I love the music of Wim Mertens since the eighties, when I discovered him. His album Maximizing the Audience was heart and soul striking. Since then I bought nearly every cd, and there are a lot. He is my lifetime composer and musician on top of every body, and there are a lot... THE composer of our times.. His music supported me in all sorts of times, difficult and happy....

I subscribe to each of your words, the music of Wim Mertens is part of my life. Since I heard him on the Radio 3 program "Dialogos" back in 1980, not a day has passed without listening to him, he gives me peace and harmony. Thank you Ramon Trecet, thank you Wim

Mertens was discovered by Ramon Trecet in Spain when nobody knew what was minimalism. A lot of years have passed since then, but the music still sounds into my mind like an endless echo. Thank you mr. Mertens.

Espectacular! Una obra de referencia de Wim Mertens y del minimalismo. Es una alegría comprobar que hay muchísima gente que aprecia su música y que con los años se ha convertido en un clásico. La pude oir también en Spook (Valencia) antes de que bautizaran algunos indocumentados ese fenómeno musical y cultural (Puzzle, Barraca, Chocolate...) como 'la ruta del bakalao'. Años después, lo vi en el Teatro Olympia y me perdí, diosssss!, el concierto que ofreció recientemente en el Palau de les Arts de Valencia por sus 40 años de trayectoria musical. Un crack!!!

Un genio contemporáneo. Lo he visto muchas veces en concierto pero recuerdo una vez donde hizo 15 bis. No le dejábamos irse del teatro, esto fue en el año 87 en Valencia

Yeah, the 'great' thing that was happening was that one of the girls from the choir missed her cue (2:03) and then another one laughed (2:11). You can hear her breath from her microphone. Then it throws off 2 of the other girls which did not go unnoticed from the bass player (2:26) and others from the orchestra. (As professionals they are much more likely to notice any flaws than the audience but as viewers on KZfaq where we can replay, I think it makes this piece more enjoyable.) I could only guess their thoughts from the reactions on their faces. In the middle it seems like they are all trying extra hard not to make anymore mistakes as the choir simultaneously flip their pages in concentration (5:30) and Wim smiles in approval (5:43). At the end it appears that everyone is doubtful until they get a deserving applause of approval. Notice how the female violinist appears to break into a laugh of relief (8:56) and then gestures, "hey, I'll take that!" (8:57). Before that (3:24), she looks behind her at the choir, sort of saying, "you wait, you're going to answer to me; so get your s--t together!" Agree? Does anyone else care to add to my observations (because I see other things)?

@@dkyrtata6688 Good observation. I thought the bass player was looking back as if being called by the girls. He does this a number of times. Probably a joke that stuck from the repetitions.

@@gleff3345, It never occurred to me that there may be some communication going on between the girls and the bass player. Just to add a bit of humour, these are the thoughts that may be going through their minds based on their body language and facial expressions: at 0:13, 0:54, 1:10. 1:22: "With every ounce of passion in my blood, I am going to give the most outstanding performance that anyone has ever seen!" at 1:30, 1:45: "No sweat ... Easy!" at 0:31: "Hurry up. let's get to me..." (first chorist as she scratches her head) at 1:35: "Are you ready to change the spotlight?" (second chorist to third) at 2:03 "Oops, think anyone noticed?" (second chorist) at 2:07: ":Oh yeah ... big time." (third chorist to second) at 2:22: "Dare you to do the same" (second chorist to first) at 2:22;: "Sure, when I'm ready" (first chorist to second) at 2:24: "It's all good, ladies. Go ahead and steal the show. Wim won't notice; he's in another world (3:03, 4:14). Go nuts!" at 2:29: "What the heck are they up to now? They just don't get it. This is not a rehearsal; we're live for heaven's sake!" at 3:24, 3:41, 7:16: "Hey, don't think I can't see you back there. I'm watching you!. So get your s--t together!" at 2:39: "Don't look at me; blame those s--t disturbers at the other end. I am doing my best to make everyone shine... In spite my morning sickness, I rushed here at a moment's notice; still in my pyjama bottom for that matter." (5:30) at 3:08, 3:50, 5:14, 6:05: "I hope we don't get fired. I have years of mortgage payments to make still. Just need to focus and concentrate..." at 3:45, 3:59, 5:47, 8:54: "It's even worse for me. With no job, I can get deported ... Damn choirs! What's with them?" at 4:10, 4:21, 8:51. "I have nothing to worry about. I am the only bass player. And they can't deport me; I'm born here. And I have no mortgage or any other responsibilities. Life is great! Maybe I'll even get l--d tonight!" at 2:58, 4:26: "No worries everyone. I am going to save the show. Just watch me! The focus is all on me now. When I am finished, all the clowning around back there will be forgotten." at 5:43, 6:23: "Okay guys, we're rolling now. Stay focused; concentrate. Don't mess it up... My big moment to sing is coming up!" at 6:48: "Hey, he changed the lyrics. He's cussing at us!" (the chorus) at 7:18: "Oh yeah, let'em have it!" at 6:49: "We're sorry ... we'll behave ... Forgive us ... we'll behave ... We're so sorry... " (the chorus) at 8:27: "Is the boss happy? I will know in a moment if I can make this month's mortgage payment." at 8:55: "Unbelievable! I think we hit the ball out of the park ... I'll take that." (8:57) At 9:02: "I am too gorgeous and talented for anyone to remember the gaffes. He cherry-picked me to showcase my handiwork. Just watch me shine in our duette!"

@@dkyrtata6688 Which singer is off cue, because I don't hear it. I always thought they found it funny to sing 'Richard Wagner, Wagner Richard' and that's the reason why they smiled. Of course, there must be more to it, because the bass player turned around twice.

Il y en a qui ne peuvent exprimer leurs sentiments et il faut reconnaitre que les games de vibration son hautes . J'utilise le casque et à font la gomme , une énergie qui game le cerveau à 2 voir 3 mille . Merci !

Yo conocí a WIM MERTENS, junto a otros muchos músicos diferenciales y geniales, hace muchos años, en aquel fantástico programa ( "DIALOGOS 3 DE RNE" ) que conducía el admirado y malogrado RAMON TRECET. Este tema "MAXIMIZING THE AUDIENCE" está incluido en un doble LP de vinilo, y le da título a dicha grabación. Se grabó en 1984 en Venecia y se publicó en 1985. Contiene cuatro temas más : "CIRCLES", "LIR", "THE FOSSE" y "WHISPER ME". Guardo estos vinilos como un tesoro, porque la música de MERTENS es tan original y tan hermosa que me sacude mis emociones de una manera especial. Estamos ante un músico genial.

Descubrir este sonido modifica en parte tu concepto musical, vengas de donde vengas (musicalmente), te has de parar y oír estas melodías, Maximizing the Audience, la base, Lir la concepción. Absolutamente magistral. Todo el producto es una obra maestra. Sin fallos. Hoy Wim sigue en la brecha. Bravo maestro.

El compositor belga Wim Mertens cambio el concepto de la música contemporánea allá por los años 80, junto a otros músicos como Philip Glass, Shadowfax, William Ackerman, Mark Isham, George Winston, Michael Nyman o tantos otros, un torrente musical que pasó a etiquetarse como new age. La mayoría procedían del continente americano. A pesar de su voz extremadamente aguda, para muchos desagradable, Wim Mertens fue fichado por el sello Windham Hill, entonces toda una referencia del género y logró una destacada notoriedad gracias a discos como "Maximizing the Audience", que fue compuesta para la obra de Jan Fabre "The Power of Theatrical Madness", estrenada en 1984 en Venecia o la música para la película de Peter Greenaway "The Belly of an Architect" 1987. Su música se puede considerar minimalista, aunque algunos prefieren calificarla de música ambiental o el avant-garde. El músico belga comenzará su gira de este año, el próximo 23 de febrero, con el concierto que ofrecerá en Soreasu Antzokia de Azpeitia (Gipuzkoa). En esta cita estará acompañado, como en anteriores ocasiones, por el escritor vasco Kirmen Uribe. Uribe escribió la novela "Mussche" (traducida al castellano como "Lo que mueve el mundo") inspirándose en la historia real del escritor belga Robert Mussche, que en mayo de 1937 acogió a una niña vasca de la guerra en su casa de Gante. Conocer a la niña hizo que cambiara como persona y se involucrará cada vez más en la defensa de los derechos humanos. En este espectáculo, "la misma fuerza que unió a Robert Mussche y a la niña Karmentxu, junta ahora en un mismo proyecto al compositor belga Wim Mertens y al escritor vasco Kirmen Uribe", destaca la promotora de la actuación. Mertens interpretará piezas musicales inspiradas en la novela de Kirmen Uribe, además de una selección de su amplio repertorio. El escritor de Ondarroa, por su parte, recitará fragmentos de la novela, además de algún poema inédito. Se trata del primer concierto de un Tour que llevará a Mertens a otras seis ciudades este año. Entre ellas, Elche (24 de febrero) o Alcalá de Henares (25 de febrero), donde presentará los grandes temas de su trilogía 'Cran aux oeufs' este domingo, a las 18 horas, en el Teatro Salón Cervantes, un acto para el que ya están agotadas las entradas. Según ha informado el Ayuntamiento de Alcalá en un comunicado, el compositor y director belga ofrecerá un concierto en piano solo y voz, centrándose principalmente en la segunda parte del disco, 'What Are We, Locks, To Do?'. Mertens incluirá también algunos temas de las otras dos partes de su disco: 'Charaktersketch' y 'Dust of Truths'. I remember myself being in the tattoe salon in Czech Republic about 7 years ago, close to Pardubice and this tattoe lad was playing it while my mate was getting inked. Fell in love with it immediately. What a piece of art.

Escuché por primera vez este tema en casa de unos amigos en Madrid allá por el año 93... ¡9 años después de que se publicara el álbum! y fue la revolución, quise descubrir más y más de este compositor y desde entonces hasta hoy no he perdido la pista dejándome sorprender con cada nuevo lanzamiento (unas veces más positivamente que otras). Es cierto que esta composición para mi gusto pierde algo de fuerza en este vídeo, en comparación con aquella primera escalofriante escucha en un equipo hi-fi y disco de vinilo, pero no deja de ser emocionante verlos actuar, por suerte he tenido la suerte de disfrutar tres veces a Wim Mertens en directo y desde luego, no dudaré en acudir de nuevo en cuanto se presente la oportunidad.

Win Mertens, a quien tuve la oportunidad de ver en directo, ya conociendo antes su música...es estremecedor...me encanta es minimialismo de notas, enriquecido por los coros. Y eso que esta versión, live, es menos dramática que la del disco... Es como un geiser de energía y pasionalidad...y al a vez delicadeza y armonía....ENTUSIASMANTE. FANTASTICA
