This movie is a masterclass in how to do a sequel to a much beloved, iconic movie. I also love how they took some offhand comments from Stinger when he was chewing out Maverick and Goose, and from Carole and turned Penny into a full character with a believable history and serious chemistry with Maverick. Stinger: a history of high-speed passes over five air control towers and one admiral's daughter!" Goose: "Penny Benjamin" Carole: "Goose told me all about that time you went ballistic with Penny Benjamin."

Cyclone (John Hamm) was trying to be a hard-ass Commander, but you could tell he became personally invested in his pilots when in the CIC every order he gave that required a hard decision he choked up. "Send them" "there's nothing he can do for Maverick, not in an F-18".. his voce broke both times. Very subtle, brilliant acting.

There was a lot of diversity amongst the characters, but none of it was used for an agenda. Their race, gender, sexuality, background… we didn’t need to know any of it, and they never told us any of it. And that’s how it should be. If it isn’t part of the story, leave it out. That’s what they did with TG: Maverick.

I saw the original in theatre when I was 9. Lost count how many times I've seen it since. Top Gun: Maverick is a masterpiece and masterclass in how to do a sequel. So many throwbacks and heartstrings pulled. One of the biggest heartstring pulled, I don't think most actually picked it up. When Rooster says, "Talk to me, Dad." Yes, very emotional,, but even more emotional when Maverick responds with "Don't think, just do." Maverick has filled in as his father since Goose's death, so his father did talk to him.
@worldtraveler3773

Maverick raised Rooster and he was his dad (stepfather ) "Talk to me dad " and Maverick's voice comes through...( when Mav says talk to me Goose this is followed by a deafening silence) On the carrier " It's what my dad would have done " Look at Mav's eyes when he realized that Rooster had thought of him ( Maverick earlier that day had saved Rooster life) it was father & son relationship. They ware very close when Rooster found out that Mav pulled his papers

Amazing movie, but I STRONGLY disagree with the statement that it's a "masterclass in how to do a sequel." In fact it's guilty of a laundry list of things sequels SHOULDN'T do. If the movie wasn't good or subpar, more people would realize that.

The one redeeming trait of Hangman is that he openly acknowledges when someone else (usually Maverick) does something awesome. It means that deep down inside, beyond the bully on the outside, he really just cares about trying to be the best. It's a little bit of humility that he needs to eventually learn not to be a bully. He has so much potential, but not this time on this mission.

Actually, the commander is sympathetic for Maverick. They had a rocky relationship, but you can tell when he lets him be team leader he actually is starting to believe and getting excited. You can also tell that he hates to leave Maverick, but it is the only option without losing every other member as the 5th Gen fighters catch up to them. He literally chokes up when saying "there's nothing you can do for Maverick", which is amazing acting. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rqmUdpVktr-VYac.html Hard decisions, but it would be the right decision in that situation.

Both were based on original films that were iconic, yet they still surpassed the originals in almost every aspect of cinema. They both were also the definitive action films of their respective eras. Where TG:Maverick might have the edge over T2 is in the emotional impact of the film. There's plenty of tears shed by audiences watching TG:Mav, not as much watching T2. However, they are basically 1A and 1B when debating superior sequels. TG:Mav might actually win Best Picture at the Oscars. It honestly has a shot. That would be a remarkable achievement. "The end is inevitable, Maverick. Your kind is headed for extinction." "Maybe so, sir. But not today." Fun Fact: The World War II P-51 Mustang seen in this movie is actually Tom Cruise's own airplane. Cruise is an accomplished pilot in real life. Practical Over CGI Fact: At the insistence of Tom Cruise, minimal green screen and CGI aerial shots exist in the film, and even the close up cockpit shots were taken during real in-flight sequences. This meant that much of the cast had to undergo extensive G-force training sessions to withstand the physical demands of G-force pressures during flights. RIP Iceman Fact: Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky has a relapse of throat cancer and dies from it. In real life, Val Kilmer was suffering from throat cancer at the time, resulting in his vocal cords being damaged so severely he was unable to speak. To accommodate this handicap, his character communicates through typing and only speaks three lines near the end of the scene. Those spoken lines were created via a synthetic vocal generator programmed to emulate Kilmer's voice.

I would never throw rocks at you, but understand that when I saw the first TG, at 16 years old, it introduced fighter plane action to the world. No CG back then, everyone was awestruck and wondering how they did it so well. What is funny though, is that there is realtively little CG in the flight action of this movie as well (the rockets and explosions of course, but the not the flight action). The actor always sits 2nd seat with real F18 pilots doing the manovers so the body movement and facial stress is recorded in real life.

This is a great film. It's great that almost all the flying sequences were actually real and had the actors in F18s. The scene where Maverick shoots down the first MiG was actually explained in the first top gun. Maverick explained to Charlie that he cross behind and go to guns immediately, and she said it was aggressive, then gave Maverick her phone number. So many callbacks to the original, which was very nice and a homage to all the original cast and crew. Let's hope for maverick three but, this one will be hard to beat.

I saw the original in theaters when I was 11 with my Dad who was Navy Flight Crew. I'll always love the first one, but the second one is a superior film, but it needs that first one to build those relationship blocks. Also the tech and the time that's passed has really added that parm and pepper on the pizza.

This is the sequel that had no right being as good as it is. It basically came out of left field and just surpassed all of my expectations. Honestly? Probably the movie of the year for me, no bullshit. I am super happy I got to experience it in theaters as I think it brings a whole different element that can't be reproduced at home.

Ok peeps, I just finished reading through all 298 comments (thus far) and was surprised to see only 5 or 6 mentions of Val Kilmer's real life health issues. So, now I'm super curious to know how many folks know and if anybody saw the documentary, VAL, prior to watching TG:M. I'm willing to bet that the folks in the theater who were crying the hardest probably knew/saw it. If you haven't yet, go check it out. It makes the scene with Val so much more significant.

25:26 yes, that’s exactly what I said. No way she didn’t see the bike right outside the front door. 32:36 there’s dialogue all the way through foreshadowing that Maverick may not make it to the end credits. 37:41 “how are we gonna get this museum piece in the air?” - fun fact: for the ground scenes, they actually shipped out the F-14 on display at San Diego Air and Space Museum, put it together and even got the canopy working. However, as it is a retired aircraft, the engines had been removed, and the rest of the controls that weren’t stripped were dead, so it really is a case of “how are we gonna get the museum piece in the air?” The answer to that of course is CGI. They did the CGI and VFX fantastically well in this. More fun facts: the bar scene that introduces the characters has some little Easter eggs - when we meet Penny, who is played by Jennifer Connolly, the song in the background is “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie, who starred opposite Connolly in Labyrinth. When Hangman selects a song on the jukebox he types 86… the original Top Gun came out in 1986. The song Hangman selects is “Slow Ride” by Foghat. This is playing while he teases Rooster about his slow and conservative flying style. For when Rooster plays the piano, Miles Teller learned to play the song, and what we see is a live take. They were so impressed with it that they added that performance to the OST, and edited the scene into a music video. So Miles Teller now has an officially credited cover of “Great Balls Of Fire”. The scene where Maverick takes off in Darkstar, that was a one shot take… they actually damaged the security booth, so they couldn’t do anymore takes. Has to be said, Ed Harris is an absolute beast for standing there and taking that blast wave straight to the face.

In theaters Tom Cruise had an introduction talking about how this was expressly made for the theater experience. It would not have been made without Tom Cruise's say so. I hoped it would be half as good as it was. And it was exponentially better. You are correct about the nostalgia component. So many of the people in my theater were my age or older and had seen it in theaters then. There was lots of cheers and sniffles to be had.

I can't put this one above the first the first one was right place right time. Alot of the lines in the first one if we're delivered today by actors it would be super super corny but they could pull it off back then idk why that today everyone has to deliver their lines like it's a Disney ride. I saw the first more times than I can count and it's just a special movie to me it formed my interest in flight. That said I saw this one in the theater and I loved it too. This IS A MOVIE THEATER MOVIE!! 😁 I think it was shaking the foundation of the theater!! I went in with moderate expectations and it passed my expectations for sure I just can't put it over the first one personally. 80s movies just hit different!!

Jennifer Connelly is the only face on that screen that has an Oscar. Tom got two nominations (which is damn near as good), but she's the only one to win an Oscar. When she was sent the script, an actress with those credentials said yes.

Well said about advancement but not replacing people. Supposedly people would all get jobs designing, programming, and building machines to do all of the other work, but not everyone can do those things, so they will become dependent on government and others for support. This is exactly what politicians want because it would give them even more power.

The sailboat has ballast (lead weights) at the bottom to help keep it from capsizing, along with a hydrodynamic keel (big fin underneath that you can't see) to push against the water. It can't handle every possible wind and ocean condition, but it can handle a lot more than it looks like it can.
