2023 was an amazing year for gaming all around!

I used to be an MK player primarily but I have to say I've been fully converted to SF. I would legit argue that SF6 is one of the best ever, up there with the greats. You can seriously tell that the guys behind the game love the series and the genre, it feels like a love letter to both in a time where they really needed to bounce back.

I got into fighting games this year, Greatist thing that happened to me

SF6 was the first fighting game I fell in love with. I put 300 hours into it in a couple of months and it continues to captivate me. I checked my steam review and was actually shocked: the graph that shows activity each month was pretty low across the entire beginning of the year, then it just surges in June, July and August. I mostly play action rpgs (Fromsoft, soulslikes, Monster Hunter, etc.), and I had no prior interest in fighting games besides playing them like once a year with a friend, then SF6 came in and completely changed my appreciation of fighting games, I understand their appeal now and why so many people love them. I also started to gain an appreciation for the FGC as a whole, to the point where I actively keep up with the CPT and competitive scene of SF6 (and other fgs) which I have never done for an esport before, and man high-level competition in fighting games is just thrilling to watch. Basically, I have a new obsession now and SF6 is to blame.

I'm gonna give it to SF6 because it is such a HUGE upgrade from SF5. From the roster, to gameplay, to modes, everything

SF6 is so good I'm a filthy casual but I am always watching high rank fights on YT. I would never have done that for a fighting game before.

Man, just seeing Korone is Max's thumbnail brings me untold joy. So glad that Idol Showdown got as much hype and recognition behind it, that dev team made an absolute incredible package for free.

Street Fighter 6 is just perfect to me, it brought me back to actively playing after like 30 years away from the arcade, and I just could rave about the brilliance of the overall package. World Tour is great, Battle Hub is sick, the netcode is amazing, training mode rules.

SF6 reignited the child in me, last time I was this much into a fighting game and wanted to do well in was Tekken 5 on PS2. A truly well deserved Fighting GOTY

I'm honestly surprised how good and fun Granblue is. I dropped super hard from MK1 and SF6 didn't click with me at all in all aspects. I already invested more time in GB than both those games combined and I still go back for more. Unexpected surprise of the year for me.

Street fighter 6 has been such a fun and rewarding experience, having a new release from two of my favorite fighting game franchises has been satisfying to say the least

Grandblue Fantasy has the potential to become the next great 2d fighting IP. The new mechanics, balance tweaking and huge amount of content makes it an excellent title. Mortal Kombat 1 just made me buy MK X, that game was the peak of the franchise.

I really think Granblue holds its own with Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. Ranked isn't quite as addictive as SF6's and there are some frustrations I have with some of the game systems, but having character progression and unpaid loot boxes, good online and Grabruise sort of stuff, flashy and flexible system mechanics, learning features even down to character specific fuzzy tutorials. SUPER underrated is the campanion thing; having a little character cheer you up or cheer you on during and after sets. And obviously it's visually stunning with a ton of character and identity. And you don't have to pay a penny if you want to just get into it and learn the game before committing. Of course SF is more influential, but as far as the games themselves go I'm not sure I could decide between SF6 or Granblue. But that's a good place to be in as a fighting game player.

Mortal kombat 1 shouldn't really be considered. It should be street fighter 6 vs granblue fantasy versus rising. Both games are so fun, and complete, and full of content compared to mortal kombat 1.

SF6 also has this insane ability to bring in new player with World Tour and it manages to keep them after their done with WT. I never would have found this channel if SF6 was anything less than it is, and I'm still playing it and experimenting with different characters and i'm slowly transitioning from Modern to Classic controls. I've never put 50 hours into a fighting game before and I breached 100 with SF6. I'm looking forward to it's future so much.

It has been a really great year for fighting games truly and not just for the main release titles of SF6 & MK1 coming out but also indie fighting games like Pocket Bravery & Idol Showdown which I'm hoping for more characters and content for that game. For SF6 is also at it's pinnacle with how the game runs smoothly and how well the characters look, not to mentioned the single player content which I know not everyon in the FGC is into playing the World Tour and creating their avatars but it was still much enjoyable for me at least picking street fights,doing mini games, interacting with other of the world warriors & even custom creating moves for your avatar in the Battle hub and pulling off sick combos with them. The same for MK1 for as a big MK fan I like it's innovatived story mode (but honestly I just love every NRS story mode in general despite some everyone elses opinion) as well as Invasions where it's sorta like the Krypt but not really. And the gameplay is really engaging, at first I didn't like the idea of kameos but slowly enjoying a lot now. I will admit these games have their problems (mostly for me is their microtransactions) but much like with SF4 & 5 it will gradually get better overtime with more updates and such. And couldnt wait to see how that will be coming this year and foward with even newer games coming out like Tekken 8.

hard to really beat SF6 as best fighting game of the year tbh, it's just really good. Granblue has really good potential to be a great fighting game and the free edition really gives people a way to just try the game out before deciding to purchase, which is really good. Not a lot of games with demos or a free to try model anymore.

When you think about the fact SF6 has not been patched balance wise since release and has a full roster of characters that are all viable decent choices regardless of rank it’s a legitimately astounding accomplishment. It has an absolutely awesome training mode, decent single player, good online, ranked that’s constantly being worked on, replay system. It’s a triple A title that has actual real noticeable polish, and goes to show what can be done when a game company makes the right call to delay a game release. Hopefully other developers take notice, it definitely earned fighting game of the year if not game of the year

In the perspective of someone who is very new to this world of fighting games, SF6 just took the crown as my favorite game of the past year, I won't ever forget that my journey with fighting games started with SF6

I feel like Max has played an unprecedented amount of different characters this year. Usually there might be like 1 or 2 characters in each fighting game he’s interested in but with both SF6 and MK1 he played several in each which to me says a lot about how fun each game is. Like come on who would’ve though Max would play so much of a character like Havik? Or on the SF side who would’ve thought he’d get into playing a character like Marisa? Those aren’t the type of characters he usually plays but it’s the system and mechanics around them that made them more interesting than usual

I’ve more than doubled my time in SF5 for 6 years, in 6 months of SF6. How amazing the games are, how fast you get to play, how good the players are, how many NEW players are coming to the game and loving it. It’s my GOTY 2023 by such a huge margin.

Street Fighter 6 because its the only fighting game I played this year and the only one I had to. Even though I haven't played it as much as I thought I would, I just have so much fun every time I go back and play it for several matches. Not to mention its my first SF game since like SF 2.

Sf6 has brought back the strong love I have for street fighter since sf4. It is definitely my favourite fighting game of all time! The way they changed Kens moveset is a work of art!

truly phenomenal, and unlikely, that both Capcom and NRS would massively course correct with their new releases. but here we are.

I think SF6 will get it's gameplay update with the Akuma update, since he'll be the last one of the first round of DLC. Maybe with ED, since that's the halfway point of the DLC, but something to update the game would be nice.

SF6 is the first fighting game I've put more than 100 hours into. That alone tells you how good it is. MK1 was pretty hype but I ended up kind of regretting buying it because I'm not really into the kameo system. Definitely agree with the SF6 decision.

MK1 can't even lace the boots of SF6 from a quality and content standpoint. It shouldn't even be a legitimate contender but for lack of other big budget competition.

I love street fighter 6 because it lets me be a gremlin on ladder. I love the amount of freedom that this game gives me to just play the way i want and im having so much fun :)

as someone who loves Mortal Kombat, i have to say i've been enjoying Street Fighter 6 a whole lot more, and i've also been enjoying the updates to Killer Instinct over the holidays. MK's fun, but it feels very cynical at the moment, and is missing a lot of things i loved in the previous ones, while Street Fighter 6 fixed all the issues i had with SFV, feels like a breath of fresh air.

Granblue is my fighting game of the year. SF6 and MK1 are much more relevant. However, the fun I'm having playing the game, and finally having a character in Siegfried, GBVSR takes my vote. But if we're talking a real awards, SF6 takes it. SF6 is great, but I don't have a character, and won't for a while. MK1 gave me Reptile back, and was fun, but I cool off NRS games quick. Will likely come back to it in the future.

Im in that same kind of limbo state when it comes to waiting for a character for both MK1 and SF6. When SF6 dropped, i had a decent time with Guile at the start. But the character im really waiting for is Ed. And for MK1, ive been playing Smoke and SubZero for now. But im 100% going to drop them for Ermac regardless of his gameplay simply because hes my favorite MK character of all time

I’m not so sure Street Fighter 6 was delayed in the manner Max is saying. Like, it was delayed because of COVID like all of Capcom’s games were. The 2020 leak list had it as a 2022 release, but then that had RE4, Dragon’s Dogma 2 (which hasn’t even come out yet), and Exoprimal as 2022 releases too. But the leaked character art that came out ahead of Street Fighter 6 coming out actually makes me wonder if they release Street Fighter 6 early so it wouldn’t slip another year, and the characters we’re getting as DLC now (that were pictured with the rest of the cast) were originally intended to be part of the release version of the game.

Ty for getting me into street fighter, this year Ive been getting into it a lot with the 30th anniversary collection and then eventually SF6 I love it so much, so much good and a lot they thought about, loving and practicing with characters, so much hype. Mk1 has been a lot of fun too, really like the characters in the roster and the story is definitely one of my favourites in the series. Been really getting into guilty gear strive recently and it’s definitely become one of my favourites, the animation and music and gameplay I all love. 👊🐉🔥

Even though this video was mostly about SF6 and MK1, I gotta say I'm so happy to see Max enjoying Versus as a Granblue fan, it gives me joy. As someone who watches more than plays, I gotta say SF6 was WAYS more interesting to watch than MK1. Which is curious because when I think about SF5 and MK11, it was the opposite for me. So that by itself says a lot. If a game is great to play and ALSO great to watch, it's special. Great content as usual.

Both SF6 & MK1 were awesome & will only get better over time, Tekken 8 from the demo looks amazing too can’t wait til that comes out. We still got Fatal Fury to come down the track plus I’m sure more many other fighters, This is an amazing time to be a fighting game fan!!

I have such plans for sf6 to access one day all the characters for a komplete edition but so excited for t8 now mostly and mk 1 looking forward from the nrs devs to continue enhance more package content such as new game modes and plenty of dlc characters to try out. there is crossplay and maybe a story expansion where they linger the lord havik story as the aftermath protagonist. It would be a flabbergasted move if nrs decides to pull onaga from the curtain. what did i like for sf6, since it was my first experience as a sf fan was that for newcomers such as myself capcom gave us the opportunity to try out the modern controls scheme so it would be easy to strive combos and specials and cancel hits. The most formidable reward in sf6 to me was the perfect parry move. ill continue to explore akuma and ed in world tour but like i said t8 and mk1 i have planned for 2024 happy new year max for 2024 once more and thanks for your content.

Die hard MK fan here, and I totally agree with you. SF6 really hit the spot. MK seemed rushed, and the number of development issues in the game really dampened its immediate impact for me. Still love MK1 better, but we gotta appreciate SF6

man I knew I wasn't going crazy

It goes to SF6 for me easily. Because of what it represents. I have felt for awhile that the fighting game sphere has been accepting their flaws as just the nature of the beast. So many things were just accepted. "Fighting game singleplayers will always have bad gameplay." "Fighting games are only for Fighting gamers." But SF6 challenged that and put their money where their mouth is. They made a game that everyone likes. They explored a singleplayer that is not just cutscenes and fights. This game proved that the fighting game design space is not fully explored and that there is still more room for this genre to grow. I may find MK1 a more fun game. But to me, SF6 is an evolution of the genre, proof that there is more that can be done. And that beats out every other fighting game this year for me. Even if I don't play it as much as others.

I'm surprised there wasn't more consideration for Granblue, with it having a lot of content, great gameplay, eye-melting art style, and seemingly being a game Max enjoys a decent amount. Seems a shame it's relegated to the status of a notable also-ran, and only MK and SF get serious consideration (although they absolutely do deserve it.)

SF6 & Idol Showdown are my picks for my favourite fighters over the year. They clicked the best for me personally, so yeah, it makes sense haha. Tho I'm assuming a game coming out later this month may suck me into a deep abyss, as did the 7th game of the mainline games 😅

SF6 was an easy top place for me, but I've been sinking an ungodly amount hours into Granblue. I loved the first one but it was lacking a lot of modern features and QoL aspects, but man the sequel really stepped its game up. I really find it hard to pull myself away from the controller, "Just one more match".
