Hi, I just wanted to thank you for the tutorial on installing kivy on the rpi, and also for the app code. Both have been essential for a project I am doing. Congrats for being awesome

Hi Matt, thanks for the demo, it's very interesting, I am planning to build a real pinball machine not a virtual one, and I was wondering if I could use Kivy to make the animations that will appear in the screen of an Android phone. and at the same time driving all the hardware with the GPIO interface, do you think that is possible?

Matt, Do you have a similar video or sample using C instead of phyton?

Is it possible to control the buttons (LED and BEEP! in your example) and the slider from something other than the screen the Pi is connected to? For example, an Android phone/tablet or webpage? That way you could control the Pi away from home. Thanks!

Glad to see you back! I need to get my rear in gear now. :) I'm definitely liking this display. I'm working out an idea for a Korg Wavedrum-like device that will center around the Pi, the Cirrus hat, and some piezo contact mics and possibly other sensors, using Pure Data for the DSP. I can definitely see this display being a nice way to manipulate pre-built PD patches. I just joined up on the Element14 site to try to get an idea of what I'm up against in terms of getting the Cirrus board working with a real-time kernel. I want to use the new RPi 2 B, mainly due to its available processing power and memory, all useful things for music DSP.

+Darren Landrum Great to hear from you again! Love the idea to use the screen for manipulating PD patches!

Does anyone else see the home automation possibilities with this? Even the main server could just be a pi. That touch screen would make an awesome wall mounted control panel.
@zetechguy8 жыл бұрын
+BurezFolf yup I thought of that.it would be really cool to see
@MattRichardson8 жыл бұрын
+BurezFolf Yes, I can totally see people mounting this display in their walls to do all kinds of home control.
@PeterScargill8 жыл бұрын
+BurezFolf I can of course see the possibilities - but value for money wise it is just all out of proportion - by the time you get the PI and the screen etc, you could have just bought a cheap tablet and programmed the lot into there - and not had to make a case either. This happens so often and people get so enthusiastic - they lose the plot... The Pi itself seems great - £25 they claimed originally - by the time you buy it - and a power supply, and a case, and FLASH and a WIFI dongle - and a screen - what are we looking at?? £100+ You can get a very nice little tablet and program it up for less than that and it is fully battery-backed-up and probably has way more memory. Personally I'd be more interested in a screen at maybe £20 - they are around.

+Peter Scargill Just for the record, Kivy - the GUI framework used in the demo - will run on RaspberryPi and Android/iOS (and Windows, OSX, and Linux).
@MrCameronMoore8 жыл бұрын
+Peter Scargill You're right about the tablet, but and there's always a but, if I want all the IO that the Pi has then a tablet won't help. This screen is really just another option. Hmmm, could use the tablet for remote access to the Pi.

hi , does kivy run without the raspbien gui (desktop)?
@tah34606 жыл бұрын
Kivy runs on pretty much anything. It's an independent library, not related to Raspberry at all. But is a cross-platform (code once, deploy to anything) that also deploys to Raspberry.

Hi. Great video - thanks! Am following through the instructions on your web page - kivy installed, touch works, kivy examples all work, all seems good. Display is great! However to run your touch.py I need "sudo python main.py" to get to the GPIO, but when I do that I get > ....I have the problem with "sudo python anyfile,py" (even not trying GPIO) in that kivy is not importable when running python under sudo :( Any idea on the cause/how to fix?
@calceos64988 жыл бұрын
+Martin Millener ....I have the problem with "sudo python anyfile.py" .. to be more correct!
@calceos64988 жыл бұрын
Got it! Problem was "pi" user PYTHONPATH environment variable was not available to sudo. I'm a *nix beginner, but this sorted it for me: "sudo PYTHONPATH=$PYTHONPATH python touch.py" Onwards and upwards...look forward to more pi/touchscreen/kivy videos!

Here's a thought.. Buy the very latest Raspberry pi 3B+ because.. well newer and more powerful is better, yes ? ... and you discover that Windows doesn't support IOT Hub on that hardware. Then you install the latest version of Raspian .. because that's better, yes ? Then you discover that Kivy doesn't work properly either. Look up 'Segmentation fault in Raspberry 3B+'. So far a day spent trying to get Kivy running on my new rpi 3B+ and just keep running into problems. As much as a great resource this is .. don't expect it to be without problems.
