Max Christian Friedrich Bruch (6 January 1838 - 2 October 1920), also known as Max Karl August Bruch, was a German Romantic composer and conductor who wrote over 200 works, including three violin concertos, the first of which has become a staple of the violin repertory.

While violinist Joseph Joachim had a hand in fine-tuning Max Bruch's first violin concerto, Pablo Sarasate was the direct inspiration for Bruch's second concerto. This is unfortunate, for Bruch provided the Spanish soloist a virtuoso vehicle lacking the balance and direct expression that made his first concerto so popular.
This concerto begins with a long Adagio non troppo, which Johannes Brahms found altogether troppo: "Normal people cannot endure it," he wrote. (But Brahms certainly liked the main theme of the first movement as he used it himself later in the 3rd movement of the 3rd Symphony 1883 (according to uploader)) The movement is in sonata form, the violin singing out a first theme tailored specifically to what Bruch called Sarasate's "soulful" style. This is the concerto's strongest movement, with highly expressive writing for the soloist over unobtrusive, but effective, ominous support from the orchestra. Despite a few high-tension passages replete with double stops, this movement does not require fireworks from the soloist.
The brief second movement, described as a recitative, picks up the pace somewhat with a sequence of declamatory passages for the violin, cheered on by orchestral outbursts, that link the outer movements thematically. The movement also functions somewhat as a big, accompanied cadenza.
The finale, an Allegro molto in loose sonata form, brings on the pyrotechnics. The soloist uses the rather Lalo-like themes as little more than an excuse for virtuosic display, with the orchestra almost fully subservient to the violin's survey of bowing effects and showy double-stop writing. The music does ease off from time to time, but these more relaxed episodes still require ardent playing from the soloist, and the rip-roaring final measures are clearly designed to bring an audience to its feet.

Thanks for posting this one! I like his second conserto far more than his first (wich is so much more played)...very good recording and interpretation of this as well…

Que gran maestro Bruch! This concerto is as great as number one. It is sad that is out of the repertoire. I love Beethoven, Mendelsohn, Brahms and Chaikovsky's unique concertos but sincerely the orchestras programing and conductors MUST change a bit the policies of repeating once and again their violin music and go more through Saint-Saëns, Bruch (not just Nr 1) For instance Schumann' violin concerto is almost forgotten. Thanks for posting!!

I feel the same about the piano and orchestra repertoire. The wonderful second piano concerto by Balakirev and the anazing Schubert-Kabalevsky fantasia in F minor are totally ignored, and goodness knows why!

Unfortunatelly Schuman's is one of those pieces which has bad reputation. Just like some pieces are overated, others are underated.

Bueno pero Saint-Saens era un gran orquestador por lo que coincido que está infravalorado… pero en cuanto a algunas de las obras orquestales de Schumann pues ya sabes que al igual que Chopin existe mucha controversia sobre que tan buenos eran realmente escribiendo para orquesta. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Loving this. I only started playing and learning this recently having played the first concerto. I wonder why Bruch composed such a long third movement. The 6ths are a pleasure to play. Wonderful lyrical work all round x

I remember reading a horrid review of this on a website called CD Now a long time ago. Anyone remember that site? Amazon bought them out eventually but it was great. The review said, "Starting with the blowsy timpani thuds in the first movement, this is a bad recording, sloppy violin playing by Mordkovitch. She hacks and crashes her way through it." For some reason I never forgot it, maybe because I am such a fan of her playing. She was a very important violinist - Oistrakh pupil, one of the best to come out of the Moscow violin stable.

I think that if the second and third movements of this concerto were as good as its first, it would probably be played as often as the first violin concerto. An engaging and enjoyable work overall nonetheless.

Max Bruch was basically a conservative composer, with a moderate romntic soul. He was able to write beautiful melodies with wise harmonies, to build up solid movements along with architectural standards, but we should not look for the passionate accents of Liszt, the audacious harmony of Wagner, nor even the deeep lyrism of Chopin. THis makes his concertos and symphonies very nice to be heard. We are never lost by odd constructions or far reaching harmonies, and the melodies and developements that emerge from his compositional pen are always very enchanting. This explains the worldwide success of his first concerto for violin, which should not eclipse the following, which is a very beautiful "moderately romantic" score quite interesting and very nice to be heard. It should be a part of the repertoire in the same way than the first concerto.

What I hear in the 1st concerto and the Scottish fantasy is something that sounds like a referral to classical means whenever Bruch's lyricism is not leading the way into romantic territory. This produces a very tidy, upbeat effect and sounds modern and neo-classical - these works foreshadow Prokofiev's Classical Symphony (which even shares a distinctive chord shift with the 1st concerto) and the late Strauss concertos.

I find his style very similar to Mendelssohn. Mendelssohn and Bruch violin concertos are quite similar. Arguably perhaps Schumann, and more remotely, Brahms. In that it is a balanced form within which he tries to achieve lyricism and beauty. And why not Chopin, too, although he has somewhat more of a tender yet dramatic tone. Like more lyrical

What did Brahms mean by "Normal people could not endure it" ?!. I like Brahms, but he could be an arrogant sod at times.. Just look how he ripped apart other composers around him. This is a fascinating piece and should be played far more often...

I don't think arrogant is quite the right word, but he certainly had high ideals and standards, and was not great with relationships eg. Joachim. He was also very tough on himself, and very helpful to Dvorak and Strauss if I remember correctly.
