As soon as he said the resistance was only concentric I knew what this company was doing. They are using adjustable rotary dampers. In conjunction with recent adjustable shock technology. Basically there’s a hydraulic fluid inside providing resistance, this resistance is varied by changing the size of the passage way, that’s what the dial does. This is also why they can’t put a “lbs” rating on there because hydraulic dampers are relative to pull velocity, similar to a row machine, slower speeds will provide less resistance than higher speeds. Therefore the company can’t make a set in stone claim of a resistance value for a given resistance level.
@BlueyMcPhluey
@BlueyMcPhluey 2 жыл бұрын
I can't fully visualise the design yet, so why do you think this wouldn't this allow for eccentric resistance? I thought rotary dampers damped in both directions
@EAGLINWRX
@EAGLINWRX 2 жыл бұрын
@@BlueyMcPhluey they do, but this isn't a 2 force flexure. They're using a cable. A cable can only operate in tension. And the damper can only offer RESISTANCE. It's an opposing force. So on the ecentric motion the cable is being retracted by a spring ratchet, the. On the pill strike the ratchet teeth engage (or clutch or whatever they're using) and provide a tension force, now remember the rotary damper will react to forces provided, so now it will provide resistance. The build would be a rotary damper attached to a one way clutch attached to a spring that reels the spool in attached to a spool with the handle on it. You pull the spool up it engages the clutch and pulls on the damper, this provides resistance. At the top of the stroke the cable can only provide tension so it can't effect the damper on the down stroke, this is where the spring reels in the spool, the clutch is one way so this doesn't affect the damper and now the system is reset at the bottom and ready for another pull.
@BlueyMcPhluey
@BlueyMcPhluey 2 жыл бұрын
@@EAGLINWRX ah thanks I think I'm seeing what you're seeing. To be clear, do you mean that on the way up they're resisting both the spring and the damper, but on the way back they're just resisting the spring? If so, then perhaps a solution could be to use a stronger spring? This would be so much easier with diagrams 😅
@EAGLINWRX
@EAGLINWRX 2 жыл бұрын
@@BlueyMcPhluey even if you used a stronger spring it would only be used to retract the line, so it wouldn't be an adjustable resistance. So it would be better to leave it light so you don't discriminate from those less strong

Here's an idea I hope someone steals -- instead of using a damper/dashpot like the MaxPro (resistance proportional to speed) or a spring like the AnCore (resistance proportional to distance), let's see if someone can develop a lightweight home or portable cable system using high torque electric motors with electronic controls. You could customize the force curve to overload the eccentric motion, or where the muscle is most stretched. Integrate it with a smart home device so you can say "Hey Google/Siri/Alexa, lighten it 20 lbs for a drop set."

Yeah I saw one that was used for 1700. It only has 100lbs or 50lbs each cable. And no way of upgrading it. Cable machines are expensive. Or they use crap pulleys that will wear out quickly. Same for a couple of knock off total gyms. They pulleys and rollers were nylon or plastic that wore out.

I bought the max pro 10 days ago. Really liking it so far. Before purchase I was concerned the lack of resistance in the eccentric phase would result in a huge case of buyer’s remorse. It doesn’t bother me at all, so far. In fact. I’ve decided the variety the MP provides by not having resistance in the eccentric phase is a benefit rather than a detractor. It doesn’t mimic or replace bands or cables; it’s just its own thing that provides a different workout than you’d get with bands, cables, or weights. I’ve learned that variety is a pretty big deal for me to be consistent in my workouts. So far, the MP is proving to be a solid option. Design looks and feels sturdy. We’ll see how it holds up after a year of regular workouts. I also really like that I can do half a dozen different movements pretty effectively without having to change handles or positions. Basic movements include deadlift, a modified clean, curls, cable crossovers (underhand grip), front/side shoulder flys, and shoulder press. One of the main advantages has been the ability to hit a bunch of different movements quickly without having to load/unload plates or switch machines. I can get a good resistance workout in fairly quickly. The cable does sometimes get in the way of your motion a bit on some of these lifts. Less than ideal but, for me, the interference isn’t enough to ruin the lift - so, not a big deal so far. Also, adjusting the resistance is very simple, quick, and work well. I agree that it would be better if the resistance indicator was marked I lbs instead of just numbers that don’t seem to correspond to kilos or lbs. Still, not a huge detractor.

First of all thanks for doing this review. I wound up buying the bundle. I am not sure why there seems to be a lot of hate about concentric training in the comments. There is actually a lot of literature out there, including studies, showing that concentric training is actually pretty good. I am also going to link an interview of Pendley, yes the guy who has a row exercise named after him. You'll see he likes concentric and explosive exercise. The part about recovering faster and being able to work out more often is also true. In general for something like a deadlift you don't want to place the bar down, it is best to drop it (if your gym allows it). You skip the eccentric side. The MaxPro allows you to do this at home without dropping anything on the floor. I am not saying that it's better than doing both concentric and eccentric training, but calling the MaxPro useless because because of the concentric only thing, is a bit of a stretch. It's far from useless. I do still own kettlebells so I can actually couple the MaxPro with explosive training and if I want to add eccentric load I can do it with the kettlebells (or my bodyweight). I really love how versatile this is and it's excellent for small spaces. Cables are a fantastic tool and safer than free weights. The fact that you can mount this on a wall or a door or whatever, and you can use it standing or with the bench just lets you do so many exercises, and you don't have to go the gym. Maybe I am just the type of user this is meant for, but you know, you have your bodyweight if you really want to do eccentric work. You can get things like Kettlebells (I have adjustable ones from Kettlebell Kings so they don't take much space at all). And with the MaxPro on top I feel I pretty much have all I need in a small space. I am not in any way affiliated btw, I just happened to have used it and like it very much as it meets my needs. The Pendley interview is below. www.t-nation.com/training/too-much-muscle/

And for significantly less than list price and probably less than day one backer price I have: 2 bowflex kettlebells, multiple sets of bands both loop and straight plus base and bars, suspensions trainers, steel club, mace bell, Indian clubs, multiple sand bags, weight vest plus some Craigslist standard plates and barbell, push up handles, door pull up bar with dip bar. For the type of hybrid kind of workouts I love it’s great and fits in a tiny space. And it’s modular, and can be as portable as I want. I suspected this machine was a goofy gimmick but had some interest. Now I now how right I was.

I have the chart of the weight printed out and taped on the wall so its a quick reference. There is no need to buy the full package and spend all of that money. The max pro alone comes with all of the accessories that you need. There are always promotions going on. I got the wall track free and $100 off so I only paid $750 for it so the $1350-$1500 is not expected. I love the max pro. It was weird not to have the eccentric at first but I went really heavy on all of my movements and squeezed for 2-3 seconds at the top of each movement and left me crazy sore the next day. No eccentric but the concentric is consistent resistance so 80lbs is felt from the start of the movement. People need to stop comparing it to resistance bands its not the same thing. This is perfect to couple with a heavy set of adjustable dumbbells and a bench.

I learned a bit more about how it works now and why it can't do eccentric resistance. Basically, it squeezes 5 plates of sandpaper together to generate friction resistance. The higher the resistance setting, the more tightly pressed the plates of sandpaper are against each other to generate higher friction. It will never be able to d eccentric resistance without a complete design overhaul.
@andriosz

@Đức Trần I don't think it's sandpaper. More likely clutch packs like in automotive limited slip differential.

I got one as a sub for a cable machine (the non electronic one). We use it alongside the garage gym and really like it. The apps and electronic stuff didn't seem to be justified for the money. The basic thing is pretty cool, though, especially for cable-type stuff that can't be covered by a vertical pulley hanging off your rack.

I have noticed that a lot of comments about the non-ecentric phase of the unit have prevailed on here. I must say, I agree. And for me, that is not Bro Science. I have a Masters Degree in Kinesiology, and a Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology, as well as one in Nutritional Science. You can build almost as muscle in the ecentric as in the concentric. The company is not using science for their argument. Thanks Coop for all you do. I appreciate your reviews

GREAT REVIEW! Cool product! And I see the turn off by the only concentric resistance. I', thinking this would be more favorable for CROSS-FIT trainers because if the resistance is only one way, that's similar to when you're training with pushing the big tire end over end. Or pulling the same big tire or other weight with a rope across the floor. Like climbing a rope. Or even a rowing machine and true row training. Resistance in one motion, and then neutral. Likewise, it's like exercising with throwing the the medicine bag. As opposed to weight training where you exert the force of the move, and then CONTROL the weight back to starting position. lol....that's my take. Cool thing if a household group, co-workers in the office, or other groups who intend to work together with this device piece-up to purchase. Otherwise, yeah....it's a little expensive to mu budgetting. But still a great investment for all the perks and uses. Thanks for this vid and review and introduction to the existance of the product!

With a larger than foot length flat platform attachment this would be epic. Basically just screw in a piece of similar size to the existing foot pad on both the top & bottom of the existing foot pad. You then have triple the height so your whole foot is flat & stable plus the device is just as portable! Concentric only makes it brilliant for muscular endurance work - 12 to 100 reps - with little to no eccentric. EG a sled pull/push. If it had that platform I’d buy it but at a much lower price of $400 maximum.

i am looking for a compact "home gym" but not quite sure because of no weights listed on device, no clicking into spots so you know for sure without having to double check location on spin wheel, need incline and decline on bench and absolutely need resistance on the way back from any excersice motion. Plus having a free live workout you can follow would make it more of an incentive.

270lbs of one inch plates plus 6 foot one inch barbell I found on the side of the road people were throwing out.100 dollars for 5 sets of steel dumbbells. One bench,one trap bar for deadlifts, one cable for pulldowns = 440 dollars total. Way cheaper than this piece of crap that most people would never use if they were serious about working out to put on muscle. Craigslist is the place to go for good deals on weights.

Every review I see, the person never talks about how the weight or resistance “feels” Being in the industry forever, feel is everything. Does the resistance feel springy or it drags or is it like an air piston machine. I can do one rep on a piece of gym equipment and immediately know yes or no based on how the leverage is designed and how the weight feels. Hopefully it works as close to a free weight feeling as possible.
