Max von Pauer (1866-1948) was a german pianist and music pedagogue.
Pauer was born in London in 1866 as the son of pianist Ernst Pauer and his wife Ernestine Pauer, née Andreae. He studied piano with his father at the Royal Academy of Music until 1885, along with Eugen d'Albert, and from 1885 studied composition with Vincenz Lachner at the Grand Ducal Conservatory in Karlsruhe. From 1887 to 1897, he taught at the Cologne Conservatory, and from 1897 to 1924 at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Stuttgart. In 1908, he became the director of the institution, succeeding Samuel de Lange, and was ennobled by King Wilhelm II of Württemberg for his services. In 1920, he transformed the conservatory into a modern music academy. From 1924 to 1932, he directed the State Conservatory of Music in Leipzig. From 1933 to 1934, he was the director of the municipal Music Academy in Mannheim.
In the spring of 1917, amidst the First World War, he undertook a tour of Germany with violinist Melanie Michaelis, including stops in Berlin and Freiberg. He was an internationally renowned pianist who placed great emphasis on fidelity to the works, and like his father, published numerous works in arrangements.
