To be fair... A religion is more than an ideology. I agree with you in principle. All bad ideas must be freely and fiercely challenged and rejected - whether they are from a religion or not. However, it is true that religions are internally diverse, speak to emotions more than the intellect very often and also include behaviors, rituals and community - not just beliefs. That's what makes this topic challenging. It's also what makes bad religions so difficult to eliminate from culture. For the record, I find most religions are unhelpful. Islam is at the top of my list for "awful religions".

I think anyone with a modicum of the fundamental understanding of the religion would argue that case, as the faith states any instance of an unprovoked attack to anyone of any particular belief is directly juxtaposed in the fundamental teachings.

I'm not gonna say I'm smart and I lived in Iran for 11 years and I didn't really like Islam then, but after a few years of being in western europe, I really see that Islam has some good points and I've began to respect it. Firstly, Islam has yet to contradict itself, in terms of both the scripture and the social norms. For example, the Pope announced that LGBTQ people are okay to be christian; I have nothing against anyone choosing their own path, but when it clearly states you can't be with the same gender and you are gay then you can't be christian. Most real muslims stay true to their beliefs. Secondly, most islamic modernists are the terrorists you hear about all the time. Osama bin laden rejected the authentic teachings and stated that nothing is set into stone. I kinda went off topic but overall, Islam imo is the best religion, but I remain agnostic, and I believe like many other aspects of life, one must take the good and leave the bad.

They are mostly different based on different cultures and governments. They all have something in common though, that one thing is peace and respect. I was very respected as a white christian and never felt unsafe. Don't paint a whole religion with 1.8 billion people to one/two governments in one brush, governments does not represent the majority of the people. You want the world to be a better place? first start off with yourself, educate yourself, love yourself then loving others will happen naturally.
