After being invited to the BMW event at the end last year by Shell, they asked me if I would be interested in taking a trip out to Houston to learn about how a fuel like Shell V Power Nitro+ can help minimize gunk on internals like valves & also help lubricate the combustion chamber to minimize wear from rings.
I was excited for this tour because I've always used Shell gas since my early Honda days & really wanted to ask an engineer the questions I know some of you and myself would have. Now what I really want to do is a tour of a refinery and pick their brains even more on this stuff - I want to ask the super nerdy questions most of us have.

Call me skeptical, but I never trust those enclosed boxes that allow you to turn a lever or wheel in order to feel the frictional difference. There could be anything inside the box causing you to feel the slightest resistenace. But, with that said, I still drive until I find a shell station. Good video VERY informative. Thanks Matt

Thanks Matt for the tour ! One thing not mentioned about dirty valves, dirty valves are not necessarily from just fuel, unfortunately in modern engines today the PCV (positive crank ventilation) system are routed directly into the intake systems due to emissions, so overtime the whole intake track gets loaded with oil due to blow by, so turbo chargers, intercoolers , intake manifolds etc get caked with oil that gets directed and caked onto the intake valves , and oil lowers octane and that’s no Bueno! ,this can especially happen on boosted cars , so the remedy for this is installing oil catch cans :) , I have been using Shell V power plus nitro for awhile and I hope what they claim is true about cleaning the valves , lubrication , and anti corrosion at least there trying to prove how and why there fuel is better :)

I've been a petroleum technician for the last 10 years. I would say Shell and BP have some of the cleanest fuels. Obviously some of that depends on the site and their maintenance (especially if they have steel tanks instead of newer fiberglass), but for some reason Exxon premium always causes everything it comes in contact with to rust the piping under the dispenser gets the worst of it... I always try to put Shell or BP fuel in my C7 when it's convenient

Well I used to run only Shell 91 here in Canada in my subaru forester 2.5T when i had it. I worked on it alot like most subaru owners. Taking off the intake manifold several times being able to see the intake valve it was super polished no gunk/carbon even in the turbo it was super clean. I still run it in my new '17 Sierra and nothing bad to say about it. I also run it in my bike and my 87 Turbo Rx7. Great video lots of information

@@greatestever2565 don't let people's bs opinions discourage you he doesnt seem to understand fuel dynamics himself l. 93 octane doesnt burn faster causing worse mpg. It simply allows the engine to inject more fuel and advance the timing more resulting in the POTENTIAL to make more power and because of the extra fuel you are able to inject because it will not detonate as easily, worse mpg

With my years of experience with multiple performance vehicles. BP and Shell perform much greater than any other fuels I have used. Mobil is just under because of the detergence they add to the fuel. This is my experience not fact. Knock = Resistance to detonation. Lower octane on a high compression engine will cause it to detonate prior to the spark plug firing it off. The Spark plug fires off part of the fuel and the two explosions hitting each other is knock. The fact that higher octane resist knock you can increase your timing which gives you better performance. E85 has a high resistance to cause knock. It's usually about 101 octane.

I think she didn’t fully understand your question when you asked if higher “octane” fuel was more combustible. The short answer is no. They are equally combustible. But if you add a higher calorific additive or blend then you get more power out. Octane, either RON, MON or the American combined one is not a measure of combustibility but a measure of resistance to auto ignition. When you compress the air fuel mix the heat and compression can cause the fuel to auto ignite. This is knock. A higher octane number means it is more resistant to this happening. So it means you can advance the ignition timing more without it auto igniting the whole charge. The normal flame front remains. The knock you hear is actually the pressure wave hitting the piston while it is still travelling up. If you can slow down that pressure wave (which is just ahead of the flame front) with a higher octane fuel then you can create more pressure with the earlier burn (as it completes while the piston is closer to the top).

The valves aren't subject to any fuel flow in a direct injection engine so how do the additives keep the valve stems and heads clean in an engine like this. The raptor engine has port injection also so that would keep the valves clean.

Back in the day I would only fill up my GTI using Chevron as I thought no other fuel would be good enough. Years later with my SQ5 I fill up with Costco gas. What learned is lots of this stuff (V Power, Techron) doesn’t matter too much. The reality is gas all comes from the same refineries. The difference in fuels is the amount and type of fuel additives being added to the fuel. On new cars these additives don’t matter as much as most new cars are direct inject. As a result none of these additives even touch the valves and carbon build up is inevitable. The reality is any Top Tier fuel meets the additive requirements needed for cars. Filling up with Costco, Shell, Chevron, 76, etc. will all yield the same long term and immediate results.

Hi Matt Excellent video and very informative. One idea could be to start a series about topics related to the oils and lubricants in engines, transmissions, differentials, etc., synthetic oils, anti freeze and coolants, refrigerants, basically what are the best fluids and lubricants to be used and what needs to be considered when topping up or changing any of the items. Also are additives good or bad and what to consider. In short allow people to be better informed to know what is best and what is not. I know Owners manuals provide the manufacturers recommendations however people are bombarded with sales pitches that contradict the manuals including your dealer and arming people with good data would be excellent.

Both Shell and Chevron use nitrogen for better cleaning and better lubrication. All Shell grades are Top Tier certified, have nitrogen, and will offer some of the same benefits as the premium fuel; however, most modern vehicles with higher compression, direct injection, and turbocharging can certainly benefit from higher octane -- consult your owner's manual for recommendations.

I have used V-Power exclusively in my cars for about 7 years now. I’m glad to find out I’m not the only person who has come to this conclusion. There’s one thing that wasn’t covered that highly influenced my decision. All major fuel companies have proprietary additive packages that are well tested and proven, but they are not tested in heterogeneous mixtures with other fuels. Much less at different ratios of mixture. What may work great when unmixed may become less effective or even counterproductive when mixed with other additive packages. Nobody really does that research to even know. So I’d recommend you pick a major supplier and use their premium fuel exclusively. I would however advise that your first criteria in selection be availability in your area. If Shell is available the. You really can’t go wrong with it. If not just pick a quality brand and stay loyal.

I would have liked to hear confirmation whether the major refiners actually deliver the same product to the hyper-vendors like Costco or Safeway that tthey do to their own branded stations.. I represent an independent fuel jobber in CA and have heard that this is the case; meaning why go to Shell if they sell the same formula to others which charge cheaper prices for the same product. Living in CA obviously this is a big deal because of the ridiculously high price of fuel here caused by incessant environmental regulations and taxes.

Also for some strange reason, when idling over 10 minutes, shell gas puts my car in limp mode. Dealer can’t figure out why. After 2 full tank fill ups a week for 2 years with Shell half of those and Irving the other half, I can tell a huge difference in driving. Only downfall with Irving is that it burns quicker. Maybe they have more Ethenol in it. Maybe that explains why it has more power. I never did understand why Shell always has the best ratings. In two years of testing, I have a different observation.

I will say, I started using Shell 93 on my 350z, and I felt a difference in how the car responded. It was not crazy but I did feel less hesitation and it almost seemed to help the engine run smoother vs the normal 93 I get at lets say Wawa or Racetrack. : /

Shell's advertising regarding its renewable energy business has been described as a greenwash by some environmental lobbies,[152] leading to criticism from the British Advertising Standards Authority which ruled that Shell had misled the public in an advertisement when it claimed that a $10 billion oil sands project in Alberta, Canada was a "sustainable energy source".[153] Health and safety A number of incidents over the years led to criticism of Shell's health and safety record, including repeated warnings by the UK Health and Safety Executive about the poor state of the company's North Sea platforms.[154] Human rights In the beginning of 1996, several human rights groups brought cases to hold Shell accountable for alleged human rights violations in Nigeria, including summary execution, crimes against humanity, torture, inhumane treatment and arbitrary arrest and detention. In particular, Shell stood accused of collaborating in the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other leaders of the Ogoni tribe of southern Nigeria, who were hanged in 1995 by Nigeria's then military rulers.[155] The lawsuits were brought against Royal Dutch Shell and Brian Anderson, the head of its Nigerian operation.[156] In 2009, Shell agreed to pay $15.5m in a legal settlement.[155] Shell has not accepted any liability over the allegations against it.[157] In 2009, Shell was the subject of an Amnesty International report into the deterioration of human rights as a consequence of Shell's activities in the Niger Delta. In particular, Amnesty criticised the continuation of gas flaring and Shell's slow response to oil spills.[158] In 1998, on its first public report on community and environmental issues in Nigeria, Shell promised "to end the practice of gas flaring in ten years, while pledging to establish a youth training scheme in Ogoniland".[159] In 2010, a leaked cable revealed that Shell claims to have inserted staff into all the main ministries of the Nigerian government and know "everything that was being done in those ministries", according to Shell's top executive in Nigeria. The same executive also boasted that the Nigerian government had forgotten about the extent of Shell's infiltration.[77] Documents released in 2009 (but not used in the court case) reveal that Shell regularly made payments to the Nigerian military in order to prevent protests.[160] Arctic project According to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management report in 2015 the chances of a major spill in a deep-sea Arctic drilling is 75% before century's end.[161] Kodiak In 2010 Greenpeace activists painted "No Arctic Drilling" with spilled BP oil on the side of a ship in the Gulf of Mexico that was en route to explore for Arctic oil for Shell. At the protest, Phil Radford of Greenpeace called for "President Obama [to] ban all offshore oil drilling and call for an end to the use of oil in our cars by 2030."[143] On 16 March 2012, 52 Greenpeace activists from five different countries boarded Fennica and Nordica, multipurpose icebreakers chartered to support Shell's drilling rigs near Alaska.[162] Around the same time period, a reporter for Fortune magazine spoke with Edward Itta, an Inupiat leader and the former mayor of the North Slope Borough, who expressed that he was conflicted about Shell's plans in the Arctic, as he was very concerned that an oil spill could destroy the Inupiat peoples hunting-and-fishing culture, but his borough also received major tax revenue from oil and gas production; additionally, further revenue from energy activity was considered crucial to the future of the living standard in Itta's community.[139] In July 2012, Greenpeace activists shut down 53 Shell petrol stations in Edinburgh and London in a protest against the company's plans to drill for oil in the Arctic. Greenpeace's "Save the Arctic" campaign aims to prevent oil drilling and industrial fishing in the Arctic by declaring the uninhabited area around the North Pole a global sanctuary.[163] A review was announced after the Kulluk oil rig ran aground near Kodiak Island in December 2012.[164] In response, Shell filed lawsuits to seek injunctions from possible protests, and Benjamin Jealous of the NAACP and Radford argued that the legal action was "trampling Americans' rights."[165] According to Greenpeace, Shell lodged a request with Google to take down video footage of a Greenpeace protest action that occurred at the Shell-sponsored Formula One (F1) Belgian Grand Prix on 25 August 2013, in which "SaveTheArctic.org" banners appear at the winners' podium ceremony. In the video, the banners rise up automatically-activists controlled their appearance with the use of four radio car antennas-revealing the website URL, alongside an image that consists of half of a polar bear's head and half of the Shell logo.[166] Royal Dutch Shell then announced a "pause" in the timeline of the project in early 2013[144] and, in September 2015, the corporation announced the extension of the suspension of its drilling program in the Arctic.[167] Polar Pioneer A June 2014 interview with the corporation's new executive vice president of the Arctic indicated that Royal Dutch Shell will continue with its activity in the region.[64][145] In Seattle protests began in May 2015 in response to the news that the Port of Seattle made an agreement with Shell to berth rigs at the Port's Terminal 5 during the off-season of oil exploration in Alaskan waters. The arrival of Shell's new Arctic drilling vessel, Polar Pioneer (IMO number: 8754140), a semi-submersible offshore drilling rig, was greeted by large numbers of environmental protesters paddling kayaks in Elliott Bay.[168][169] On 6 May 2015 it was reported that during a coast guard inspection of Polar Pioneer, a piece of anti-pollution gear failed, resulting in fines and delay of the operation.[170] Oil executives from Total and Eni interviewed by the New York Times, expressed scepticism about Shell's new ambitions for offshore drilling in the Arctic, and cited economic and environmental hurdles. ConocoPhillips and Statoil suspended Arctic drilling earlier, after Shell's failed attempt in 2012.[171] Oil spills Shell was responsible for around 21,000 gallons of oil spilled near Tracy, California, in May 2016 due to a pipeline crack.[172] Shell was responsible for an 88,200-gallon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in May 2016.[173] Two ruptures in a Shell Oil Co. pipeline in Altamont, California - one in September 2015 and another in May 2016 - had some questioning whether the Office of the State Fire Marshal, charged with overseeing the pipeline, was doing an adequate job.[174] Paradise Papers On 5 November 2017, the Paradise Papers, a set of confidential electronic documents relating to offshore investment, revealed that Argentine Energy Minister Juan José Aranguren was revealed to have managed the offshore companies 'Shell Western Supply and Trading Limited' and 'Sol Antilles y Guianas Limited', both subsidiaries of Shell. One is the main bidder for the purchase of diesel oil by the government through the state owned CAMMESA (Compañía Administradora del Mercado Mayorista Eléctrico).[175] Nigeria corruption scandals Royal Dutch Shell and Italy's Eni will stand trial in Italy over allegations of corruption in the 2011 purchase of a big offshore oil field in Nigeria known as OPL 245. Shell and Eni reportedly paid $1.3 billion in bribes.[176] According to Barnaby Pace of campaign group Global Witness, "This trial should be a wake-up call to the oil industry. Some of the most senior executives at two of the biggest companies in the world could face prison sentences for a deal that was struck under their watch."[176] In March 2018, Royal Dutch Shell has filed a criminal complaint against Peter Robinson, a former vice president for sub-Saharan Africa. Shell said the two cases were unrelated.[177] Oman 1954 War In 1937, Iraq Petroleum Company (IPC), 23.75 percent owned by Royal Dutch Shell,[178] signed an oil concession agreement with the Sultan of Muscat. In 1952, IPC offered financial support to raise an armed force that would assist the Sultan in occupying the interior region of Oman, an area that geologists believed to be rich in oil. This led to the 1954 outbreak of Jebel Akhdar War in Oman that lasted for more than 5 years.[179] Climate case On 5 April 2019, Friends of the Earth Netherlands (Milieudefensie) together with six NGOs and more than 17,000 citizens, sued Shell, accusing the company of harming the climate, while knowing about global warming since 1986.[180][181]

Well you never want fuel to get past the compression ring to " lubricate the cylinder to ring friction" because if the fuel gets in the ring land or the grove where the rings sits you could get combustion behind the rings which could cause catastrophic damage. So the fuel unless it is leaded fuel which is not in use anymore has little to no lubrication effect if fuel gets on the cylinder walls it will wash away oil loosing lubrication
@dakotafox617
@dakotafox617 4 жыл бұрын
The top ring is the compression ring as she said but the middle ring or the oil scraper ring kind of acts like a squedgy in a way I will leave behind a very little amount of oil on the cylinder walls to help lubricate the compression ring
@dakotafox617
@dakotafox617 4 жыл бұрын
A way to prove this is what is called the compression ring witness mark which is usually at the top 1 in. of the bore where only the compression ring touches you will actually get more wear there than anywhere else in the bore meaning the rest of the bore has some lubrication from oil being left behind
@dakotafox617

If unleaded fuel like shell nittro+ had any lubrication you would not have a witness mark in the top of the bore where combustion is happening
