As a landscape and outdoor photographer I have a group of settings I usually change right away as soon as I get a camera. Here's a quick rundown of the top changes I make.

*#10 Volume* You got this wrong, I'm afraid! The setting you changed alters the volume in playback mode. If you want to switch off the timer and AF beeps, then it's in Camera 2, page 9, under *Audio signals*. You're welcome! ;)

Thank you for sharing these excellent suggestions! As more A7Riii bodies are entering the used camera market, this video continues to provide value to the Sony community. And many of these items apply to other camera brands as well.

Good video but just wanted to mention a couple of things. First, from the research I have done and tests people have performed, after ISO 400 there is really no benefit of using uncompressed vs compressed. More importantly, I suggest that when recommending to shoot in Adobe RGB to remind viewers that if they are sharing the images on the internet they really want to export the images to sRGB because first of all, if your monitor is does not cover the AdobeRGB color space then the images may look a bit dull, plus unfortunately not all apps out there and browsers are good with color management so if you want to play it safe with compatibility then you want to go with sRGB. So if your goal is to shoot JPG with Adobe RGB but still plan to edit the photos and just wanted to capture more data, then sure that works as long as you export it to sRGB before sharing on the internet. I personally work with RAW in ProPhoto color space all the way to the last part of editing when I finally export it to which ever format I need depending if I am printing or posting on the internet etc. So in summary sure, a "bigger" color space sounds like a logical choice but is not. It depends on your ultimate goal and process to get to that final photo you will be sharing. Regards!

Some other great changes to make (for me personally but it might work for others too). I’ve set ‘C2’ to APS-C (super 35mm) - super handy for anyone shooting primes. I also back button focus so I’ve set ‘AF-ON’ as focus and ‘AEL’ as eye af.

Thanks, Matt always good to see how pros set up the A7R iii. I am still learning mine, can you either do a short Utube or give me a step by step for syncing A7R iii to an iPhone 8. I have searched the net for clear instructions and nothing found. Seems so simple but not intuitive...

So what is it with you guys that you call the TOOLBOX icon a suitcase? Mark Galer ( Sony Global Ambassador) for Australia did the same thing in his setup video. In context, you are in the settings or setup menu system so having a suitcase icon wouldn't make much sense, but a Toolbox kinda seems the right thing. Minor point I know, but found the interpretation by more than one expert was interesting.

I have just started my Lightroom journey and noticed your KZfaq video on the settings on the SonyA7Riii which I have recently upgraded to from the ii.
@artmaltman6 жыл бұрын
One more thing. There is a setting for shutter release that dictates how hard the camera should try to find focus prior to releasing the shutter. I find that anything other than the most strict setting - at least in the a7R2 - resulted in frequent missed focus. Default is the middle “balanced” setting but I change it to require focus.

Hi Matt, could you highlight a question for me on uncompressed raw please. I understand that when using the uncompressed raw setting there can be restrictions and grey out sections of the menu? what would these be? I think I saw a video regarding how it interferes with bracketing and frame rate? This could be a reason not to go with the R3 and with the 850 (I'm a landscaper too). Please can you identify the inconsistencies many thank for your time. John :)

Hi Matt, Thanks for the video, great as usual !! Regarding the quality of the raw you choose uncompressed vs lossless compressed because you don't to think about it (no brainer) or you actually did see differences in quality ? How about 12 or 14 bits ? The math is in the favor of 14 bits but I read so many times that there is no way to see any differences. What is your advice ? Thanks
@MattKloskowski6 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I've never really researched it. I just shoot at whatever the default "raw" setting is and change to uncompressed on the Sony. As you know... there's always a trade off between "the math" and the "rules" and real world. I'd say the only way to really find out is to test it in your normal shooting environment and compare the two on screen to see if you can tell the difference. Thanks!

Hi Hal. It’s a great camera so I’d use it. People took great wildlife photos with it years ago. Sure newer cameras will provide better keeper rates, but if that’s what you have then use it and enjoy it. Hope that helps.

Is this camera good for video?
@JamesHarris-6 жыл бұрын
I saw this video a little while ago and was going to point out a possible edit you might make, talking about screen brightness during minute 13, but then the video went missing. You must have made the edit and re-uploaded the video. You really do a nice job of encoding. This video is 720 on KZfaq but it looks more like a 1080p resolution. BTW--> Doesn't turning up your screen run your battery down quicker, or do you just carry enough spares not to worry about it? I agree with you on 'touch-focus', that is one of my favorite features on my Canon. And it works on stills as well as video.
@MattKloskowski6 жыл бұрын
Thanks James. Yep, I missed that spot at 13 minutes but re-uploaded the video :-) And yes, I'm sure it does run your battery down faster, but the A7R3 battery like is HUGELY improved over the previous so it's not much of an issue. I did 4 sunrise shoots with the camera and the battery was at 68% after the 4th hour-ish long shoot. That's a big improvement and it's nice to finally not have to worry about battery life again :-)
@JamesHarris-6 жыл бұрын
Hey man, you are way way too young to be having "senior moments"! :-) Would you believe I usually charge the battery on my 5DMark IV about once per month. But then I probably don't put the sort of use on it that you put on yours. While I'm thinking about it - Do you see RC much anymore? I miss you guys doing your thing.
@MattKloskowski6 жыл бұрын
Sadly I have these senior moments every day! I don't see RC anymore but I believe he's still in the area though.

Matt....on the a7r iii...I see how to shoot in silent mode but how do I silence the timer when shooting 2/5/10 second countdowns?
@shuilong525 жыл бұрын
Hi-I get the notion that with pixel shift function, you don't need to shoot it "bracketing". appreciate your advice. thanks
@andrewhillphotosvideos2909 Жыл бұрын
very good thanks but when it comes to the volume settings I would leave the up, why? because in video editing if you don't need audio then just delet it. if you do then you can set the audio level to what you want... in other words keep it on... maybe thats me but you have that control in edit... thanks tho great video well worth watching to the end..
@MattKloskowski Жыл бұрын
This video is really old, and I didn't re-watch it - but I believe the volume I was referring to was the volume settings of the beeps of the camera. If not, the only other reason I wouldn't leave volume set high for actual recording is that's like saying "Don't worry about your highlights... just fix them in post". If the highlights are gone, they're gone - there is no fixing in post. If your volume is peaked and blown out, it's gone - you can help it in post but it will never sound as good as correct volume levels.

I bought my Sony A7R3 back in 2017. Are these changes for that year or the 2020? Not sure how much the A7R3 has changed in 3 years.
@MattKloskowski3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark. The a7R iii is the same camera today as it was when it came out. Cameras really don't change much after they're released. Always check for the latest firmware updates. And when you do, if there is a firmware update, it'll list if there are any new things that were added. But it's not like Photoshop where if you're using a version from 4 yeas ago, the version today is very different. The camera that came out 4 years ago is generally the same camera today give or take a few minor changes in firmware updates. Good luck!

Hmm. It's either my 28mm or 35mm. They're both really small so it's hard to tell. I don't use either of them much. Just a prop on the camera, since my main lens is probably recording the video :-)

720P why?
@tonyjames54446 жыл бұрын
Was thinking of switching to this from DSLR but having handled and experienced the ergonomics of the camera I'm staying put. Yes the body is smaller etc but the lenses are generally just as thick and heavy as DSLR equivalents which negates the advantage. What did it for me though, (aware this has been debated many times:), was a recent report where an A7Rlll was subjected to an inclement weather test alongside Nikon & Canon equivalent cameras: www.diyphotography.net/weather-sealing-test-kills-sony-a7riii-not-nikon-canon-olympus/ The results werent great and the A7 stop working completely after one phase of the test. It would appear that Sony mistakenly believe that the way the A7's are made removes the need for pro level weather sealant capabilities when it's clearly not the case.
