Thanks for the video. I wish I had a source of clean wheat straw like that. Grazon is the chemical that is sprayed on hay to kill broadleaf weeds. It will pass through cows and horses and stay in their manure. It cannot be neutralized by composting and will kill vegetables even after passing through livestock and being composted, so it’s important to know the source of your hay and manure. Looking forward to seeing your seed starting soil mix and maybe your whole process of seed starting. God bless!

I foolishly planted a bunch of wheat a few years ago. So the most important part to me is to compost or leave the straw out for 6 months or so. I do have 8 bails I didn’t use and they have been sitting for years, probably perfect to use now!

I've been binge watching your channel. Enjoyed it very much. As far as herbicides,be wary of manure as well. I had some horse manure given to me that wound up being laced with Grazon. Had to dig out almost a yard of raised bed soil.

I'm really enjoying your videos. If you watch many youtube gardening videos youll hear the people say, "I am trying this for the first time...". But you can tell yours are from years of experience. Please keep them coming! I have experienxed both the herbicides from hay as well as the new weed seeds hay introduced to my garden beds. I used to cover crop with buckwheat because it winter kills, howver you better mow it before it goes to seed. And it goes to seed faster than you would think, so to me it just causes too much extra work for the benefits. I agree with you that if your garden beds are well established with lots of humus already mulching in the winter is just as good as a cover crop, unless the goal is to add nitrogen to your soil which some cover crops do.

Thanks this is very informative, keep it up:). No-till growers has some great videos on cover cropping. You would likely have to trim them at soil surface and cover with solarization sheet for a few days to or a silage tarp for weeks to terminate the crop. I think your system works very well for you, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Happy gardening

What do you think of using wood chip animal bedding for mulch? We don’t have room to leave straw in a pile to break down. And we’ve had terrible sproutage from the straw.

Always was confused about cover crops. We spend so much time and money on adding nutrients to the soil, then plant a cover crop to steal it away, so we need to amend again!!??

We can learn much from nature.... Fall leaves, dead plant matter covering and protecting the soil for the winter. It works. Blessings!

If you never till your soil, how do you keep it so weed free all year ?

We keep the soil covered with mulch. It's much harder for the weeds to germinate and grow well if there is a thick layer of mulch. Where mulch is not applied, we hoe every so often - just a quick easy pass over the tiny weeds is all it takes.

Chris, since we don't till we're not continually turning up dormant weed seeds,with no-till you have much less weeding to do plus with drip we're just watering a strip and all the rest of the bed is kept dry so weed seeds have a harder time germinating! The most important aspect of keeping it weed free is to hoe when weeds are very small and of course don't dare let any weed go too seed!
