MaXXXine has been my most anticipated movie of the year. As a conclusion to the X trilogy, I found it to be a stylish and blood-soaked good time that cements this trilogy as one of the best ever!

It started off brilliantly, loved the sleazy 80s aesthetic but the third act was a complete letdown for me. I felt there was no real tension at all. There was some great set piece kills but ultimately seemed disjointed and a bit rushed. Felt the tone went too goofy toward the end and I feel slightly unsatisfied with how it unfolded. X, Pearl L, Maxxxine in that order, although I still think Maxxxine would probably be the most rewatch able out of the three as I liked hanging out in that time period more.

For me, the tone of the third act was there from the opening scenes.
@ryans413

I felt the movie needed 15 more minutes at the end there. It started very good you have a porn actress working in 1980s Hollywood and then we learn of these killings that are linked to porn stars and somehow Maxine could be tied to them. That was interesting plus when Maxine destroyed that guys testicles in the ally it made you think is she behind the killings. It was cool seeing Kevin Bacon but his character was badly written plus the two detectives had barely any screen time and we are suppose to care about them when they die really stupid deaths. The guy gets killed offscreen the chick gets stabbed by in the eye with a cross and rolls down the hill. That third act felt rushed and silly. I didn’t hate the film just thought the third act could have used some more time to be a better third act.

couldn’t agree with you more. the movie was visually stunning, with an amazing cast and stellar acting. However, this movies pacing felt extremely off, i kept waiting for something to happen and not in a good way. When it was good, it was great, but overall it felt like kind of a dud to me.

You nailed it it was rushed and goofy.. why did the 2 cops all a sudden seem so cartoonish.. and the shoot out scene felt more like a silly comedy the tone just felt off in the 3rd act..

Fully agree with you about Maxxxine. The aesthetics was stellar, but something was lacking, The tension wasn't there much. Maybe it had something to do with Maxxxine just seeming so unconcerned about it all as if she was just disconnected from it so the viewer feels that way.

I'm actually surprised by all the positive reviews, totally respect your opinion Cody and I'm glad you enjoyed it! I loved the first two films a lot and was really excited for this one, but honestly it fell flat for me and I think it's by far the weakest of the trilogy. The twist at the end felt so cartoonish and ridiculous and the social commentary didn't really land for me whereas the previous two films nailed what they were going for. Unfortunately this finale didn't stick the landing but I'm glad a lot of people are enjoying it, I wish I did but oh well. Film is subjective after all, great review nonetheless!

I got my grandparents into the series with X and Pearl (they’re not your typical grandparents lmao. They’re a little younger and more “with it” culturally) and they really enjoyed them both. Sorry I am gonna call a bit of a reviewer Bias on this one lol. It was not good unfortunately... & I went in with high expectations based off X & Pearl, and was so let down. I'm not alone, as a lot of ppl have said the same, and also critics agree, currently sitting at 75% Rotten Tomatoes, while Pearl & X both sit above 90%. The score & 80's Hollywood backdrop were the best part of the film, but the pacing & plot was all over the place & suffered from one of the worst 3rd acts i've seen in a while.
@coreyc5982

I agree wholeheartedly. It's not the worst movie in the world, but it definitely falls short of its predecessors. Ti West, who typically knocks it out of the park, seems to be more interested in recreating the look and vibe of the Reagan-era than actually crafting a suspenseful and disturbing horror movie. As I've said in my own post, "MaXXXine" can't make up its mind if it wants to be "Boogie Nights" or a horror movie.

I live in a small town, so this movie didn't make it here, just like x and pearl. So I traveled 4 hours to the closest location to see it and it was so worth it. I had to see one of these in the theatre. The 80s vibe and Mia Goth and Kevin Bacon were just amazing. It really reminded me of movies like "pieces" which I consider giallo horror. The camera use and chase with Kevin and Mia reminded me of that kind of crime drama scene you see in Italian horror. I love this so much. I got home by almost 2 in the morning and binged x and pearl. I think this trilogy is magnificent. I can't pick a favorite. So many versatile choices of film making through 3 different films and Eras. Ti West is my most anticipated film maker today. So happy you enjoyed it cody.

Really dug the movie. It’s my current best of the year. As to your point on Maxine’s arc. I think the arc was sort of the inverse of Pearl. (Which is why I think Pearl is more crucial to this movie than a lot have said). In Pearl when faced with hardship and problems she buckles and regresses. She doesn’t achieve her goal of being a star because of it. When Pearl tells Maxine in X “You are gonna end up just like me” that’s sort of setting the table for MaXXXine. Maxine refuses to lose her shot or regress. She is gonna stick with what brought her to the dance and because she refuses to accept a life she doesn’t deserve. Where Pearl did. I honest to God think the trilogy is brilliant. Great review as always, Cody.

I just got back from this and was quite disappointed, it's a shame. It feels like all style, no substance. We've moved from the enjoyable slasher in X to the character study in Pearl, and left with a lacklustre murder mystery that ends in a blindingly disappointing reveal. Yes, it draws from Lynch, Giallo - Martino especially, De Palmer, 80's Satanic Panic Horror, Schrader's Hardcore is a clear inspiration too, but it doesn't do much with that. Pet peeve here, but I hated that they felt the need to address the 'Psycho' set. For a film called Maxxxine, it has very little character development or progression of that character, Goth is good, but she feels like she's been placed into scenarios rather than growing through them. Ball-Buster Keaton felt a little on the nose too...

Mia looked constantly petulant or with a constipated face. No nuance to her performance. Her character not likable at all, the audience hard to warm to her. This film has so many mis steps. Why didn't she ask obvious questions to Kevin Bacon like "what does he want" or "who is he working for"? The reveal acting is hammy and terrible. This film is very weak and student like. No comparison to Argento's work that genuinely unnerves and builds suspense. Maxxxine is solid 2 out of 10.

I found it very fair and a bit disappointing for a Ti movie, For me, it started off pretty good, but then it just became fair, and by the last 15-20mins, it just didnt work for me... X 3/5 , Pearl 4/5, Maxxxine 2/5 glad you liked it thou

I saw Maxxxine last night. Though Pearl is still my favorite of the trilogy, I liked Maxxxine. The acting, the mystery, and some of the one liners and how they were executed really stood out. I can’t stop laughing at how (spoiler) pronounced the word deviants. 😂

I hear your opinion and I super don't agree. Maxxxine is an aesthetically pleasing but very poorly written mess. I see what they were going for, but the mark was missed by a mile. A movie I think did what Maxxxine wanted to do is The Neon Demon. Watch that instead.

About time. I thought original Scream trilogy would've been the perfect trilogy but they screwed up Scream 3. If you loved this trilogy, you should watch Ti West's underrated gem, The House of the Devil (2009). You won't regret it.

maXXXine,X,pearl maXXXine is my favorite because iv always been obsessed with the 80s iv always wanted a newer horror movie based in the 80s that shows the griminess of the era and he nailed it. X is perfect cuz it's so aware of itself and it nailed the 70s slasher vibe.pearl is amazing because mia goth is amazing her acting in pearl is insane she's incredible she jumped to one of my favorite actresses ever real quick because of pearl all around its the best horror trilogy hands down it will take ALOT to dethrone it

I’m a HUGE movie lover/fanatic and aspiring actress. I’ve already watched 21 new movie releases this year including Maxxxine which was my most highly anticipated movie of 2024. I throughly enjoyed Maxxxine! It’s now in my top five favorite movies of 2024 thus far along with Dune 2, Bad Boys 4 Ride or Die, Horizon: An American Saga: Chapter 1 and A Quiet Place Day One. This was another great movie review Cody. ❤❤❤❤

I’m kind of taken a back that you (at the time) find Maxxxine to be your favorite. To each their own for sure, however, this was my least favorite of the trilogy. I felt it should’ve started off with her leaving the farm and the audience getting to see more of how Maxine got into porn/more character growth and THEN a flash forward to years later. It felt very rushed and the third act was weird, predictable, and lazy. The run time needed to be extended. All of that being said, Pearl is one of my favorite movies of all time.

I also guessed the mystery within the first 20ish minutes. I feel like it was the weaker of the 3 and where I found it weakest was in the deaths. Aside from the one character, i feel like we fast forwarded. Especially with one character. We meet them and then they are dead. No death scenes. Just introduction and then BOOM they are a body. With both X and Pearl they didn't shy away from giving us the full experience. I think that's my biggest gripe.

Just after returning from cinema after seeing Maxxxine. Huge expectations after X & especially Pearl (Mia Goth should've won an Oscar, her performance right up there with Kathy Bates in Misery), unfortunately Maxxxine is bitterly disappointing. I expected this movie to be right up there with Drew Barrymore/Adam Sandler movie The Wedding Singer when it came to mid80s cheese, expected it to be way more violent, more explicit sex, more Hitchcockian......instead Maxxxine just barely dips it's tiny toe in, the supposed climatic scene in the end is ...a joke, in every scene Mia Goth is there posing with wind blowing through her hair courtesy of wind machine, if you're expecting Mia Goths performance to be up there with Pearl...brace yourself for major disappointment. Diehard fans of X & Pearl severely short changed with Maxxxine, bitterly disappointing.

This movie is tepid at best. I agree that "The Baconator" steals the show, but "MaXXXine" as a movie can't seem to make up its mind as to whether it wants to be "Boogie Nights" or a horror movie. Not scary, no sense of dread, and I never once thought Maxine Minx was in any real danger. Definitely the weakest of the trilogy with "X" being number 1, followed by "Pearl" at a very close second, and "MaXXXine" at a distant third. So far, "Late Night With The Devil" is the best horror movie of 2024. Maybe that'll change with the release of "Longlegs", "Cuckoo", or "Terrifier 3."

This movie was just OK. A lot of style, very little substance. Same bullshit of people who do bad things are the victims and the people who are supposed to be good in society are actually the villains. It's Hollywood's favorite stupid storyline.

I enjoyed X, blown away by Pearl and enjoyed MaXXXine. I think I maybe had my expectations too high for this movie because I loved Pearl so much. I wasn’t let down but something just felt missing in this movie for me. Which I was surprised because I’m obsessed with anything 80s but I thought they would have leaned into the slasher vibe more

Love me some Mia Goth she is such a Natural Actress. She doesnt talk a lot in her movies but she doesnt have to because she says so much with her face. I love all 3 as well. Its just something so special about this trilogy. And the 80's was such a crazy time in America. She reminds me of the Character Reese Witherspoon played in FREEWAY.

Ti West, good director. House of the Devil & You’re Next are amazing movies. This trilogy…no unfortunately…BUT Pearl, I’ve watched that movie 15 times now & I’m still not tired of it. It blows X & Maxxxine out the water! 10/10! It exceeded my expectations! Mia Goth should’ve gotten a nomination for that role or more recognition! X was OK, Maxxxine was OK, I would give both 6/10. They’re one watch & that’s it for me. Not bad, but not great. The standout to me in Maxxxine was Kevin Bacon as usual, even Elizabeth Dibicki ( I hope I got her name right 😑), & even Lily Collins soon out more. Maxxxine was more toned down to me, don’t know why. I think we put too much pressure on these directors, Ari Aster was just on the rise now it seems he’s pushed to the side for Ti West. They’re all talented & bring something to the genre. Just my opinion 😊

I’m sooo relieved to hear this from you, Cody! 🙏 I’m from Denmark and this film won’t premiere here before September 1st 🙄 If it lands on streaming before that, I won’t be able to wait for the theater-experience, sadly. Mia Goth is so incredible, and she SHOULD have been nominated for an Oscar with Pearl! It’s the EXACT same with Toni Collette in Hereditary! Such bull__SHIT, that the academy are ignoring such insane performances, just because they tend to ignore horror 🙄 Thanks for your work, Cody! You rock 💪🫶
