Can you believe that "Chocolate" was Max/Changmin's solo debut? After 17 years in the industry, he finally had his official solo debut in 2020 with this song, which is the title track from his first mini solo album. And in true Changmin TVXQ style he blows it out of the water. Both Changmin and U-Know had a few solo singles before this, but it wasn't until 2019 for U-Know with his song "Follow" and then Max, almost a year later, that they finally both have solo albums. Changmin/Max has been nicknamed Bambi by his fans and he has taken it on as a sort of spirit animal that represents him, so I think the deer in his "Devil" MV is supposed to symbolize him. If you read the lyrics, the song is about having self doubts and bad thoughts and harboring those feelings within your heart. So in the end the deer (himself) becomes like the Devil because he has now embraced those feelings. During U-Know's and his reaction video to the "Devil" MV, Changmin said the forest you see him in is a real forest and they had to take a boat to get there. They used drones with lights on them to light the area to give it that spooky effect. And although "Devil" is a remake of a song by Alex Runo, Changmin wrote his own lyrics for the song and gave it a different storyline than the original version. As you noticed, SM used "Devil" to draw Changmin/TVXQ into its SM Culture Universe with the reference to Kwanyga in the lyrics and the pink planet you see in the MV, etc. I guess as Rising Gods of the East, it makes sense that TVXQ could be otherworldly-beings just like the rest of SM's groups and artists, in order to connect their storyline to the rest of SM's Universe story. "Devil" is the title track off his second solo mini album Devil, which was released in 2022. His "Fever" stage video was a pre-release from the same album that was part of SM's New Year's Eve SMTown SMCU Express 2021-22 livestream concert. Yes, you're right, the whole "Maniac" promotion video is a homage to classic Hitchcock horror movies. The opening is a nod to Psycho, and a large part of the video also references The Shining, Vertigo, The Birds, and even The Big Lebowski, North by Northwest, Brazil and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, etc. You would be surprised, he actually did a lot of stunts for this MV, just check out how much fun he had filming "Maniac," kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nseSmpumzdjSg4k.html. If you remember, TVXQ's fandom is Cassiopeia and their fan color is red -- which is why you see one of the primary colors in most of TVXQ's MVs is red -- and when you attend a TVXQ concert you will see an ocean of red. TVXQ have always had a more sexy and mature concept, but unless you really delve in deep and get to know their Japanese songs in particular, a lot of new fans have no idea how sexy they can really be. Fun fact: Changmin got married in 2020 right before his "Chocolate" MV was released, so his solo songs and MVs are much more "adult". And he became a father to a boy in 2022 as well. They are men, not boys. :D Tohoshinki (TVXQ) are also one of the most famous singers in Japan as well, even among Japanese artists. And like SHINee and BoA, they are so popular in Japan that they are considered part of the mainstream music scene. TVXQ has one of the biggest worldwide fan bases and they sell out some of the largest concert venues in the world. They are one of SM Entertainment's top selling groups, easily selling out concert tours around the world. Fever is such a masterpiece

Because of their come back, many kpop fans online are just tuning in to Changmin. I'm glad that 20 years in his game, peoole are still finding out abt him and be amazed at his skills. And ppl have been asking for more older idols who can sing wellll if people try to actually listen to other kpop group/solo then they'll know idols like Changmin is still running the business successfully!

If not for the ageism in Kpop and xenophobia in the rest of the world, Changmin (and Yunho) would be some of the biggest stars in the world. Their talent and charisma is insane. People forget how young they were when they debuted and when they had to take up the task of keeping TVXQ afloat when over half their group left. Lesser performers would have folded under the pressure. Devil was my SOTY and I will forever be salty that it didn't get the attention it deserved.

When Fever wasn't even halfway done and you had already said it was your favorite, I was like "and wait for the piano in the bridge" lmao, I knew that part would blow your mind. Changmin did an amazing job.

When I watch Fever in SMtown online concert, I have goosebumps and chills during the whole performance. He is so cool, full of charming and such a powerful performer. After SM upload the stage on youtube, I literally search reaction to this everyday but very few ppl knew about this

Changmin is the first SM artist that was coached by legendary SM vocal coach/songwriter Yoo Young Jin, a group that also includes DO of Exo and Winter of Aespa. Changmin is an amazing vocal talent. You should check out the song "Priority," which is a collaboration by Changmin, Taeyeon, and Winter. Also, whoever wrote Maniac was probably a fan of Todd Rundgren, particularly the Bat Out of Hell album (which Rundgren produced).

Look I have ALOT of favorite vocalists in K Pop but Max Changmin has been and will always be at the top of that list and you see now why. And yessss Fever is hands down my favorite Max song and probably in my top 5 of all time for all of K Pop. Thank you for this reaction ❤

Hope you do Yunho, Junsu, and Jaejoong solo stuffs too. They are really good even tho Jaejoong and Junsu blacklisted from the industry after the spilt.

I think the promotion part is just that it was the music video for a bside. Chocolate was his first official solo album (yes, yes they both did not get solo albums until 15+ years into their career) but he had solo songs in albums and also had a pre-military solo song with a music video. I would recommend watching the videos for "Me Myself & I" and "All That Love" as well! Yunho has also done multiple videos for one of his solo album, each song in Noir has a MV and I think it's worth watching them all. Loco's video is a lot of fun! It will make the video maybe way too long but I think the storytelling will make more sense to you if you watch the whole Reality Show short film instead of just Vuja De. Finally, those aren't *Korean title tracks but as you liked Changmin's musical coded songs the most I'd recommend listening to the following: Fated, Sweat, Reboot which are all from their Japanese albums, and I'll add Mirrors (JP) and Getaway (KR) which go really hard and are super cool songs!

Devil was one of my favorite albums released in 2022. It is so good!! I also love it because it has so many genres we don't see too often in kpop

Devil was both my song and album of the year. Every single b side, including Maniac and Fever, are wildly creative and varied. It is a mini album of original songs that feels like it is a “Best Of” album. I also stand by my belief that Maniac and Fever are two of the greatest Meatloaf songs (not made by Meatloaf) of all time.

Chocolate was his first Korean solo album/ solo debut . Both Changmin and Yunho have released a Japanese solo album before their Korean solo albums ( U Know Y and Close To You) as a gift before enlistment. They also have been doing a solo song each on every TVXQ album since they became a duo. well Chocalate is the debut and at the same time it is not. Well being more specific is his first release as a soloist in Korea, he had other solos in albums of the group and he debuted as a soloist in Japan many years before his "korean solo debut"

TVXQ and JYJ were among my top favorites "back in the days" when I was new to kpop (found it in 2011), and although I was a bit more into JYJ, and don't listen to them as much as I used to, I still love them all. 🥰 Hope you will check out JYJ and their solo's as well.
