While I am researching other companies I thought I would explain a bit about my own company background even though I quit running the business some years ago. I do not even remember when.
I just realized I said I set up my Max's Models business on KZfaq...I meant I got it listed on Yahoo which was the big search engine before Google.

When I was over in the Philippines, I used to shop a lot at the many Lil's hobby shops around Manila and Makati. Kits from Tamiya, Hobbyboss, and Academy etc., were ridiculously low priced (no USA tarrifs) and Uncle Sugar's money went a very long way back then. I brought a couple hundred dollars worth of kits home when I headed back to the real world and it was almost enough to fill my closet with.

I’m all EARS. I REALLY REALLY LIKE YOUR SITE. The explanation about the T-shirts was fine, ( I was hoping. ) your site and the comments from all the other modelers is my only connection to the hobby. You do a lot of work to make this happen. Some day it will go away. Please don’t give up on us. But you come FIRST. I don’t mind watching re- runs. Do what works for you . To all the other modelers thanks for sharing your experiences. MAXMODELS IS THE GLUE THAT HOLDS US TOGETHER. I’ve been using TAMIYA GLUE MYSELF. Does anyone remember the lemon scented no-tox glue from the early 70s. 🍋🍋🍋 it didn’t work. I NEED MORE ( cowbell ) MAXMODELS

The trick to T shirts is to have someone make them and then sell them yourself, huge difference in profit margin. We did this several times at the hobby shop I worked at. We also produced resin models, start up costs are much less. My best personal project was bases for Battletech figures. I could make twenty in two minutes and I sold thousands of them- wore out the original molds!

Yes, it is usually far more profitable to make the "add-on" accessories for existing models! So, if someone wanted to build a 48th scale Jamaican Spitfire Mk8.25 flown on April 31, 1946, they'd have the ability to do so. I know I was a bit over board there, but you can get the gist of my meaning. Most people don't have the knack to scratch build modifications (why I like scifi and small scale armour/ships - at that scale, who can really tell). They'd rather buy it and attach it.

The "I'm the Captain" was fun. I respect the courage of the entire cockpit crew as I have a fear of heights.Cruising at altitude is just fine. It's those takeoffs that enable my grip for life on my armrests until we level off. I especially don't like a sharp bank in any direction during take off. Makes me feel that the fuselage is going to separate from the wing and do a nose plant. my father was a sea plane pilot. Amazing ! Hats off to you as well. They ought to have given you more money.

I love the history of the menu different manufacturers that I remember building or playing with as a kid. I recently came across a Trumpeter HH65 that I don’t even know where I got it from. I haven’t built model kits in years and will probably just sell the various kits I have roaming around. Sounds like the hip is doing well. Just takes a little time.

Max, first off, glad to see you are doing well and that you are staying safe! This is one awesome vid, and a really cool story of your background and how you came to be where you at today. Keep staying safe and I'm sure you will be good to go once the rehab is complete. You know, your voice reminds me of the voice of one of those back in the 50/60's animal or nature type shows from Mutual of Omaha and the old National Geographics. Anyway, keep up the great work and the song was pretty cool at the end!

Just returned to Moscow from my country house and found this great video. Thanks Max! For me this story is especially fascinating because I also started my modeling business with a friend of mine living in Ukraine in 1998. We produced limited (VE-EERY limited) run injection kits in 1/144 scale under OKB-144 brandname. The Tu-104A was our first kit. www.scalemates.com/kits/okb-144-101-tupolev-tu-104a--1025672 (just found that Scalemates don’t have box scans of our two most popular kits - Yak-40 and Tu-154B. I’ll try to scan the boxes for them). The venture was totally unsuccessful and lived for just about 5 years. But… those were the days.

Max, Your candor, enthusiasm and knowledge are such a lift, especially in these stressful times. Your company histories bring back great memories of my childhood and youth building model s in the sixties. Glad to hear your recovery is going well. Stay safe. Ps. I loved your Aurora history in particular because I had almost the entire collection of the 1/48 WWI planes. Not the most complex models, but just perfect for a 10 to 12-year-old kid with modest kit building skills and a love of the Knights of the Air. How I wish I still had those planes.

I've learned a lot about kit companies that I haven't even heard of before. Also, and this just between us, you got me back into model building (after about two decades of dark ages)! It was one of your videos, either the one about Zvezda or the one about model building in the Eastern Bloc, that somehow found its way into my KZfaq recommendations. How nice that you share with us your modelling history. And I am very excited that finally after more than 60 years, someone besides Minicraft is thinking of providing us, plastic modelers, general aviation and private aircraft, As you can see on my icon here on KZfaq showing my all time favorite plastic model: the beautiful Monogram Piper Tri-Pacer. This plus the same company's Cessna 180 are perhaps the finest private and sport aircraft made as plastic scale models. So sorry Monogram didn't produce others like the Luscombe Silvaie, Sedan and so many others that need plastic reproduction hopefully in 1/32 or even 1/24 scale because these aircraft are always small. Keep up the good work, Max.

Hey Max, Enjoy the vids. Keep on keeping on. I was really impressed with the Midway Series. I hadn't made the connection until you mentioned it in passing about some unbuilt ''Kate'' models you finally got around to doing. Anyway ''Midway'' was quite professional, you came off sounding like Edward R Morrow. I forwarded it to a couple of my former Marine Air Wing buddies. Some of those same squadron numbers we served with in the Seventies. VMSBs became VMAs [''attack'' not ''scout-bombing''] by then.

Yeah, VT-8 is now a training squadron due to nomenclature changes. Bravery dripped out of the sky in that battle along with a lot of blood. We don't call them the greatest generation for nothing.

@@maxsmodels I met a few WWII Aviators. Some were friends of my Dad. Julian Acres was assigned to VMF-211 but still in Pearl waiting on a hop to Wake on 7DEC41. He was reassigned and flew at Midway. Shot down, he bobbed in a raft until friendlies picked him up later. Jack Long had been a Guard on Knute Rockne's ball club at Notre Dame. Right after they beat Navy, Marine Recruiters in Dress Blues were in the locker room pitching the aviator program. He flew SBDs off Cactus. He was my Confirmation sponsor in the early '60s, still in the Marine Reserve. Later he was a professor at Loyola Chicago. William Kelley, father of my Marine buddy Sgt Bill Kelley, flew SB2Cs in the Pacific. Don MacKenna had been my Dad's roommate at U Wisconsin. Don went to Canada to join the RCAF in '39. [My Dad joined the Illinois National Guard Field Artillery about the same time]. MacKenna flew Spits and Hurricanes in the Battle of Britain with the Eagle Squadron. He also trained Polish fighter pilots. He got transferred to the USAAF, later. John Kavonda flew transports, C-47s, C-46s over the Hump in the CBI. He stayed in the USAF Reserve into the late '50s. John's later wife, Anita, had been my Mom's roommate at Northwestern. [Anita was a looker -- one can only imagine the nose art.] My college theatrical lighting instructor at the U of AZ , Gene Lafferty, had been a flight engineer in B-17s with the 8th AF in the UK, then transitioning to B-24s in India later. The flight engineer usually got to man the twin-fifty blister behind the cockpit -- besides monitoring the 4 engines, electrical and hydraulics systems inflight. We was from W VA, and much like Gen Yeager in looks and attitude. I was priveleged to know such fine people.

@@maxsmodels I met George Gay several times at air shows in the eighties. He loved to talk about that fateful day in June '42 and seemed to remember the names of all the lost aircrew in the squadron. He usually had a table or booth to sell his book. Saburō Sakai would often be there too selling his book. Needless to say, they didn't talk. Sakai didn't speak English well. He had caucasian wife who acted as translator. She was also very knowledgable. In one of those small whorld things, Gay had flown with one of my uncle's best friends at TWA, especially so since my uncle was a United pilot.

I am happy everything is going great with your hip. I hope all the pain will be gone. Still have a nasty scar from my posterior replacement, but both hips joints feel great. Got back into yoga the last two months. Took me ten years to get back to it. Like you, I have a passion for flight, and at 64, still hope to get my license someday. Do you teach? Look forward to your next post. Maybe I will start building the commercial airliners I grew up with. Boeing 727, Caravelle, Convair 880, Focker F-27, DC-8... Take care, Max.

Great videos. Wishing you a good speedy recovery from your surgery. Would you ever consider a Ed Roth model kit video. About Addar model company only their airplanes were ex-Aurora. A big majority of there kits were their own original molds, such as Planet of the Apes, Evel Knievel, and Jaws. Keep up the good work and if you any help on any subject please let me know.
