Welcome back! Today, I present to you our fall update on the mature American chestnut trees. If you're new here, every update I go over each American chestnut tree to assess their progress against the chestnut blight. Sit back and relax as I provide you with an update on these majestic rare trees. Thank you all so much for your support on my American chestnut series.

I have high hopes for the American Chestnut. As a kid I watched both Elms and Chestnuts die in Massachusetts in the 1970s. Since then scientists have bred an American Elm resistant to the Dutch Elm disease. I've planted one at my old house that's now mature, and another at my current house that's about 12 feet tall. Unless I cut down another tree, I won't have room for a Chestnut, but I'm rooting for them.

Thank you. Few people today know about the American Chestnut. It is one of the most important species on the planet. The American Chestnut Foundation has been doing backcrossing with good success, but has anyone tried using Crisper cas9 to insert a disease resistant gene into them? It would be terrific if some developed resistance on their own, so keep looking. I have 3 here in California that are from Oregon stock that was brought west before the blight. One has a disease that has killed 3 of its 4 trunks. The last one made it through the year without any signs of disease. My hope is to get some seedlings going and spread them around the West Coast. I do want to taste some too. The disease could be verticillium, my greatest fear is Sudden Oak Death, a big concern here. My guess is they have little resistance to that as well and efforts need to be taken to make the chestnuts resistant to that too. Also, people hear about how wonderful the American Chestnut is so they plant non native chestnuts. This is a huge mistake and will lead to a mishmash of various hybrid swarms destroying the return of a pure genetic line. I know that sounds racist but we need to preserve this excellent species.. Thanks again.

I hope you're able to collect seeds. Big problem here is that are red oak trees are getting hit with something unknown. Already lost like 14 trees with more on the way. The droughts were getting in the summer I think are causing the trees to be stressed which is allowing diseases to get in. I'm kind of guilty of planting some hybrid chestnuts as well. Good thing is non-native chestnuts can't mess up the genetics of American chestnuts too much because they cannot grow in the woods very well. Almost every other Chestnut variety needs full sun. Thank you for watching I really appreciate it hope you'll check out more videos.

I believe there's a huge American Chestnut in the back yard at 10 Brewster Street, Plymouth Massachusetts. I last saw it in the 1990's before I movedto another state. I identified it pre internet using library books. If you look on Google maps you can see the top of it behind the house, which has a big round tower and is brown and white.

I believe there is an American Chestnut that has about a 4ft diameter trunk behind the Victorian house at 10 Brewster Street Plymouth Massachusetts. It's on private property but there's a parking lot next door that you might be able to see the tree from. On Google maps you can see the top of the tree up behind the house. I have not been there since the 1990's and I identified it then or before using library books.

The spot on the first tree is probably just the wood growing faster then the bark. Probably because of the lean, the tree is producing reaction wood to compensate for the stress of the lean. The wood you see closing over wounds is actually called wound wood. Callus is what starts the formation of wound wood.

You can also see less lichen on that part of the tree because of the rapid growth. Lichen likes slow growth because it doesn't like being disturbed.

I have read that the temperature in a water bath to kill the worms is 126 F. , and that the water must be at that temperature for a certain length of time, but I can't recall how long, before it will kill them. The time starts once the water containing the chestnuts reaches that 126 F.
@jeremybyington
@jeremybyington 7 ай бұрын
126F seems like it would harm the nut. What about just soaking them in room temperature water for several hours? Wouldn’t the worms try to escape to get air? I do that to my blackberries and the larvae fall to the bottom of the container. Or what about adding a bunch of salt to the water to kill the worms and then rinse them off and stratify them in the fridge for a few months.
@user-gw2sp3zt5h
@user-gw2sp3zt5h 7 ай бұрын
Jeremy, my short experience with the nuts is that the hard shell would effectively would seal out the water. From what I have read, the 126 F does not injure the nuts. Also, refrigerated temperatures, again based on my reading does not kill them, and it was reported that they go ahead and bore out of the nuts while still in the fridge.

Is there anything to combat the blight?
@katespainhower1963
@katespainhower1963 7 ай бұрын
No. When it came through in the early 1900's there was nothing that could be done and withing 50 years it moved through the entire range. People tried to help by cutting down the trees with blight but they didn't know that the trees around the chess it's carried the blight too and hurt more than it helped. It is absolutely amazing to see these trees going to battle and to know their genetics could save a keystone species.
@katespainhower1963
@katespainhower1963 7 ай бұрын
They are quite amazing trees. The blight doesn't kill the roots so there are ancient trees out there that have been shooting saplings off from their trunks and roots for 50+ years. The blight doesn't live in soil but when the saplings get a few years old they get blight are basically choked out by it and then they die too. Most don't reach sexual maturity to be able to make more groves.
@blackpowder4016
@blackpowder4016 6 ай бұрын
Hypovirus attacks the blight and affects it's virulence. The blight is in Europe too but European chestnuts are holding on in most places because the hypovirus is endemic there, especially in Italy and Spain. The virus prevents the fungus from spreading from tree to tree as well reducing its ability to do damage. It's long been known that the blight can't attack chestnut roots. Assuming there's something in the soil that attacks or inhibits the blight researchers have packed and wrapped blight cankers with soil and found the cankers heal. There's obviously a microbe in the soil that kills the blight but it has not been identified yet. It's likely a bacteria that produces an antifungal agent. Keep your fingers crossed.
