Houston rapper Maxo Kream sat down with VladTV to speak about growing up in Texas and how his life changed after his Nigerian-born father was arrested. Maxo explained that he lived an idyllic life until his father was arrested, leading Maxo to sell drugs and run in the streets.
Moving along, Maxo spoke about Houston adopting L.A. gangs like the 52 Hoover Gangster Crips, which you can hear more about above.

Houston is about hustling and being playa. Drugs are big in Houston. Nice cars are big in Houston. But there's no real gang culture in Houston. You can tell by our music. Houston rappers weren't on a lot of real violent shit like Memphis or New Orleans. Everything wasn't about bussing your head or locking you in the trunk. It's about candy paint, hustling, pulling hoes, sipping barre, smoking sweets etc. If you get killed in Houston it's probably because you're getting robbed, retaliation for robbing someone, somebody was high on wet and you were in the wrong place at the wrong time and got murdered...shit like that. There's no real gang hanging in Houston though.

I remember going to shop with this dude & roommate across the street from where I stayed off campus . He was showing & telling his roommate about his brother , & how this was the very first video they shot . Visual quality wasn't all that great , but dude in the video rapping was spittn some fire .. Come to find out it was Maxo little twin brother . I say twin cause he look like a young Maxo . We wasn't coo like that , but that was back in 2011/12 . LA and Chicago gang members didn't just randomly pop up Southern cities trying to set up shop. Family connections often opened the doors. People forget that most Black Americans in Western and Northern cities have family and strong connections down South. So it makes sense that there will be influence on both sides. It would be great if that influence was positive though. We don't need to be exporting gang culture to other cities.
