"His daddy ain't 💩!!!" James Garner, the OG TV Maverick, playing Bret's dad, is some great legacy casting. And it makes everything he does to and for Bret better in future watches.

I went to see this in the cinema and cried when James Garner came on because it reminded me of being little and watching it with my gran when I was little. She lived on the other side of the world to me at the time. As soon as I got home I made a long and expensive phone call 😊

James Garner Did play Brett Maverick but what no one seems to remember is he also played Beauregard Maverick AKA Pappy In one Ep. Brett & Bart ( Jack Kelly ) ride into town for Pappy's wedding. I don't remember the details but at the end of the Ep. the 3 B B & B Had to make a hasty exit out of town followed by a Posse close behind, the Posse is ambushed and scared away by an unknown gunman we find out is Uncle Bentley played by you guessed it Jack Kelly. In conclusion 1 maybe 2 of the original characters played by the original actors, ( Beauregard /Pappy) & ( Uncle Bentley ) ( I thought I seen Jack Kelly in the background as 1 of the Gamblers ? ) That's the real Beauty of the Movie.

I always call this movie Chemistry 101. The scenes between Mel, James, and Jodie are pure gold. I also love this vision of the west as essentially being nothing but con artists trying to rip each other off. Awesome. Oh, and Graham Greene is bloody brilliant. Chief Joseph is too funny for words. By the way, James Garner starred in one of history's great television series, The Rockford Files, back in the seventies. His character, Jim Rockford, is absolutely fantastic.

I remember it like it was yesterday the audience reaction in the theatre that moment when Mel comes face to masked face with the bank robber, who is clearly Danny Glover, they stop to look at each other breaking the fourth wall, then resume running from the law where Danny clearly says, 'I'm too old for this shit!!!' Gradial trickles of delayed laughter as pockets of audience catch on to what's going on, then big laugh, Glover says iconic line, wild applause. It helps Richard Donner who directed this movie also directed all four of the Lethal Weapons. I think he had an 'in' with these two guys.

"My old pappy always used to say: There is no more deeply satisfying religious experience... than cheatin' on a cheater." "I never said that once. You've been misquoting me all your life." "What, we're going to quibble over fine points?" "You never even get close. Give me some credit." Fun Fact: The first film released on Kodak's EXR 2386 polyester print stock. Not A Remake Fact: James Garner, who plays Zane Cooper, was the original Bret Maverick in Maverick (1957). So this movie is a sequel to the original series. Poker Enthusiast Fact: In the final scene Maverick (Mel Gibson) shows his cards one at a time; this is called "slow-rolling" and is a big breach of table etiquette in poker, even in modern times. Cameos Cameos Fact: Reba McEntire is an extra in the opening poker scene of the movie. Margot Kidder is Margret Mary, one of the pilgrims robbed of their mission money. The film's cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond appears as landscape painter Albert Bierstadt. Charlie Brown Fact: Jodie Foster's character's gracelessness in the film stems from the first scene she shot, when she waited for Mel Gibson to help her down from the stagecoach. Instead, he took her parasol and walked away. She tried to get down alone, and flopped to the ground. Director Richard Donner liked it so much that he kept the shot in the film, and staged more scenes of Foster stumbling, being dumped through windows, etc.

Piece of trivia you might be interested in: The original TV series was supposed to be a serious western and the first 2 episodes were just that. While filming the 3rd episode, they had an elaborate fight scene still to shoot, but they were running out of daylight and it was the last day of filming. Someone got the brilliant idea to throw everyone into a nearby cornfield. They filmed cornstalks waving to sounds of "Oof!" and "Smack!" and the like. Every few seconds someone would be thrown out of the cornfield an address the people watching with a silly or witty comment and then dive back in to the cornfield to fight some more. Audiences loved it so much that they decided to keep the comedic irreverent tone through the rest of the series. It's what it became known for. If they hadn't have done that, we might have been watching a brutally serious remake instead of the fun, crazy film that we got.

As a kid I got to stay up late once a week to watch Star Trek: The Next Generation with my parents. However, one time my parents were both working an early shift and so they left me before the end of the episode. I assured them I’d put myself to bed…but I didn’t. Because this film started immediately after the TNG episode and as soon as I heard that old timey western music I knew I had to watch it!! It was only like the third film non kids film I’d ever seen and it was a magical experience. It’s never lost that childhood joy for me and I’m delighted to see you watching it.

33:02 that’s Dan Hedaya. 33:09 the one with the gun is Clint Black who sang the song “Good Run of Bad Luck” that was playing in the background. 33:30 that gun holder was Denver Pyle who played Uncle Jesse in the “Dukes of Hazzard” tv series in the late 70s early 80s. 33:54 Alfred Molina who played Doc Ock in “Spider-Man”, he was in “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, he was in “Boogie Nights”, “The Da Vinci Code”, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” with Nicolas Cage, many other movies, tv shows and animated voiceovers. 35:35 this couple are country music artists Kathy Mattea and Outlaw singer Waylon Jennings 38:26 look how cool Maverick was he gave the Commodore money to stay in the game cause he didn’t have enough to call the hand. 39:22 see they can’t say that Maverick switched that card cause Angel slid it over to him and it stayed on the table until he picked it up to show them. Gotta love the way Maverick revealed that Ace. 40:19 remember majority of people don’t have guns cause they weren’t allowed. 42:06 no cause Maverick would’ve gotten the money back and the Commodore would have to find someone to hire to rob Maverick 43:59 did you notice how Coop’s left gun was reversed that was set for Maverick to use it. 45:06 I wish they would’ve done a sequel where they chased Annabelle for their money. You should check a couple episodes of the tv show “Maverick” where James Garner plays the role of Bret Maverick. Look at James Garner in other movies like “Space Cowboys” with Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones and Donald Sutherland (who just passed away yesterday). Another movie he’s in is “My Fellow Americans” with Jack Lemmon. There’s also two older movies called “Support Your Local Sheriff” & “Support Your Local Gunfighter”. They both star James Garner and Harry Morgan
