We met up with Mattie outside of Miles City Montana. Mattie and her husband have a ranch there where they raise horses and cattle. Mattie's connection to ranching and the horse world runs deep, here's what she had to say:
My love for music started at a young age, checking waters on the ranch with my dad in the feed truck singing every word to Tom Russell's Blue Wing. I started playing the guitar and writing my own songs fairly early on but I always lacked confidence. My mom took me to one of Houston Marchman's concerts in Dallas, TX and when I met him he said my mom had been bragging on my singing. Before ever hearing me sing a word he handed me his guitar and asked me to open the show for him. Between Houston and my friends at the Greenwood Saloon in Bluff Dale, TX I finally started gaining confidence and growing a love for sharing the music I write.
I am a 6th generation rancher, and I’m proud of it. My great grandfather was one of the founders of the AQHA, my husband and I continue to raise horses with the intent to raise the type of horse that any cowboy would be proud to swing a leg over. My husband and I bought a ranch in Arizona when he was 21 and I was 19, most everyone thought we weren’t going to make it, and we nearly didn’t a few times but the Heavenly Father has always provided for us. We know what it’s like to be dead broke surviving off of maverick bulls, doing our laundry in mineral tubs and living in a camper with no ac when it’s 120 outside but it’s all been to build character and appreciation for this lifestyle.
