Piastri looking like genius right now for telling alpine to shove it and signing with mclaren.

I don't think he had a choice. Alpine never gave him a seat for a long time, and by the time they did, only because Alonso ditched them, he had already signed with McLaren. That said, after a bad start of the season, I'm happy for him that things are starting to look up.

The reason Max stayed out for an extra lap was because they were to affraid they got delayed in the pit to much because their pitbox is right at the beginning of the pitlane and (almost) all cars coming in and not wanting to do an unsafe release.. Ironically the FIA seemed to be blind to unsafe releases today, as there were a few very obvious ones..

Exactly and Piastri on other hand their garage is one of the last ones on the grid. And he had Ferrari, RB Alpine and Mercedes right behind but their garage was also before McLaren’s so Piastri didn’t have to let any car pass to rejoin and therefore he had clean pit stop. Why do people proclaim to know what was in the mind of the stewards? For the stewards it's a slam dunk penalty when a car understeers into another, unless it's lap 1, while trying to overtake. Hamilton chose to overtake there. Hamilton understeered into Perez. Why does Perez need to leave more than a car's width? There's NOTHING in the rules that says he needs to do that. If you want 'racing' then cars shouldn't just wave another through.

Spot on @Ruylopez778 Why is everyone debating whether this was a penalty? Hamilton went for a move but didn't have the skill to pull it off. He drove himself onto the wet curbs even though there was ample room *not* to do that. That's an unquestionable penalty every single time, independant of what the end result is.
@Ruylopez778

@@Croga Yeah, every time we have this situation, people accuse the stewards of making decisions based on consequences or favourites. @shaunlevin5081
@shaunlevin5081 Жыл бұрын
I disagree about the penalty. I wasn't really sure if it was a penalty on the broadcast, but from watching the onboards and Sam Collin's analysis makes it clear it's a penalty. Perez gave space and Lewis understeered into him. Unfortunate for Perez, although he had no pace in general. Lewis really should've just waited for the bus stop. The broadcast didn't really do it service. Perez isn't entitled to give space. He gave multiple cars widths and Lewis kept his foot in to understeer. Luckily it's just a sprint so it doesn't really matter and Lewis is getting P3 in the WDC anyway.

Come on, Even world champions fade off their peak performance levels with time. And Perez has been nowhere near to even being a world champion. So I dont think I sound bad when I call him an average F1 driver. He’s had 2 seasons in Red bull, this is his 3rd, yet he has been nowhere near good enough to at-least compete for 2nd place. Let alone compete for the championship. And the only reason he has been sitting in 2nd place this season is because of the incredible car Red bull have given him. Give the same car to someone else - maybe Leclerc, Hamilton, Alonso, etc. (someone above average) im sure it wouldve been a different story. Where Redbull wouldve had to manage their drivers differences and fighting for pole and 1st places. much like Mercedes had to manage Hamilton and Nico Rosberg in 2014-2016

A few thing about the HAM vs PER situation. Firstly, the whole bit about consequences not being taking into account should be look at in context. If there are no consequences at all, it will not even be referred to the stewards. If there are consequences, it will. So in this regard, consequences do play a role. Secondly, during the race, I thought the penalty was harsh. Watching it again from the onboard, I changed my mind. Hamilton didn't steer into Checo or anything like that. But he took way more curb than he needed to and as a consequence, he washed into Checo. As Checo sidepod being messed up, if you listen to the sound during the incident, you hear that Lewis' wheel actually grinds at the sidepod for quite a while. It's not a tap. It in fact really surprised me that Lewis didn't pick up a puncture...

I usually agree with you guys but felt you were inconsisent this time. I know the delay was not welcome but given the conditions today, and given how the FIA turned the 2021 race into a dud (it was the main race, not even a sprint which would have been more bearable), I'd say this was pretty much the best they could do. I know you guys overlooked "logistics" but on an already packed sprint weekend, I think the 4 hour rule shouldn't be overlooked so easily. Even in the FP vs sprint discussion, FP3 rarely has representative running, so if we compare a 45 min normal saturday quali to the 30 min quali + 30 min race on sprint weekends, I'd say the latter offers more "racing" view time for the audience. It was a pity we couldn't get the full 15 laps, but again, I don't really see how it could have been any better.

I’m sorry but how was Perez supposed to give more room to Hamilton? He’s ahead all the way through, basically near the white line/ curb. He doesn’t want to chance putting a wheel out there because of the wet conditions. Per has given Ham ample room to use on the inside the corner. Ham doesn’t have a snap of oversteer yes, but he washes out towards the edge of the tract, ie he’s got understeer because he’s gone in a little to fast where his line through the corner and Perez’s link and because they’re next to each other the make contact. Perez has done nothing wrong and yet received effective ‘terminal damage’. And it doesn’t matter how the rule or the officiating is written - the consequence of an incident is always taken into account. Take Spa last year, no pen for Hamilton with Alonso, why because Ham retired due to the damage he caused and Alo was able to continue relatively unscathed. Bet you there would have been a pen for Ham if they both retired or only Alonso retired. Furthermore I do think this incident has many similarities to one’s we have seen in Austria turn 4. Cars more along side each other in this instance but it’s still the inside car taking the corner at a speed where they’re always going to wash out to the outside curb where the car that has taken the outside line has to be because that is the edge of the track. In effect basic corner physics.

Yeah no I couldn’t disagree more. Perez has been pushing the barriers lately with how much he squeezes drivers when making moves. This kind of drivers is going to cause collisions when the other driver pushes you back. Hamilton will do that and Hamilton was alongside and had the right to space. Perez turns in too early and Hamilton drifts a bit too far wide. Both at fault and is therefore a racing incident. Perez’s retirement should not be a factor in the retirement. That always used to be the case. I’m not sure why that has seemingly changed in recent years.

The incident may have similarities to Austria T4, but most if not all of those incidents resulted in the outside car getting punted off the track into the gravel. Perez was still able to carry on and even stayed ahead of Hamilton. Perez retiring should not affect the stewards decision for a penalty because, as Matt said, he was still ahead 10-15 seconds later. It is simply a racing incident with neither driver to blame it's as simple as that really.

Piastri was lucky that McLaren’s garage is one of the last ones on the grid, and when he made his pit cars behind had to stop behind him as well. RB’s garage is first on the right when you come to the pit, if Max made that pit in that first lap he would have McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes, Alpine immediately behind him and he would have to wait for them to pass or get a 5 seconds unsafe release penalty. My situation is similar to F1 in that I've got to make my decision with at least an hours notice as to whether the job goes ahead, if the expected bad weather doesn't turn up you get blamed for being too cautious and inconveniencing people, if you gamble on the weather being ok and it shits it down you put yourself, your tools and other peoples time/money at risk trying to fudge your way through it. Sometimes you look at the big black smudge heading towards you on the map and think, yep, definitely gonna rain in about an hour so I'll cancel and then the hour rolls around and it's clear skies for the rest of the day because the big rain cloud either emptied itself or decided it'd be more fun to swing north for no apparent reason, sometimes you look at the radar and there's a few little clouds hanging around but they're going to miss by a good 50 miles and then suddenly you're running for cover because one of those clouds took exception to your assumptions and dropped a thunderstorm right on top of you. It's easy to look back and say "well of course I should have done X or Y" after it's happened but when you've got expectation and responsibility on your shoulders you make some poor calls at times

The reason for the Hamilton penalty is that he can feel the front of his tires are about to give way and he does not lift. Instead, he continues to apply accelerator knowing, if the front of his car gives way, the side of Perez's car is there to save him. Hamilton literally aimed his car at the side of Perez's car and got the impact he knew was coming. The huge hole in the side of Perez car is really astonishing to see. After watching the onboards, my assessment is that it's a fair penalty for Hamilton. Of course both drivers have a responsibility during an overtake to keep it safe and clean, but the main burden is on the driver who is overtaking - Lewis, in this case. He's entitled to space, but that doesn't mean the racing line, or even a fast line. That's why you see so few overtakes on the outside, they get starved and have a bad run into the next straight. Drivers know and thus rarely even attempt it. Checo did his part. He left him the required space and kept to his line. Lewis had to drive over the curb to make the overtake stick (which is perfectly legal by Checo - it's not "off track", regardless of whether the weather makes it feasible or not), so Hamilton can either pull back and try again, or take the curb, and accept the risk of an "incident" in these conditions. Lewis knew what a wet curb does to his car. He chose to go over it. He was just impatient and caused a preventable collision.

Lewis has a habit of understeering into other drivers "by accident". In these tricky conditions it is on the overtaking car (coming from behind) to make sure he judges the situation correctly, which he didn't.

I feel like the Hamilton incident is the rules being applied as they are written, which can be harsh, but as we've seen with track limits recently things get much more confusing if you're inconsistent. Sergio was ahead into the corner, and thus had the right to the space he took, so long as he didn't force Lewis off the track which he didn't. That means that Hamilton has the duty of care to ensure that there isn't a collision, as he is the trailing driver, which he failed to do, thus it is a penalty by the rules. In terms of a "spirit of the law versus letter of the law argument", I think a case could be made for Perez as well, all weekend we've seen how deadly the white lines can be in the wet, many drivers have gone off, Perez was much closer to the lines, and could have easily been forced to go into a position where he could have lost control of the vehicle while still being "on the track" if he had taken that turn wider, Hamilton had more tarmac to work with, but chose not to, instead prioritizing the attempt to make an overtake which was never on, leading to the collision.

Except that isn't what the rules actually say. There is a convention that the driver in the lead at the apex (NOT into the corner) owns the corner, but this is a convention, not a rule. The code of conduct for drivers says that, if the overtaking driver has a significant proportion of their car alongside the other car going into the corner (as was clearly the case here) and can complete the manoeuvre safely whilst staying within the limits of the track, the driver being overtaken must give them sufficient space to avoid forcing the overtaking car off the track or causing a collision. So no, it wasn't just up to Hamilton to ensure that there wasn't a collision. I agree with Martin Brundle and many others that this was a racing incident.
@drewd2

I disagree with you 100%. Hamilton absolutely deserved the penalty. It's his job to have control of his car, he was the one coming from behind, and you can't put all the risk on the guy who isn't in as much control. Hamilton took extra risk by putting more power into it causing him to drift up and hit Perez hard, shown by a huge hole in Perez's car. Now, you can say that taking Perez out shouldn't be considered, but the whole absolutely should be considered to see how hard the hit actually was. That 5 second penalty is about the only good thing the FIA did all weekend.

It was Hamiltons responsibility to not hit Perez. Plain and simple. Perez left more than enough room, but Hamilton wanted more and chose to hit Perez. That's not a "Racing incident". If Hamilton had tried to turn tighter and got oversteer or understeer, then it is a racing incident because Hamilton would have been attempting to avoid the collision. However, that didn't happen. Hamilton drove into Perez. It's a bit of a habit for Hamilton and I think everyone is getting tired of it, even the Stewards.

I have to question Pirelli on the point of their Wet Weather tyre. Everyone wants Inter's, and if it is wet enough that they need the Full Wet, then they don't drive (either in practice they sit in the pits or during a race it is red flagged or they sit behind the safety car). Should Pirelli make the current Inter the Full Wet, and then have something like the Supersoft but with grooves for an inter? Something that will go off really quickly if it gets dry, but can still get some heat into it?
@TGfoever

The wet tire is a pointless compound due to spray. At any level of standing water where the wet would be required, the spray will be too much and they will either delay or run behind the safety car until the point the point of dryness where the inters are preferable.

Not difficult, Lewis lost control of a car he was supposed to be in control of. All he needed to do was slow it down and pass him like he was always going to a few corners down the road, instead he turned into Lewis of '2021 against Max and just put his foot in it because he's stubborn.
