broken Harry's heart not to be able to perform with him and see Peter take the show from him. Also it is distasteful that Peter used the vile Savile to get rubberneckers going to his show. Extremely cynical move and one that probably backfired.

Matthew Corbett is the epitome of the advice that you should never meet your hero. I've lost a huge amount of respect for him when he openly admitted that he knew exactly what Saville was up to but did sod all about it.

Do you miss your furry friend? "Uh, No. Not really. Well, in a sense I do." I'll bet it felt strange to him at first when he first said bye-bye to Sooty. Still, I'd rather listen to one of my childhood heroes being blatantly "honest" then hear a pack of lies. :) He, He! Now, I see where the Sooty I loved growing up got his cheekiness from. Peter inherited it from Harry then Peter gave it to "Matthew" in 'The Sooty Show'. Just watch his facial expressions about @ 1:31 and @ 5:37.

Hopefully he did then...he just seems rather light hearted about it in this and comes across like he's mentioning it to get more people to see the show which got to me a little :/ It just seems like a heck of a lot of famous people have said they knew about it but didn't actually do anything...

Does anyone know if there's any recordings of his "25 Years Of Sticking Your Hand Up Sooty's Bum"? I'd really be interested to see/hear that show and all of those stories. Maybe Matthew could write an autobiography or something. He's not on social media at all and I don't know if there's any way that fans can contact him.

I'm surprised as to how his voice has changed and how many times he says the word bum. He certainly looks different but you can tell it's him. I've been to Lymn and it's lovely, rural and he's lucky to live there! Makes me miss the North.... I always knew instinctively even as a kid that although he is was and is brilliant and funny with Sooty and the gang he was not a sentimental man and almost resented his role, there was that edge there. Harry clearly loved Sooty, though for me he isn't as funny and as talented as Matthew. I like Richard best as he has a warm gentle kindness but also a potty sense of humour. Matthew said he knew about Saville, is he just saying that out of hindsight or to generate interest in his talk, or did he really know? As a child I found Saville and Rolf Harris distasteful, and remember twigging Rolf was a paedophile in my late teens early twenties and I recall having a disagreement with my boyfriend Matt who had met him and thought he was cool and no way could he be a weirdo.....I do seem to have some sort of in built radar for twigging people's hidden character traits..... Thing is just how many of his contemporaries did know but didn't do anything, not just Matthew? And if it was anecdotal or actually seen it themselves? Easy to judge now but hard to say what could have been done then and of course it was a different culture.

I'm a bit confused, Harry Corbett done Sooty for 25 years and so did Matthew. But how did Sooty and Harry have been on telly in 1952 and then Matthew took over from Harry in 1976? What I mean is, Harry Corbett have done Sooty from 1952-1976 and Matthew done it from 1976-1998. Harry Corbett - 24 years, and Matthew - 22 years.

In relation to criticism about Matthew's Jimmy Savile comments, I imagine he 'knew' because the Corbetts originally came from just outside Leeds and so would have heard, first-hand, what Savile was up to. Shame there is no video of Matthew's talk as he alluded to Savile's appearance on the Russell Harty show. I would have liked to heard it and whether Matthew witnessed anything untoward. Allegedly Savile had Leeds sewn up as along with owning clubs, he was part of Gangland, very well connected with high society and Masonry, and had the police in his pocket. I understand that many local people had ideas or 'knew' what Savile was up to, but even if they could prove it, were not listened to by the police. Hospital staff in Leeds and Stoke Mandeville told children to pretend to be asleep if Savile came to visit. They 'knew' something was going on, but were powerless to stop it at that time as Savile was protected by powerful friends.

He may well have spoken up. Other people spoke up years ago and were ignored. We don't know the full story :)

I was a HUGE Sooty fan growing up and stopped watching when Matthew left, I do think think he's great. But. Hm, he just admitted to knowing about the Jimmy Saville stuff though, why didn't he speak up instead of using it as a positive in trying to plug this show? :/
