Great interview. But as well as the game is doing now, (tv ratings) it's dying a slow death at the junior level. In the 21 yrs since I stopped playing, there aren't enough juniors to support the local area competitions. Sutherland shire, St. george Shire, and all the other competitions have amalgamated due to the lack of juniors.... My nephews are now playing against teams from Penrith to the Northern beaches to support a competition. Once you lose the foundation (juniors are your foundation), it's only another generation, and it starts to go down the path rugby finds itself in

I'd say to Matty, no-one loves anything as much as a younger brother his older sibling. The older sibling at some point gets tired of all expectations, keeping up appearances and perfection placed in his shoulders (either by family or society) then they just want out of the bubble. At that point the care factor just disappears, plus the stressors of life and generally first born kids are given a bit more to handle. As a rule, I'd say first born can be self centred, second borns are victims and third born are spoilt. Those traits can cause them to repel each other. Interesting too, that Matty sees the game very differently than Gus who regularly criticises high scoring games. Gus always says 'how do they want the game to look like?' ... Matty says 'It's never been better'. I agree with Mat, we want to see tries and the playmakers rise to the top.

Really enjoyed this episode. The concussion stuff at the end was really good. I have been involved in Rugby league at a local level all my life as a player, coach and currently an administrator. i have a son about to enter the sport and i have had concerns about it, everyone wants what is best for their child, team sport and rugby league provide so much to character, social skills, teamwork, determination, physical out let in a safe space in the teen years etc, but at a risk. While we can't make it risk free, as anything has a degree of risk, it's great to see people at the top of the sport showing the care for the players and it's not just a legal covering ass show. Having a former player say that it take away the stigma around sitting out as it's part of the framework is so good to see.

Gen Z and millennials - theyre not drinkers, and clubbers like Mattys generation did...that 80s 90s gen, the second coming of the 60s, will be the last time hoomans without surveillance and intervention will be able to cut loose. People cant afford to even go to pubs anymore. Matt is trapped in affluence also, I've got a tiny bit of money to burn each day, and blowing $20 on beers chatting to locals is one of the best ways to live on the planet... he is both blessed and cursed, cursed by celebrity, and blessed to be able to live comfortably lots of other footballers of his ilk and generation didn't get to create an empire like he did. he is a very talented man. And his most interesting chapters might yet still be ahead of him.

1:00:36 the game is faster and more skilful but it lacks imagination. The attack never happens except between two ten metre strips at each end of the field and every try looks the same. Live the athleticism of the wingers but aside from that, the game is monotonous. It’s coached to within an inch of its life.

Showing the fight was stupid. Especially because it was a NSW man pumping up a QLD'er for hitting a NSW legend--also it comes across as Matthew trying to diminish his brother's career.

1:01 Bullshit. The AFL has beaten NRL in every measurement you want to measure. Pretty sure the NRL finals series saw a lot of free tickets given out to fill Accor stadium for the TV visuals....speaks volumes. For my money. I've watched AFL and NRL finals. The AFL commentary is always on, 100%, excitement plus because something is always happening on an AFL field. NRL. The commentators are filling the spaces between exciting play, such as when a player scores or almost scores a try. The rest of the time is filled with statistics of the team's previous performance or individual player performance. The energy of the whole commentary is considerable lack lustre compared to what you hear during an AFL game. AFL is an exciting enough game to be entertaining to out of country visitors who have no idea of the rules. The game is exciting on it's own . NRL, too complex a game to be attractive to out of country visitors.

"Pretty sure the NRL finals series saw a lot of free tickets given out to fill Accor stadium for the TV visuals....speaks volumes" For one game - for a team that is based an hour and a half drive west and a team from new zealand. The AFL crowd always brings up the crowd numbers - Rugby League is reliant on television. I dont know how many times we need to beat it into your heads. The rest of your points are equally as rubbish. AFL doesnt have commentators? I find AFL confusing and complex and the rules make no sense.

You forgot to mention people leaving thr afl in droves to watch grass roots footy and the biggest put off is the crowd sound effects they add matches.
