In video two of this Maximus tutorial in FL Studio 21, we talk about one of the most important aspects of Maximus, and that is the compression graph. Maximus doesn't come with Ratio or Threshold knobs, but rather the compression graph is used for much more precise editing.
In the compression graph we can dial in Compression, Limiting, Gating, and Expansion. We go over how that is done, as well as utilizing the presets in Maximus to select standardized compressions ratios like 2:1, 4:1, 8:1 and so on.
Give the video a thumbs up if you enjoyed it and subscribe for future content!

Great tutorial really answered my question on how to figure out the ratios using the graph. Also i had no clue it had that preset graph menu. Thank you. By the way, wny link to the song you used in the video? Its awesome

Hey Jon! Thank you for this great explanation! I really couldn't understand that graph section. I want to work with maximus and master my songs. But it's a little uncomfortable for me. I'll finish your course and see what can I do with this NICE plugin!

That stereo separation knob seems cool. Seems like could use Maximus as a stereo widener plug-in for certain situations, on a mixer insert for an instrument
@jonaudio
@jonaudio Жыл бұрын
You can absolutely do that! Just made sure to watch out for any phase issues if you push the knob too far.

@@jonaudio cool, will use that feature on some songs Seems like would want to widen out the top end more than mid or low Also have heard advice to double track with slight differences in takes and pan those out left and right to widen a mix. Am assuming would work with either real or virtual instruments as long as slight differences Putting something in the center of mix just gives exact replicas of sound on L and R from my understanding. Not quite sure why slightly different versions of same sounds panned out would create width

What you're referring to is called doubling. It's a very very useful recording technique. Let's say for example you are recording a guitarist, instead of him just playing the guitar part one time. It will sound wider and much much better if we recorded the same part twice and you panned those left and right. It gives jt a wide and fat sound because it is true stereo, whereas the left speaker and right speaker are playing two different signals, but they are playing the same thing. It also simulates how a concert would be if there are two guitarists on either side of the stage playing the same notes. The small differences in timing, pitch and phase play style really bring the mix to life. You can also quad guitars, meaning you record the parts four different times, and put two of them to the left and two to the right. Keep in mind though, the more you double, you will get a thicker sound but at the expense of definition. This technique is used heavily for vocals as well, which you could call stacking vocals. You will get a huge and thick sounding vocal if you record the same part a few times, then edit all the takes to make the timing correct. This method will only work for true doubles, that is, literally playing/recording the same part over itself. It won't work if you just copy the same recording and pan those out. That will only result in an increase of volume, because the frequencies and phase are the exact same, in that case you would just be adding them together, making them louder.

@@jonaudio interesting. I guess a mix sounding wide is giving the illusion that the sounds are coming from different directions. The analogy of an orchestra makes sense. Still don’t know too much about phase, will have to look into more. Based on your explanation it sounds like when you double tracks, they have different phases, and that contributes to sense of width

can stereo separation can be used as a mid side EQ on the track, so that I can let the vocals to punch through by "separating the mid"? also, can you talk more about the ratio? is there any preset use cases in ratio in terms of mixing or mastering
@jonaudio
@jonaudio Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't think of it in the sense of a mid side eq, but more so how you would stage the different frequency bands in your mix. So typically things like, Kick and Bass are going to be panned in the center. So this is kind of like panning things in the center, but doing so with a frequency band. For vocals I'd leave the EQing portion as its own step in the process, perhaps a pre and post EQ on your channel strip. A good way to have vocals punch through the mix is switching the compressor from Peak to RMS on the midband and dial in the compressor from there. As far a ratio goes, a good way to understand it is this, if the compressor is set to 8:1, an increase in level of 8dB, past the threshold will result in 1dB of gain increase at the output. Hopefully that help!

i've noticed the curve acts exactly like waveshaper. Using it as a exaggeration creates "dynamic" on the beat but introduces distortion, am i correct?
@jonaudio
@jonaudio Жыл бұрын
The curve can introduce distortion if the expansion is too much. You can also create distortion by setting the release time to a quick value. What's happening there is the compressor is releasing so fast that it literally distorts the waveform. This can be a cool effect if done intentionally, But if we just make the expansion curve too high, this will cause expansion to overload the band output.
