I suspect he or she would have done it as many times as needed, if you watch the airshow routine this is pretty standard for them. They push it a lot further than the Thunderbirds, and I've seen both many times. It helps that I'm within pretty easy driving range of two featuring airshows that aren't very expensive.

@Technicallyaddicted Tom cruise didn't actually fly the plane though. That's what he's saying. He's in the backseat, the real pilot is in front of him doing all the work. The navy would absolutely not allow tom cruise to take the controls of a plane worth that much.
@girlmastergeneral6 ай бұрын
Uh no@@Technicallyaddicted No non-military personnel are ever allowed to be in control of any government military assets without being sworn into the military. Direct Quote from the producers of the movie: "Us film producers wanted to proceed with a scene that showed Cruise flying the F18 jet. However, the film crew was denied permission by the US Navy and the US government in their bid to have the famous actor fly the actual fighter used in the shot." Bruckheimer then goes on to elaborate that the flight wing that maintains that the US Navy's jets ultimately denied Cruise's requests to fly the F18 Super Hornet, which boasts a price tag in excess of $70 million because he wasn't a certified F18 pilot or an actual member of the military. However with the assistance of skilled editing, the action sequences are convincing to even the best-trained eye. Cruise did end up flying more than a dozen sorties for the new movie, but a navy pilot was always in complete control. Pentagon military regulations bar all non-military trained personnel from ever controlling a Defense Department asset other than small arms in a preapproved training scenario, according to Glen Roberts, the chief of the Pentagon's Legal Department.

What makes this scene in particular so heavy hitting is the shit they gave Maverick prior to it "All you've taught them so far is that its not possible" And Maverick was like "..Good point. Hold my beer." It was a moment where Maverick realised he had to lead by example and physically show them what his expectation was of them. So not only could they see it for themselves but also so they could be proven that what was being asked of them was doable.
