is there a visual difference between using a 3d camera to zoom vs scaling the position using the Z arrow after making the layer 3d?

Its much easier with the camera because you're still zooming into a 2D layer. We only move the z position with the zoom through so that there's a bit of space between the layers to make it look like we're actually moving through the first layer and into the 2nd

yes it should be working in the newest version of blender. I just updated and it was working. I'll have page for patch notes with next d3d update end of month
