Black Owl Outdoors

Күн бұрын

Krik of Black Owl Outdoors reviews the Maxpedition Sitka Gearslinger. The Sitka Gearslinger, as the name implies, is a sling bag designed to be worn over one shoulder. All of the expected consistencies with Maxpedition are present in the Sitka; the 1000 Denier nylon material; the consistent and durable stitching; as well as thoughtful design and usability. The general consensus at Black Owl Outdoors is that we wish we liked the Maxpedition Sitka more than we do. When you start to add weight to the bag it becomes uncomfortable to carry and tires your shoulder incredible fast. While we think it is more of a style preference than it is a criticism on the Sitka itself, we thought we should share our findings. So if you like sling bags, and want one that is durable and reliable, the Maxpedition Sitka Gearslinger may be for you.

To preface, Im a security officer at a high security facility and we all have personal packs that we basically live out of for 12 hour shifts. Ive had the Monsoon pack for a few years, and for the most part I like it but Im giving this a go since it feels like time to switch it up a bit. My only gripe about the Monsoon is the goofy shape makes it a bit tricky to pack about 90 percent of the time which was tolerable. Hopefully this one negates that. I do like that Maxpedition is very thoughtful about these things, although I do usually take a knife to some stuff when I get one (I do that to boot linings too. Weird habit I guess). Some of the straps and tags and rotary girders are just a bit overkill. And for anyone thats wondering, it just makes sense to take these damn things off to access them. Sling packs honestly arent super high speed to use while moving - which realistically is fine for most of mankind, pipe dreams excluded. One big tip is to buy electrical tape, roll up the excess straps, and tape the excess into a roll. Im sure theres videos that depict it better, but it cleans stuff up alot. Sling bags do help when wearing rifles and ammo pouches IMO, because you can unbuckle the pack and flop it off easier, which is why I default to them. Regular packs make me feel claustrophobic with all the horsesh- we wear.

Howdy.I happen to have this bag and love it.Use it for fly fishing all the time.It was uncomfortable at first.but I rigged up a 1.5" waist belt .This make all the difference in the world. There's already a hole on the left side,I make a slit on the right side and ran a belt thru.Put a couple of squeeze rivets each side.Works good. Also cut stitches at bottom of water bottle holder to slide in my fly rod case. When not hauling the case it still holds a nalgene bottle securely.Good vid keep it up.tks

wow thank you so so much for pointing out your issue with the weight distribution problem. i am skeptical too about how the sitka can support weights like laptops on just a single strap. this video has really addressed my issue. many thanks !

I just want to caution that depending on how much weight you plan on carrying, the bag can be very uncomfortable if worn for extended periods of time. Granted, wearing any type of bag for extended periods of time will cause some sort of fatigue, but this sling bag causes discomfort pretty quick. And if you saw from the video, I didn't have too much in the bag. Any more weight and it wouldn't have been tolerable. -Krik

I agree on the weight issue. I carried the sitka on a 6 mile hike and my shoulder was killing me. Did not have that much weight in it either.Sold it on ebay the next week. I now use the monsoon , it carries very well and can take more weight with less fatigue. I am giving up the pockets but thats ok. I have a med kit and a pocket maxpedition for other stuff. I am thinking of adding a Janus to the side of the monsoon.

I had it once it's okay, I would say is more for traveling or sight seeing while your on vacation or morning jogs that you don't need a fanny pack that you put your wallet, house keys, snacks, your cell phone, eye glasses, your hat, a towel, a light jacket or your headphones.

I had it, it's a good sling back, but for me it was made more for light carrying items, spring and summer use or an emergency use like place it in car 😊

I have the same. Good enough for very short trips. You can't put comfortably much incide because of the bad incide organization. And you can't carry more than 5kg weight in it because of the sling construction. It's ideal for lightweight urban EDC kit.

You do a fine job reviewing the bag, but it is a "sling" type bag and not a backpack. Your complaint about the bag not having a waist belt etc. is because the bag is not designed to carry a lot of weight. I would not review a Corvette and complain that it can't pull my camper or run in the mud.

Yes, I understand it's a sling bag. And that it's not comfortable when carrying a lot of weigh. But I don't understand why you'd make a bag that's large enough to carry a decent amount of gear, but when you have it full, it's uncomfortable. That's where I'm coming from. Either way, thanks for watching and commenting. -Krik

I have a cheap Wal-Mart version of this bag. (Lower quality material, zipper etc.) But pretty much identical layout. I do have it set up as my edc bag so I am not wearing it for long distances but I believe that is really the plan for this bag. With the pockets laid out the way they are I think the idea was for frequent access not long distance comfort. My cheapy also has a longer tall on the strap so I can extend it before I rotate it around so it hangs lower for ease of access. Nice review.

Damn outstanding pack! I have the red rock sling bag. Not bad for what it does for little bit of money. However the life span on the redrock sling bag won't last more than a year due to I pack them with lots of stuff for work such as lunch and other necessities. But, this bag will full fill my expectations and needs!

Maxpedition should bring out a version of this pack with a zipper pocket on the side in place of the water canteen holder because the Sitka has room for a 3 litre water bladder and I think a large pocket on the side would be handy for extra mags when I'm at the range or out shooting Roos (Kangaroos)

Great review and I think you a lot of great reviews; but I think the concept of the 'sling bag' type of pack you're not getting. Basically, it's man purse. It's a light duty pack that can be access many of times during a trip with out taking it off. It has a lot of compartments to help organize items. I do agree with you on a lot of things you said about it, but just think man purse. lol (Peace)

Yea I think the mongo is too large in relation to the hip belt being used on the bag. The Jumbo versipack is much better suited for the 1 inch hip belt. I still believe that the weight of any bag should be held with the hips. A single shoulder strap is fine to just stabilize the bag. -Krik

They also should have centered the back strap so it does not flop on your back on the opposite side of the strap. The Malaga does not do that for example.

check out Everything-out-there in eBay stores. They make an excellent copy of the Maxpedition sitka with 2 straps. It is better quality than those cheap $20 packs.I have to say after owning a sitka, the mono strap was uncomfortable after wearing it with any weight in.Comparison and quality between the 2 bags is minimal, and of course there is the price.you can buy 3 of these for the price of one maxpedition bag because It sells for $49.99 with free shipping!

It is a shame that Maxpedition would use cheap plastic buckles. I may replace mine with a steel buckle. However, I must say that I will in no way endorse or recommend Maxpedition. I will have no other choice but to tell anyone in my industry that the buyer should be aware that cheap parts are in no way. supported or covered. I will not buy Maxpedition again. It just is not worth the money. Cheap parts and no support.
