@M.V.S-zv6ti Only because the vast majority of aviators are intelligent and skilled individuals. It takes a fair amount of effort to get a pilot certification, including medical checks in some cases. Any pin headed prick with a few grand scraped together can get on four wheels, so of course flying will _seem_ safer, just looking at statistics. But if any major mechanical failure happens, especially in a helicopter, you are in a fair bit more trouble than if the tire on your car blows.

In the late 1970s I was a crew chief of a U.S. Army UH-1(Heuy). One day over a civilian area we had a hose split. We had a trail of black smoke following us. We put it down nice and safe. Within a few minutes we had police, fire, EMS and the local news all over us. It was like a three ring circus. Someone had called in a aircraft crash. We contacted the base got what we needed, I repaired the craft and we return to base. Makes for a good story to tell the grandchildren. Let's them know once upon a time grandpa was cooler then they are. GOOD TIMES, GREAT MEMORIES. 😊

I was once an MP and was just posted to (then) CFB Shearwater in NS, Canada. At the time, there were both fixed and rotary assets flying out of this base. Sea Kings and T-33. The very first time l observed a Sea King crew practicing auto rotation landing, I honestly thought it was going in. I raced up the hill (as the Airfield was above my horizon), both puzzled, why there wasn't a greasy plume of smoke or upon cresting, and relieved at seeing it then lifting off safe and sound, was l educated a tad at the mysterious world of rotary winged flight. Nearly had a heart attack that day...😅

@pilsplease7561 that is unfortunate you've had negative experiences with lw enforcement when visiting here. I was with the Alberta Highway Patrol prior to joining the military as an MP. I would have regular interactions with Americans in the trucking industry as well as tourists from time to time. I can only think of a few instances where things weren't totally cool between us. I remember one lady who repeatedly circumvented the requirements to report at the weigh scale with her tour bus. She had to be reminded she in a foreign country and needed to obey the law or she could ask to have routes that didn't include crossing the border. Otherwise, my American interactions were always cordial.

Amen. I've been stopped 5 times (5-20 mph over) over the past 10 years or so every time since I carry legally and my state required licence, I have both my id/licence ready all windows down and dome light on. Tell them immediately sorry to intrupt officer but as you can see I am licenced to carry, my firearm is located xyz, how would you like to proceed. Immediately the officers let down their tension and can tell right away through all that I'm just dude exercising their rights, and often we small talk about different hands guns, what they carry etc. Create that initial rapport as most police officers are pro 2A and not once have I got ticket, only earnings. Officers can see right through bullshit or an honest person! atleast here in Illinois, when they run your plate before contact it will tell them licenced owner, even though not illegal to tell them unless asked, it's just simple commen sense and respect that officers don't hear enough of.

"the vehicle you're flying doesn't seem like it's very complicated" lmfao, oh my sweet summer child................. Heli flying is about as difficult as it gets when it comes to operating a vehicle. Very few can do it. Go buy some decent heli sim hardware and get MSF2020, DCS or Aerofly FS4 on PC. Better yet, you can just go pay for heli flight lessons, it's enormously expensive, but if you have disposable income and time, it's probably fun if you can handle the insane technicality, memorization, hand-eye coordination, and focus of aviation. Won't sugar coat it, piloting real aircraft is not for everyone, and I mean, it's an extremely niche hobby and career that is starving for applicants. Very few people can qualify for it in the civilian world. Less and less people are becoming pilots, and more so for helicopters. Flight simming is almost as real minus the felt g-forces and real world error (that can also be simulated). I would suggest to start there. Maybe go get a FPV quadcopter or look into some RC heli stuff. fyi, that's a Robinson R22, the most dangerous aircraft money can buy. More deaths from that aircraft's errors than any other in aviation history. To put it lightly concerning your curiosity of the cost, operation, ownership of such a craft; unless you are already aeronautically inclined with these crafts, you are not the market for such a thing.

@@evolicious Telling someone to pick up a sim doesn't really aid your point. You can be heli compotent fairly quickly using just a keyboard. It's not the most fun in the world but it's doable.

1000 hours... Mother of goodness that is a wild. That is nearly 42 days of flight. I tip my hat to our pilots. That is serious dedication.

Yeah they definitely take training serious. For flying planes Congress mandates you have to have 1500 real flight hours(simulators don't count) before you can apply to work for an airline, and then have to go through additional training for that. So every pilot you see in the US have been flying for years already. Its a great job salary/benefits wise but it's definitely a massive time/money commitment before you can start making money as an airline pilot.

@@codykeane6107 Wow. I had no idea. Funny enough I've been around planes all my life. A dear friend was a Sheriff and a private flier for some of the ranches. I flew with him every summer. When I was 18, He let me take the stick on his bi-plane when I was in the rear co-pilot seat for long enough to appreciate the finesse it takes. He was a former Marine with a bad past so I didn't ask many questions pertaining to his past. It is not our place to ask such things...

As a owner of a Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter, the town I grew up in took a long time to allow me to land on a soccer field to go and grab a bite to eat 2 blocks away. Well, its not everyday someone owns a former military helicopter. A year ago, took The Black Hawk to CVS for some travel toothpaste and other travel like stuff. CVS was a 24 hour store. Landed at 1130 at night in the parking lot. 30 minutes later as I was returning to the chopper with my wife (2 pilots to operate) There were 4 police cars next to it. One was a aspiring helicopter pilot. Played through the sound system, Creedence Clearwater Revival's Fortunate Son.

I lived in the Florida Keys for a while. There was a breakfast place that had a landing pad. One day a big ass helicopter landed there and out came a whole family for breakfast on the gulf side lol. Best part? There was a convertible parked right next to the pad and that guy was NOT happy about all the sand lol.

He get called in for a normal landing, but several years back we had a small plane actually crash within yards of the edge of the interstate and despite there being a good 20 people milling around the crash site not one of them called 911. It wasn't until I drove by headed the opposite direction, saw the crowd and no obvious police or EMT presence and decided my adding to the crowd would be pointless, and called 911 that they had even heard about a plane crash. Unfortunately there were no survivors. From what I saw it looked like it was a direct nose first into the wooded hillside.
