Chop and drop of support species in a food forest garden really helps to give back nutrients and improve the soil with organic matter. I like to use comfrey, tithonia diversifolia, bana grass, cardoon and tic beans as a few examples.

Hi, I'm Kalem, and this channel features all sorts of unusual and exotic fruiting plants with tips of how to successfully grow them. I'm interested in all things gardening and love growing my own food and all types of edible plants.
I live on a 2 acre piece of land in New Zealand where we are turning a grass paddock into and abundant, edible paradise and food forest! So come along on this journey with me as I experiment with growing, and try to push the limits of what I can grow. I'll share with you my successes and failures so hopefully you'll learn from them and have a go yourself! Come learn with me and Subscribe to join this awesome community :)

I was helping a house plant grower sell at a market fair over 10 years ago, Kath Irvine of Eatable Back Yard was holding seminars next to us. I learnt that day how buying mulch is really silly.

The logic is absurd, drive your green waste that you know the origin of, pay for the travel and council fees. Then probably drive somewhere else to buy mulch that you have no idea what is in it! Like how much 2,4,5-T still ends up in garden waste made into mulch in Taranaki.

Are they called "support species" specifically because this is their primary purpose, or is this secondary to overall general biodiversity (or something else)?

Yes. Ideally, every plant you grow will have multiple uses. Support plants are usually not great food plants, but they still perform valuable functions such as mulching shown here, nitrogen fixation, shelter, slope stabilization, water filtration, etc.

Question What is the name of that plant that you were cutting and laying back on the ground for nutrients? Thank you for sharing looking forward to your reply.

NZ is a temperate zone. Can get some subtropicals to grow, but you’d need a glass house for coconuts.
