Apple's new HomePod Mini comes at a much lower $99 price compared to the original HomePod which is now $299.
There are some pretty awesome new features like the Intercom feature, but in this video, we are going to focus on sound quality by listening to three different genres of music.
At the same time, Google released a new Nest Audio speaker which is much louder and should have better sound quality with a dedicated woofer and tweeter for the same $99 as the homepod mini and Amazon has brand new 4th Gen Echo and Echo Dot for $99 and $49 as well.
Which smart speaker is the best in terms of sound quality and features, and what limitations do they have? Lets find out!!

For sound quality, HomePod. For smart home device compatibility, Echo. So get a bunch of HomePods but a few of Echo dot (Echo dot are sometimes bundled for free when you buy other smart devices anyways.) 😆

They are not meant for hifi music. Speech sounds great on it so communications, notifications, audiobooks, etc work real well. Combined with the pricing, it's why Alexa is #1 in that market.

The echo do is a speaker is facing the front but the mic was on top. So it makes the sound of the echo dot even worse, the echo dot is actually has a decent sound.

LOVE the Homepod Mini. As I'm already vested into the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, Mac, AppleTV, etc) the Homepod is the obvious choice for me. I also own Echo, and although Echo is "technically smarter," if you use Apple devices, Homepod has some tricks. For instance, I use Carplay in my car. With a Homebod, all I have to do is tell Homepod where I want to drive to for navigation. Seamlessly, once I get into my car and use Car Play, my navigation is automatically set up. LOVE that. With the Incredible Sound of the Homepod Mini... I'm ALL In!

Think it depends. I am invested into the Apple eco system (Phones, Laptops, Accessories) and I decided to go with Google/Nest for my Smartphone eco system. They all work great together.

Suggestion for future videos: show us what they sound like at lower volumes. I find the sonic balance drastically different on these when your rocking a party vs having it on in the background at work or for socializing. I have the new echo and I find it gets harsh as hell as it gets loud too. Another suggestion is to test the audio with them close to a wall. No one would put an echo on a table in the middle of a room like your test. Put them on a shelf like we users do. That will affect bass balance. Thanks! I'm surprised apple hasn't made a speaker in the range between their two models as a $199 model would sound great. I guess you could stereo pair two of them.

like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, kzfaq.infoUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....

The icon indicating which speaker is active is screwed up in the second test with the echo dot failing to get the icon at all.

The Echo Dot and Echo have eq settings in the Alexa app that can and need to be adjusted. Once I adjusted mine the sound was much better!

You forgot a few other things: the Echo does not only have an aux-out. That aux-out can also be configured as an aux-in. On top of that, it also sports a full featured Zigbee Hub.

Good comparison! I bought a white home pod mini, I loved it so much the next day I went and got a space grey. Stereo pair in a room is amazing! And they look perfect, they melt in their surroundings.

That’s so funny I did the EXACT same thing haha. I love both colors and they do melt in the surroundings and look great . A suggestion ..check out the Spigen coaster stand on Amazon…there like 11 or 12 bucks and the hp minis sit on them they look nice in them

I have it too. It’s amazing! I did a sound comparison with the HomePod mini, Echo, and Echo Dot. The HomePod mini smashed the Dot, and it had better bass and clarity compared to the Echo. I love it!

No real comparison will be made between the Homepod mini and another speaker at the same price or less expensive. No medium or high sound is sent in your direction, but only the bass. It is on a piece of furniture, at a distance of 3m that the comparison must be made with the microphone on the person filming and not above the Homepod.

Okay yes, sound quality is highly subjective . But I feel that the Nest Audio deserves so much better than in this video. Yes, it has not this shattering low end, but it sounds so balanced and great for all types of music. The HomePod Mini is really U shaped to my ears (but not bad by any means) Sometimes I believe that everybody has forgotten about what good sound really means. To my ears the Nest Audio is not far behind the Sonos One. Only con is that it is very directional, so the sweetspot is a little bit small

I was already kinda planning on getting myself the HomePod, but dang it sounds nice! I already have some “real” stereo speakers hooked up to my tv, but in my small room you don’t get their full potential unless centered in front of the tv watching a movie or gaming. The HomePod should be great for Siri and my smart lighting setup, and for softer music or ambient audio whilst in my corner chair behind my big speakers.

I have a set of paired full sized HomePods in my living room and love them (got them on sale at Best Buy earlier this year for $200 each). Just bought the mini for my home office and am very impressed. I also really love using the phone handoff feature for calls. Regarding this test, the mini continues to impress. Naturally the larger speakers can achieve higher volume levels. One of the best features that the apple products have is the ability to hear you even while playing at loud volumes. This had been a serious source of frustration with my Google and Echo devices, granted they are older models. I am not sure if Google and Amazon have improved their listening skills on these newer models. Lastly with regard to Siri vs. Alexa vs. Google’s smarts, I would take security over diversity any day. Yes, Apple’s ecosystem is walled, for good reason.

On the echos, did you adjust the eq? By default they are kind of bad until you tweak the levels.

@@leebeeskee Ikr, they're absolutely fantastic when they work in pairs. Only problem is that, you are limited to only a pair though. I have 2 in most of my rooms, but in my living room, makeshift part hall and basement, I have to put a pair in every corner and synchronise them manually to play the same song and start together. Otherwise, it doesn't just give the same room-filling immersive spatial audio feel I get in my bedrooms.

@@leebeeskee I wish Apple would introduce a new device to connect more than 2, something like a 5.1 surround subwoofer, something like an AirPort modem maybe. Or they could also bring it out with a software update to AirPlay, where devices compatible with AirPlay 3 allow you to pair more HomePods together. Now that would blow me away.

1:04 thanks for mentioning this. I have an usb-c powerbank and I think it is an big deal it can do this. (Although it unfortunately can only give 15 watts where the HomePod needs 20. But the updated model that I need to inevitably buy when my current one dies, because it is more than 3 years old now, does have it.)

IMO the best sound: HomePod mini the most useful one: Echo personally I would pick homepod because it sounds well, it’s 360 sound, it is small and I could have it easily outside, Siri isn’t the best but it is “usable”

How is Alexa that much better than Siri? I recently bought an Echo because i wanted to use that legendary assistant everyone talks about, but Alexa is pretty much on par with Siri on my HomePod in my experience. What scenarios show Alexa’s dominance?

@@jackmanning1117 they have a much better eco system (smart home appliances wise) than the Apple’s HomeKit. Most of the cheap smart home devices support both Google Home and Amazon Alexa but not Apple HomeKit. Also sometimes Siri is just stupid compared to other assistants.

@@harryxie981 oh yeah I don’t use any smart devices so I couldn’t care less about the smart home ecosystem. I just use my smart speakers for playing music and answering random questions (which Siri seems to be just at good at as Alexa)

@@harryxie981 but that is not a great argument for the Echos or Alexa itself. The approach Amazon took with Alexa is quite dystopian. Since they couldn‘t care less about privacy, you can usually connect every smart home device that‘s out there - but usually at the cost of privacy AND security, plus quality of the product itself. Every major brand that I‘d trust is easily available as HomeKit compatible, Philips Hue‘s, Ikea‘s trådfri, Elgato Eve, Bosch, Vocolinc, etc. I have my whole apartment set up with smart home stuff and HomeKit is by far the easiest way to control all of those and make automations. Maybe on par of Samsung‘s SmartThings or even better. If you have the cash and don‘t want your data to land on chinese servers, definitely go for HomeKit. I use it every day and it‘s just awesome.

My bedroom is pretty much the only Smart zone in the house as I live with my family still so the Homepod Mini is plenty loud enough and sounds fantastic lol plus that Apple ecosystem is always phenomenal

I liked the homepod mini. I bought one as a computer speaker for my sons zoom classes. There was like one second lag on it so I ended up using the homepod mini in his bedroom to airplay my toddlers favorite lullaby KZfaq video. I can only do it with the homepod. I might buy three more minis

For 99 % of people price matters. The danger of getting in to the Apple eco system is that, you get locked in to the high cost system. Sure Apple products are great but once you go in, customers are committed to that high cost eco system. The ultimate decision is always 1) Do you mind the high Price eco system? 2) Do you mind being restricted in terms of accessibility in Apple's ecosystem? But I do agree Apple's devices are great sounding in a such a small package.

I have the Nest and I really like it, loud enough for the room, and looks great on my living room, my friends and family love it also! It's my first smart speaker though, before I had a Archeer a320 that really have great bass, but Nest is more balanced in cord instruments and vocals and the assistant is great, the best buy always depends of your personal taste and the space you want to fill with sound

Idk if the other products have EQ adjustment like the nest audio but when you crank up bass and treble on the eq settings they sound a lot better. I would never listen to my nest audio on default settings

This was an interesting comparison. Being an old-timer, who uses a pair of hearing-aids, the sound coming out of my iPad Air 2 was terrible. However, I watched your review, again with a pair of decent powered speakers which I have connected to my MacBook and the differences were much more evident. As it happens, just before I listened to your review on my iPad, I had set up a pair of Mini-Homepods , as a stereo pair in my living room and was so impressed by the clarity. , Most of my music is Classical and perhaps future demos could include a short snatch of Elgar's Cello Concerto , or a violin piece to see how non-amplified instruments sound.. I'm sure that some people do listen to such music amongst the younger group , that you aim your channel at. One more thing : having the speakers on that hard worktop might make the sound somewhat harsh. Perhaps a heavy cloth or anything softer might make a difference. I also have larger Homepods installed in three other rooms (I live alone ) so my house is also filled with such waking music as Shake Rattle And Roll or Rip It Up . Thanks for your efforts in making interesting videos.

@@truthistheKJV . I am listening to the stereo pair in a room about 15' 3" by 25' and they are sharp and clear and plenty loud enough. But I am playing popular instrumental tracks from the 50s and 60s, such as "Telstar" and "Take Five" ,and the bass in those days is nothing as heavy as modern rock, say. Remember, also that I am wearing hearing aids set at normal levels, so my hearing will not be anywhere as good as normal. Of course the depth is not as good as the larger HomePods, but look at the price difference. My advice is , if you have the money, buy a pair from Apple, try them You have 14 days to return them , if you are disappointed. Good luck.

I set up such a pair , about 3 hours ago. They are very good ( and I wear hearing-aids ) I have only tested them out on music from my Apple Match collection, so far.

homepod has this upper mid spike and low mids are kind of scooped compared to the nest, but overall really great. the big dot has awkwardly present highs.. nest has the best midrange, homepod allaround winner?

I got an Amazon Echo Dot. TBH the sound is great for me, It's got some bass and the music doesn't sound as bad. Worth the price for me. Oh, and if you put the Echo Dot at a corner, you can definitely feel the bass....

For a small device, the Apple HomePod Mini sounds really good compared to the two bigger speakers. Almost on par with them at a fraction of the size.

At 4:30, it Sounds like you failed to add the speaker graphic whenever the Echo Dot was playing. The sound changed but the graphic stayed over the HomePod mini. Yes?

Thanks that's the stainless steel gold millanesse loop or however you spell it lol. geni.us/O4JMpgG they used to cost more but Apple lowered the price and the original from apple is worth the extra compared to a cheap rip offs which look and feel worst with less powerful magnets and the gold fades quickly. Mine looks new after more than a year.

That fact that you guys have to "check" if you made the right choice lmao. I bought the Echo and immediately fell in love. Great quality sound, it's an actual smart speaker unlike homepod with simple Siri commands, and the fact that you can plug it in to any bigger speaker is amazing as it transforms essentially any speaker into a smart speaker with Alexa. I mean seriously, the things you can do with an Echo is insane.

I feel like the speaker icons in the test at the 5 minute mark are misplaced. The homepod display lights up when it’s the Echo’s turn, plus I can’t tell when the dot is playing.

I'm well and happy in my Apple ecosystem, but the audio quality and value of the Nest Audio is unmatched. I don't really care for Apple's features in the Mini, and tbh Siri is still trash, so the Nest Audios have been awesome and I love them.

In my opinion the HomePod mini is amazing! I have been using an echo dot for a long time, and its fine I guess. Google is good enough for the assistant Siri is good for music and makes more sence for someone who has an iPhone. And an echo id a good budget option if you have a lower budget and are ok with not amazing sound quality.

I own all three one in each room on the first floor and basement. Google has the best smart assistant, Amazon controls my smart home and I love the skills, finally I love the sound of the HomePod mini. The other two add more audio so when I want to listen to louder I use the Google or echo. But when I want really loud music with great quality I use the six out on the Amazon to a better speaker.
