I fully support this message. I always was against meditation until I desperately tried it to get out of heavy suffering. Encouraged by the science behind it (neuro-plasticity). After 8 weeks now, the positive changes in my mental state are exceptional. So for anyone hesitating: just try it out for a month. You'll feel the difference soon enough.

Well said,Brngsh I was going to state the same thing,but you got there first.We Americans especially should meditate more.Why do I say that? Because there's so many of us who are stressed,depressed and angry.Just 10 minutes a day of meditation does wonders!

Very nice. I didn't know that one. It seems especially meditations on positive feelings have great effect. Since my first comment I've been doing bodyscans and breath meditations (just attention on it) every day, and since I've added Metta meditations to that, my 'progress' really sped up.

As I have been meditating for quite some time now, I can vouch for everything he said. I would very angry for no reason. But now I am calm and confident. But yes, I still get those emotions, but the very next moment I can recognize them, which makes it easier to get rid of them.

I tend to use it less all the time because it is a little pretentious. Perhaps that is what you are feeling too. I think Buddhist Spiritual Master Matthieu Ricard would find it appropriate. It's a bit like me signing off with "Ciao" when sending a message to my Italian hairstylist. Hope this helps.

My god thankyou so much for that, I used to meditate regulary and felt so empowered by it. These days I know I should but soo many things come up it just made the idea of sitting and observing my mind & emotions unsettling and the urge to get up and carry on discracting myself the only thing to do.He reminded me that it takes time to be the observer & not get sucked in,the way he explained the act of meditation & the benifits really resonated in me & now I feel I am willing to put the effort in

Meditation has to do with ~ Stabilizing , Organizing , and Optimizing our minds ~ We meditate in order to ~ Transcend ignorance and cultivate wisdom ~ Because ignorance forms the root of our suffering ~ And the cultivation of wisdom leads to our salvation ~ To bring about a collective “ Enlightenment “ ~ We need to help others ~ Do the same ~ Only by working together and educating one another ~ Can we bring about peace and harmony in the world ~ And put an end to suffering ~

How do we know that happiness is not the natural state of our minds? Perhaps our addiction of attachment to thoughts in the stream of consciousness.. is making us block out the natural happiness of our minds? All that thought after thought makes us lose mindful awareness and lose the happiness that goes with it. When you are very focused on creating something you like, aren't you happier? Meditation is getting in touch with our natural mind.

@hexcane when you are aware of either positive or negative thoughts/emotions then you are strenghtening a faculty of mind that is called awarness. If you remain calm as well then you are cultivitaing a very special energy called mindfulness. Here, objects do not metter. good stuff, bad stuff, whatever object is fine: you remain aware of it and relaxed. Other way is to develope, on purpose, a positive state of mind, like metta, for example

I quote 'Ricard is one of the loveliest and most interesting people that I know.' In fact he was so full of praise that Ricard said that he would meditate for 20 minutes on humilty, and he was blushing so that his robes were the same colour as his robes.

Ive seen both Buddhists and Christians who get it, and those who dont. As far as I can tell, he gets it more than a lot of people I know. You can use religion to serve God and humanity or to play God and serve ego, to invite people to participate in the joy and freedom of God/love, or control and beat them over the head with it.

@BlueOctopusBoy7 жыл бұрын
The timing is not important, 20 mins a day is guideline, some meditators prefer to set an alarm so that they don't get carried away for too long. When you meditate you shouldn't be thinking about how much time has elapsed. Thanks J

You are not entirely correct, for certain individual development is important and necessary, but there is also small groups, small communities and the possibility that exists there for self and other healing together. Isn't it a big leap to go from individual to society? Isn't there anything in between? For certain there is, groups, teams, small communities where much work is lacking and needed.

I'm not sure if everything he says is factually correct but I like what he's saying. I believe that people need to realize that nature or evolution doesn't care whether your happy.We aren't wired up for contentment. Your only option is for contentment is to challenge the natural state just as this guy is attempting to do.
@msredpoll9 жыл бұрын
When I said natural state I was referring to the state of mind that evolution has brought us to not the meditative state that you are referring to. I was actually saying that this guy has the right idea.
@msredpoll8 жыл бұрын
+Abel Garmín .you've explained that brilliantly. This is exactly how I see it. If your aware of whats going on your in a far better position to deal with it. Some people took offence at my comments but I dont think they understood what I was attempting to say. You've explained it much better
@silentrotation8 жыл бұрын
+msredpoll . What if the "natural state" of your mind is already happiness.. and the unnatural that we find ourselves in is due to not seeing our natural state because we follow so much all that chatter of our thoughts? It is only when you think your mind is simply the result of your evolutionary brain that you think that is all there is naturally. But that is a big assumption, because Science (quantum physicists, neuropsychologists etc) have no idea how the brain or anything physical creates what we experience as "the mind".
@silentrotation8 жыл бұрын
+Abel Garmín . We don't see our natural state because as Buddhism says our minds are clouded over by ignorance from the beginning, like clouds cover the sun. By the beginning, Buddhism means through endless previous rebirths due to the karma set in motion by ignorance. No God involved here, and "heaven" has never been "lost" because it has never been found!
@silentrotation8 жыл бұрын
+Abel Garmín . Besides, you can't "lose" your "natural state", because it is always the nature of your own mind. You can, however, wrap it up so well you can't recognize it.
@birgendorfica13 жыл бұрын
@hexcane thoughts do not have a power on their own. All the power they got it's the one you give them. If you are giving all the power to negative thoughts, like thoughts of hatred, then such thoughts will be in charge of your life. If you are only aware of any kind of thoughts then you witness their empty nature. They appear and disappear, no power on their own. You choose thoughts you want to feed.

This assumes that all people are seeking individual transformation. Most people who are doing "meditation" are looking for relaxation and better health and fantasy - not actual mental transformation. That includes most people sitting in Dharma Centers and Zendos. We have to start with an actual definition and proper instruction in meditation as defined in the traditional disciplines - most people will last about 5 minutes. Tibetans seem very hesitant to do this - threatens their meal ticket.

Don't you really have to just observe yourself and ask the right questions about why you think and react the way you do? It all seems to come down to early conditioning an and then constant reinforcement. Oh, I am an American, that's my flag, yes and raised a Catholic, there's the cross...those others are different, Indian, Russians and so on but only superficially. They too have been conditoned the same way.
@silentrotation8 жыл бұрын
+Will Hart . Observing yourself is precisely what you do in meditation. Conditioning and reinforcement is exactly why we have to observe ourselves, so to counteract that we simply observe the stream of thoughts. Without judging because that would be putting the usual thoughts on top of the usual thoughts. But we watch, then we let the conditioned thought go, and go back to watching our breath etc. So we cut the stream of thought naturally and gently. That's tranquility meditation, the first step.

this is groundbreaking, but the sad part is that the new world is so ignorant to believe these kinds of things. most of what hes talking about are rather basic buddhist concepts and stuff found in many books and aren't "secrets". its the believing that is the battle. people have what i call a "wall of belief", biased credibility. i feel like people only believe Ricard because of his education, yet monks, meditation, buddhism etc and the latter life he chose to live have existed for generations.

0:02 MEDITATION IS NOT 'AN ART'. 'MEDITATION' IS A LEVEL OF CONCENTRATION. ONE CAN SAY 'THE ART OF DEBATE'; OR 'THE ART OF WAR'. BUT NOT 'THE ART' OF MEDITATION. MEDIATION IS A STATE OF MIND THAT ONE MIGHT HOLD WHILE PRACTICING AN ART FORM. IT'S VERY EASY TO PUT 'THE ART OF' IN FRONT OF ANYTHING AT ALL; HOWEVER; IF I WERE TO SAY; 'THE ART OF' MEDIATION; THEN I COULD ALSO SAY 'THE ART OF' DISTRACTION; OR 'THE ART OF' DULLNESS; OR 'THE ART OF' SLEEP-WALKING OR 'THE ART OF' POOPING. ALL IS AN ART FORM WHEN ONE IS IN MEDITATIVE EQUIPOISE. SLEEPING; DREAMING; EATING AND SO ON.

Find True Peace In Jesus Christ What does it take to be Saved? Faith in Christ’s Finished Work on the Cross The Cost of Sin Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. HELL IS A REAL LOCATION Luke 12:4-5 And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. Matthew 25:51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Are we all Sinners in NEED of a Saviour? Romans 3:10-12 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Romans 3:23-26 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. What specifically to Believe in!! 1 Timothy 2:4-6 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: Christ died for our sins, he was buried, and he rose again according to the scriptures so you can be free from Hell and Death. This is the greatest gift God gave us. By having faith in the Gospel you are sealed with the Holy Spirit forever and SAVED from that moment to eternity. Galatians 1:11-12 11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. 12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. Heaven or Hell? It’s Your Choice A PRAYER FOR SALVATION THROUGH FAITH “I know that I am a sinner and need your forgiveness. I believe that Christ died for my sins and rose three days later from the grave. Thank you for forgiving my sin on the cross. You alone Jesus is now why I have forgiveness and eternal life. Thank you in Jesus name. Amen.” If you have prayed this with faith (Wholeheartedly) you are Forgiven and now in the Body of Christ. Welcome brother or sister. Remember saying a prayer does not save you, having Faith does in Jesus and what He did for you. What if I continue to Sin? What if I stop having Faith? What if 5 years after being saved I have an affair? What if I aborted my child 1 year after I was saved? What about suicide? When you first had faith in Christ you were sealed and secured from that day forward, no matter what you do or don’t do our saviour has saved your soul and made you a new creation. Remember it Gods Work that saved you not Yours. Eternal Security ( 100% Going to Heaven) Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. God Bless You

This monk stuff sounds so beautiful to hear, but in reality, you live in a world where most people are not really in an idealistic monk state of mind. Why would you want to change the world? I tried too hard to be a guy who is different, but no one gives a damn. Why? Because it is useless. Monks are useless people who meditate. They don't change humanity. Humanity changes humanity. To be human is to be in chaos. There is no freedom or slavery, it is all state of mind. Why do you think people are religious and slave to their stupid thoughts? Because you can't live without those stupid thoughts. A monk is a person who gives up all those stupid thoughts. He becomes a philosopher for himself. But what's the use? You die and your brain dies and nothing? Love and kindness? Ahhh...stupid words again. I'm not being pessimistic. But it is just a way that humans are afraid of being themselves. Peace is never a human thing, the absence of human is the only way to find peace but who is the one who achieves peace, nature always is in chaos. Randomness is the deal of nature. You are just as random and worthless as a rock. If you try finding purpose, it's like finding the one thing which never existed.
@silentrotation8 жыл бұрын
+alienkishorekumar . Chaos is not natural to the mind. The constant mental chatter of the stream of consciousness is the result of delusion about what the mind really is and what the world really is, and this chatter is conditioned by our mental habits. Result, simply seeing the chaos as the only reality when in fact there is much more to discover. And why should it matter what your family and friends think? They are going to try to tell you you are totally wasting your time if you think and act differently, because they only want to believe in the usual conditioned way of mindlessly doing life same old over and over again. Buddhists believe in karma and karma in the mind that continues after death. It's hopelessness when you believe that there is nothing after death and nothing to discover during life, and this comes about due to people thinking that science already knows everything and that the mind comes about only as a byproduct of the brain. But when you look into what quantum physicists are saying you would be surprised at how weird their theories are, how related to the observer their measurements are, how space/time and dimensions are relative concepts, and how they have no idea how mind comes about, no idea.
@mtcmatuco7 жыл бұрын
alienkishorekumar those things you just said are exactly what his is talking about, negative emotions.. you are the prove, from the beginning he said " the change starts individually " you answer you're own statements, society is the way it is for people like u that don't know nothing about processes, and aren't whiling to work on themselves, so full on negative feelings..
@yumesubi7 жыл бұрын
Alien Machine exactly. So if you take that view of the world, why be negative? Why not be happy for your own sake and the people around yous sake if nothing in this world really matters?
@Noox386 жыл бұрын
It's not about purpose it's about goal, a purpose is given, a goal is chosen. Plus, he is a monk but if you take the mysticism out of the speech the whole thing still stands. You say what monk do have no impact but in the end nothing does we will die the sun will turn into a supernova and the universe will basically freeze. If you want it to be your experience of life and your feeling is the whole point. And as I am on a phone I can't see your message while typing mine meaning I get lost in my arguments so I'm gonna leave it here but meditation is proven to have a physical impact on the brain, it may come from monks or from the mad man of the city if it works you can't just come in and dismiss the whole thing
