Looks can be deceiving. My mare has beautiful coat and looks good. Her attitude was awful. I asked the vet to scope for ulcers because I just knew that was why. They said oh you don’t need to do that. She looks too good. Fast forward a month. Colic, fever, diarrhea. Hospital for a week. Finally scoped. Yes ulcers. Attitude is a big player. They don’t always have poor coat and look bad. Thanks for this video. I love you helping with caring for their health as well as training!!!!

And there's a youtube vid. shows what indicates having ulcers. Apply firm pressure where girth would be. Left side slightly under. Horse will flinch from pain.

I was very happy to see in your last video that you had a slow feeding hay net in your stall. Glad to see you use them. Horses are natural grazers and it's important for them to eat (almost) constantly. Slowing down their eating helps them do this, especially when we put them in man-made environments such as stalls and transport them to shows in trailers for long periods of time. When a horse goes for a long period of time without eating the build up of gastric juices can cause ulcers, so it's important to keep them eating. Bravo for using the slow-feeder hay nets!

I have ulcers now. I've had them before. The problem is I didn't get ahead of the game. Times are really stressful. Matt is a horse 🐎servant. I see him with his horses and they are so expressive with them. I can see why Fallon Tayloe enjoys horsetalk with Matt.

Horses' digestive tracks are complex - certainly not like a cow's, that goes through three or four rounds of digesting grass before it's finished - but they do have complex guts. And like us, their guts are connected to the nervous system and they will tell you when it hurts. They are communicative if you gained their trust and friendship. Matt's horses obviously love him because he loves them.

We have just bought a 3 year old filly from the Hunter Valley in New South Wales (I live in Queensland Australia) so she was on the transport overnight; I gave her a course of Ulcershield for 1 week. We also use Ulcershield on all our horses when they are being shown. He’s a stunning colt 😍

Good topic, important when training hard and showing. Always give ulcergard when changing environment, such as showing and a hind gut support. Teeth topic is a definite must, thank you for posting this. Anything new, the ulcerguard and some chill out paste of your choice. Supplement your horse, we take them out of their environment, they should out in a field grazing for most of their days/nights. Always suppliment your horses that are stalled.

Thank you for sharing! This is, I believe, such a swept-under-the-rug topic. Perhaps because people think if a horse has ulcers it may not have been well taken care of-and that is just not always the case. I live in Ontario Canada and for the last few years have been focused on off track thoroughbreds. In the beginning I didn't automatically treat for ulcers. Most had shiny coats, were fit and looked great. Now, as soon as they arrive they are seen by the vet and started on Omeprazole. The quick change, behaviourally and how they handled the transition in every horse was dramatic. Safe to say that despite best care and feed, some horses under stress just seem to be more at risk of developing ulcers. Here in Ontario Canada, Omeprazole must be prescribed by a veterinarian and is not available over the counter. Last box I purchased was $300 for 35 days, not sure how that compares to what is available to you guys. Anyway great videos, I have only admiration and respect for reining. It simply is a wonderful example of what horses can and will do for us, and at the same time make it look so extraordinarily beautiful. Keep up the amazing work!

Hi again MATT Not a vet but good sound advice. My experience is that many either don't know they can get ulcers or don't know their horse good enough to recognize the possibility of such a thing. Pro active and regular help can make such a difference as you mentioned. It can be a really tough go if they have a really severe case. So good general care is alot cheaper then huge vet bills. That's another thing about you after following you for quite a while now is that you offer good commonsense and practical topics that anyone can use. And you have such an understandable way of explaining/teaching the topics. Thx as always for sharing. For me it's great fun I can still get useful tidbits of info. Never too old to learn makes me smile lol! Thx again...

This is good practical advice regardless of what sector of the horse business are in in my case harness racing my poor little girl she was a VP Finance Filly. Every time we would race she was so nervous and so scared I wish I had this product prior! The best she could do is get a third place check unlike her father who made at 6 years old 749,000 but he was an Abercrombie! Just giving you a heads up I just got the booth information confirmation of our Marriott in South Henderson because I need a kitchen to make all the bath and body products. We will be there on the arena floor show! And this time I'll have a better Booth it'll be better prepared I'm sure I'll be the number one babysitter for the kids because of Motor City Slime but I will have more Bath & Body as well as horse related signs and earrings that I am using my new laser to create so I will see you at South Pointe! I'm going to have to create swag bags for all the competitors it will be great!

Thanks for this Tip of the Week. We recently lost my daughter's barrel mare to unknown causes. We were aggressively treating her for ulcers but her outside appearance would tell otherwise because her coat was shiny and she looked the best she had ever looked. I currently supplement with O3 Equine Omega and my horses are doing fantastic. Thanks to your video earlier this spring when you received a package from O3 Animal that spurred me to order for my horses. Ok..so my question is what else do you supplement with? You mentioned SmartPak in this video. Is there a specific one or is it based more on the individual horse. Thanks for all your knowledge and wisdom and also your collab with Fallon was FANTASTIC!!

If got a friend who acquired what they thought was an appendix (if that's correct) and apparently the vets said thourobred, and he wont gain weight regardless what she feeds which is a ton! The vets say hes fine but every now and again he bolts on her and was trucked a very long ways to us in vermont. Do you think we should get a second opinion on possible ulcers? They didnt scope him or anything
