I've felt so lost and stagnant with my playing because I felt like I was not practicing the right things, or practicing properly. I go to in person lessons once a week, but even then I felt like I wasn't getting the right advice. This was so so helpful! I literally jumped up after you answered and sat down at my piano to work some things out. You've broken it down into such a manageable way, I have no doubt my practice sessions will be much more productive now, especially in terms of scales. I was basically just going up and down hands together, sometimes working on different volumes in each hand, or staggering the notes so they're in between each other to keep it interesting. The idea of not just working on scales, but working on techniques that give me trouble at the same time is fantastic! Thank you again, so much! Your content is always so thoughtful, and focused on helping those who want to play, whether they've been playing for a day, or 10 years. Whether they're 15, or 75, you make it easy to understand for everyone. I really like your videos you really encouraged me to start learning classical but I feel really lost on what songs to learn and what techniques are used in playing and which motor skills that i should practice

Matthew do you provide personal piano lessons over Skype or Zoom? I would be interested after I learn all my major scales and their diatonic chords which I am working on now. I want to learn how to improvise with long runs between chords using the entire landscape of keyboard. I see incredible performances by the pro's like yourself and can't figure out what their doing, what patterns or scales they use.

i think to me, music is also like a drawing because we play out from our imagination and just like we use to quit drawing when we cant write down our imagination, we somtimes cannot play what we are hearing in our minds. Every persons handwritings are different just like the way we play and our emotions are different.

I love theory and figuring out how things work. But I have problems visualizing how and actually applying them to my playing. For example, the circle of 5ths is really cool and a great visual, but beyond understanding how it is created and how it pertains to major and relative minor scales and numbers of sharps and flats, what do I do with it? How does it make me a better player other than just building theoretical understanding? Also, what is with the "modes?" To me it is just musical psychobabble. When I hear, or see in videos, talking about the dorian or phrygian mode music snobbery is what comes to mind. What's with the cryptic wording and how do I apply it to my playing?

I think the aspect of having a teacher was severely underplayed in a lot of answers. A beginner doesn't know what he doesn't know, that's the biggest problem. A good teacher will accelerate your early progress by helping you really focus on things that matter at the moment.

If you only focus on how to get to the first camp in Everest you will die. Don't do that.
