Just starting my 3D journey. I've watched so many tutorial videos and I'm just starting to watch yours now. Honestly. Seeing a face work through the tutorial vids makes your content so much easier to follow than most Pluralsight content. Thanks so much for the tips man. Amazing work.

Great tutorial man. I've been modeling for a long time now and I gotta admit, curved surfaces are always a problem for me. While I admit the problems very rarely arise from working with cylinders, the solutions you have here still apply.

I know I'm a little late to the party, but are there any general rules for how dense one should make cylindrical objects that have sharp transitions? I tend to try and model poly efficiently, so I'm generally going between 8 and 16-sided cylinders and very rarely anything over 24 sides because it's faster to edit objects with a smaller face count and even play around with the shape if necessary. I also model low-res as to allow the sub-D conversion work out the smoothing for me. The issue I run into is that I still have tendency to run into pinching at times, but I'm wary of having too many polygons as to be wasteful (I come from an old school gaming poly model workflow where efficiency was / is king; a lot of film models while they look good, also tend to have a LOT of seemingly redundant polygons that just wouldn't be used in a game model). It's one of those things that I still struggle with at times.

JL, this is absolutly what I was struggling with. Thank you so much for putting together this video. You are indeed a Maya guru! I get tunnel vision working on a specific problem and you have cleared it for me. On a side note, do you use 3Ds Max too, along with Maya or any other 3D package? Once again I truly appreciate this. Thanks, Dave
@jlmussi
@jlmussi 5 жыл бұрын
Glad this answered your questions. I've been there with the tunnel vision, often obsessing over things that dont effect the final result. As for as packages besides Maya Ive used or have experience with 3DsMax, Modo, Softimage, Zbrush and Houdini. IMO from strictly a modeling standpoint Modo and Softimage would be my favorite. Maya has definitely closed the gap in the last couple years.

A little life hack for anyone interested, I hardly see anyone do this. For quick selecting the cylinder cap you can just select the vert in the middle and convert selection to face. I believe the default hotkey is Ctrl F11 I personal find the paint selection tool awful, so i do lots of convert selections Ctrl F9 Convert to verts Ctrl F10 Convert to edges Ctrl F11 Convert to face Ctrl F12 Convert to uvs

Whats more challenging is blendinh spherical objects with other spehrical objects and Like cuts etc. thats the difficult part. Cylinders are manageable, but if you try to lets say do boolean subtractions with spherical shapes, thats when it gets tricky

If you wanted to work with lower subdivisions and get rid of pinching on curved surfaces i know blender has a shrink wrap modifier that does it by having a duplicate object with high subdivisions. Maybe maya has something like that?
@leecaste
@leecaste 5 жыл бұрын
Another method for the first cylinder is to model the low res version and instead of adding support edge loops or bevels, select all the edges you want to be hard, use the crease tool to crease them, smooth the model (real smooth, not preview), uncrease the edges and hit 3 for smooth preview...I'm having a dejavu right now, did I comment this exact same thing on another video? 🤔 Well an additional step at 4:45 is to make an edge loop (or more) surrounding the extrusion and follow the same steps you did after, this way you're making the artifacts smaller and the edges sharper.
@jlmussi
@jlmussi 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. I often work with Zbrush or other apps so I'm not a big fan of creasing as other packages wont recognize it.
@leecaste
@leecaste 5 жыл бұрын
JL Mussi no, just use creasing to apply the smooth to the mesh, uncrease and hit 3...it's a temporal crease to keep edges hard while you apply the smooth but you turn it off after smoothing.

hey i have a question. Once u finish with the model and u smooth it out like 17:34 , isnt that just the smooth preview? Is preview enough or am i suppose to use ‘actual’ smoothing tool which adds more subdivisions? which one is the right way to smooth an object if im gonna uv, texture in substance and maybe sculpt it in zbrush and all that?
@jlmussi
@jlmussi 5 жыл бұрын
Yes that is a smooth (sub D) preview. If you are staying in maya then yes, you can render out, or even apply a smooth at render time. Really depends on what you are going to do and the amount of geometry needed that will dictate wherever you can get away with a preview or actually having to do a smooth.

@jlmussi
@jlmussi 5 жыл бұрын
Think about the multi cut too as a swiss army knife. It does have an edge loop function but it will average the new loop between the two edges. So if I need a straight loop base off one edge I will use the insert edge loop tool, otherwise multi cut.
