Mercedes Sprinter Self Build Camper Van. Removal of existing roof fan and installation of new Maxxfan Deluxe. Please visit Leisure Vehicle Services for more details leisurevehicleservices.co.uk/...
The key features of this new fan are as follows:-
Obviously, the integrated rain rood, meaning the lid can stay open regardless of the weather.
The lid can be left open whilst driving, the unit has 2 strong lifting arms so the lid won’t flutter or rattle whilst you drive along.
10-speed fan, providing 900 cubic feet per minute on max. This is what gives the Maxxfan superior airflow/cooling over its competitors. That's an incredible 120 air changes per hour in our LWB Mercedes Sprinter
The 2-way fan will bring Fresh Air in or Extract stale air out of the camper van.
Ceiling fan mode - the fan can be run whilst the lid is shut, simply press the lid close button on the remote whilst the fan is running. A small amount of air will be brought in from outside in this mode, like a trickle vent.
Thermostat feature - set the temperature you want the fan to turn on at. When the unit senses within 1-2 degrees of your set temperature it will lift the lid and automatically put the fan on extract on the lowest speed. If the difference in temperature increases, the fan speed will also increase. Equally if the temperature drops then the unit will decrease speed or turn off and close the lid. To use this feature, adjust the temperature using the remote then press Auto and the unit will display a green light.
2-year international warranty. If anything should go wrong, due to the way the Maxxfan is installed we simply replace the entire unit rather than sending spare parts. The units are then repaired/refurbed for sale.
3 colour lids are available with this Maxxfan deluxe range and all the links are below.
White - solid lid, lets very little to no light through.
rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53...
Smoke - similar to dark sunglasses, looks black from the outside but does let lots of light through.
rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53...
Tint/Clear - fully clear lid with a very light grey tint, this also matches to the new range of roof lights from Maxxair called SkyMaxx.
rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53...
2 sizes of roof frame are available with this Maxxfan Deluxe
European standard size of 40 x 40cm and US standard size of 35 x 35cm

For anyone thinking of installing a fan (or fans).... We have a Large Heki roof light/vent at the rear of our van so no room to instal a second fan.. With this cracked open and the MAXXAIR fan on, this still creates a lovely cooling effect in our van (6m van conversion) with the fan set on 30% (extracting air) , so depending on yr set up, maybe 1 fan would suffice ?! 🤔 Another van build Masterclass by Mr V...👍🏼 Also a MASSIVE shout out to Leisure Vehicle Services who were BRILLIANT in sorting out an installation problem I had 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 🚐💨❤️

The time and research as well as your skills make them so beneficial to my conversion project. Before I do anything I make sure I watch your video on the subject. I’ll be uploading my build series too as I go along. I have found some things you use are UK products so I’m trying to find the USA version of them as I trust what you are using.

I will comment on this video because it's the last of the build serie. Sir, your videos are excellent and teached me a lot! I would like to say a big THANK YOU for all the time you spent to make those videos! I had never found a so complete build videos since now. The only thing that continues to bother me it's the reflectix thing. Some ppl said that it needs to have a gap to be effective; and using it as a vapor barrier is a mistake because it will capture the moisture inside the insulation in place to let the wall breath naturally. Those ppl said that condensation will be on the steel of the van. As an expert in this domain (by your job), what is your opinion? So, again, a big thank you! If you plan to come in Belgium, I will be glad to offer you a drink and see and discuss about you van and conversion :)
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Xavier, I was asked the exact same question at the insulation workshop earlier this year. I proceeded to calculate how much moisture would be present in the air when you are insulating your van using psychometrics. With the volume in the walls it was only a couple of grams literally one or two drips. Nothing at all basically to worry about. In this application we are not using the reflectix as a radiant reflector but just as a vapour barrier. It has no insulation value. I have studied and worked in this industry for over 30yrs. We insulate cold surfaces for a living so they don’t sweat and condensate. I can prove it with science and through experience. You can trust my method 100%. 👍🏼

Warm greetings from Croatia!!! Thanks for all the tips you shared with us throughout this splendid series... Related to Maxxfans installation - Is there any particular reason these fans could not be fitted facing backwards? I guess it would be beneficial in several ways: better aerodynamics while driving with open lid creates less stress to fan assembly; elements would be dragged away by the backward wind in drizzle or light rain condition; less bugs in the mesh; in your case at least back end fan wold leave more room for solar panels... Hope you had and are still having a good fan with your masterpiece. Kind regards to fellow followers as well!!!

Hey folks, some gentle use of Jif on your roof is great for removing grime etc. works especially well on fibreglass roofs. I used to use it to clean customers PVC windows with when I installed them in the UK. it will actually lift dirt out of scratches as it has a surfactant in it. Just make sure to rinse it all off you paintwork as it can leave a white powdery dust behind. Also used to use Soudal sealants on the PVC windows, they are an excellent quality and on par with Sika, Bostik are also good. Keen on using these fans in the sprinter when I get stuck into it. Thanks for sharing Greg. Cheers

I may have missed something, but would just removing the 4 screws holding the fan to the frame on the out side of the van, give access to the inside, for some undesirable? I realise its difficult to make a van 100% secure, but that does look like an easy way in.

Brilliant video Greg- will be very helpful for when we do our skylights and fan installation! Just 1 thing, when removing the old sicaflex from the metal of the van, maybe it might be best to use a plastic scraper to avoid gauging into the metalwork of the roof? I know you hammerite protected it but maybe might help :)
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 4 жыл бұрын
Freedom Strider I have those plastic scrapers but they are not strong enough to get through the sikaflex you need a shape edge like a knife. If you are careful you can avoid scratches
@sebxj25vm

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, but there are some silicone cutting/removing tools made of very strong plastic, with a sharp edge. It might be a good idea to try and use something like that when doing any job close to the paintwork, to minimise scratches. Of course, for the bit where you inserted the scraper between the fan edge and the mastic bead, probably only a metal scraper would do.

A plastic scraper would do once the debond had taken effect for the last bits of clean up :D

I think the ones with a sharp angle type nose could be used to remove the outside bead on the edge as well.

You went for the larger flange to cover/reuse the previous holes, but if you were putting a maxxair into a new roof, would you choose the smaller flange? Would you you still need the Sikatape build up? Thanks Greg, great video as always.

Hi, fabulous videos, you might be a good person to ask, when thinking about buying a van and converting to camper then obviously sending off the log book to change into Camper or Van with windows etc, will the van then by included in this new VED hike for new Camper Vans or will it still relate to the Registration year of manufacture ?

Hi Greg, very useful video for people replacing existing roof vents like myself. At the moment I have a skylight in with an aperture of 400x400mm and I keep seeing that the aperture should be 355x355 but the model number on the box says 7500KI40 and that the hole should be 400x400. I don't really want to remove the skylight and end up in a jam with a hole too big! Any advice on this? Do you know if the model you fitted in KI or KI140? Thanks

Hi Greg. Thank you for yet another brilliant, helpful & very informative video!! I have one question Greg: I am doing a van conversion at the moment, I have a Peugeot Boxer XLWB. I have bought 1 maxxair deluxe 400x400mm fan for the van & thought about fitting it in the middle of the van in the walkway near to the oven/hob & shower door, but I am wondering now if I will need 2 maxxair fans instead of 1, what are your thoughts Greg? I have Seitz S4 (900x450mm) opening window in the rear of the van on one side next to the bed & another opening Seitz S4 window in the sliding door thats 1000x500mm. We will probably put 2 more opening windows in both rear doors too (500x500mm), so do you think I will need 2 fans or would 1 be sufficient? Would really appreciate your advice Greg. Keep releasing the great videos, have loved them all, thanks Greg! 🙂 Regards Tracey

i was thinking.. do you think If I remove the factory lid on my Maxxair fan and mount a big solar panel an inch over the lip of the fan body that it would be enough clearance to allow good air flow given it's 360 degrees of opening -AND - wonder if given the solar panels outer lip and an overhang roof of over 10 inches on the uncovered opening if this would be enough to keep rain water out even at highway speeds? I also have a wind deflector in the front as well. My thinking is it will work great and want to try to install a single 400 watt solar panel on my van roof.

Hello sir : ) I was watching to see the inside as there are sort of two flanges and I was wondering how you did it. But I couldn't see the inside when you were soldering. It makes sense that the outermost flange sits flat on the sheet metal roof and the middle 'wall' seats against the inside edge of the cut opwning.. But then what is the point of that bit with the nogs?

Hi Greg firstly I would like to say I think you are the guru of conversions and I love the vids. I'm thinking of getting a maxxfan delux a couple of questions 1 I live full time in my motorhome does the cold come in fan in winter or does it seal . 2 have you had any problems on windy days ie lifting fan. Also the hole where my vent in at moment is just over 45 cm long is 40 cm hole size or surround sixe.. ie would this fan be too small for my vent hole. Really appreciate your thoughts Many thanks Gary Essex
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Gary, thanks fo the message. Firstly the fans are amazing, they just work brilliantly. When closed there is a very small slot on one side that gives you a trickle vent but you must have that for min fresh air ventilation so you have fresh air to breathe. The fan is supported by two strong arms so no problem in the wind and you can even drive along with it open. You get a choice of two roof flanges to cover a 35mmx35mm hole or 40mmx40mm hole size. Hope that helps you out

Would you recommend a tilting mount system for solar panels to angle them and harness energy efficiently or does laying the panels flat does the job just fine?
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 4 жыл бұрын
It does make a huge difference if you can angle your panels toward the sun as much as an extra 30% power. We get around it by having a massive array, but if you are on a budget or stuck for space tilting is a good idea.
@ShivamAher
@ShivamAher 4 жыл бұрын
@@GregVirgoe Ok got it, so if less space=fewer panels so better angle them for max efficiency or else go with more flat placed panels to compensate the loss. Thanks for the prompt response. Love your work, your van, and your knowledge sharing. Might disturb you more in future.
