It's anticipated that the new defenses will guide any potential overflow of the thin-flowing lava away from the town. These defenses will be constructed alongside the existing rampart designated as L12, where lava accumulation has reached significant levels, surpassing the height of the walls in some areas.
Jón Haukur Steingrímsson, a geoengineer at Efla, explains, "What we do is move about 120 meters to the side and just lay down another line," The objective is that if lava breaches one barrier, another will intercept it, redirecting its course away from the town.
As lava started gathering at the existing walls by late April, it became evident that action was imperative. There's a finite extent to which the current defenses can be heightened.
"Because for every meter that rises, there is more width and more material needed - and then maybe at some point it is easier to just move and start over," says Jón Haukur.

This camera is situated on the southern tip of Þorbjörn. Þorbjörn is a 243 m high volcanic mountain next to the town of Grindavík. The camera is usually pointed Northeast at the erupting volcano but may occasionally pan north or south to observe other features of the area. It is about 2km away from the erupting volcano.

Interesting to see what berms have worked so far. Hopefully the new berms will also be as effective.

Good luck stopping or redirecting hot lava. It will be interesting to see if this helps or not.

It has already made a difference with the berms already in use. If the eruptions continue they could eventually overwhelm the berms, but not doing anything would surely not work!! Besides they may learn along the way how to better prepare for future eruptions.

They saved a town using sea water spray over 50 years ago. It's not rocket science.
