A tip for those little rubber grips on the hooks: Take them off. Spray hair spray in to them & slide them back on. Once dry they they will not move. You can do the same for handlebar grips that slip & slide. Cheers!
@MrTonka6 жыл бұрын
Great idea! I used to use hairspray on my grips all the time until one time i was riding in the rain and the water activated the hairspray and my grips just slid ride off. Since then i used compressed air to get grips on and off. Until lock on grips were invented anyway. Thanks for the pro tip!!

i'm guessing a heat gun will shrink those plastic sleeves for a nice tight fit. a hair dryer might also work .

Thank you so much I just got this system and I was thinking the same thing about the 1×4 and then I thought well I would KZfaq it and boom there was your video. Thank you from San Diego.

For added security I cut a bit of the rope off and created a loop to put around the seat. I also put electrical tape around the top of the rubber part to hold it in place and haven't had any issues since. Good call with the board for mounting I am going to fix mine before winter.

Excellent ideas! I'm going to implement them to mine! Thanks Nathaniel!

The bar hooks should come from the inside (saddle side) 6:59 , verses the leading edge. The seat hooks can go under from the front and even be connected together, becoming a "U' shape; also, when used on the front sides, a rubber band can be used above the seat nose, holding the two 90°'s inward and supporting the nose.

Thanks for the review. I am going to get or make some. My bikes will connect to the top of the frame but I will swing the bike wheels up and put them on hooks so the bike lays on the flat between my exposed trusses. The hooks didn't look the best online so I may buy some pulleys, rope and fittings and build my own hoist set.

Thanks for the video. I just installed these but found the hooks work better if you hang the bike upside down from the wheels. It fees far more secure.

I have 2 bikes with hydro brakes, Shimano and Avid (hate em). I've had issues hanging that bike upside down and decided not to do it with the gravel bike (Shimano brakes). I hang my 3 roadies by the wheel but they are all rim brake, not hydro. PS --- Nice bikes Tonka!

I put some straps on the seat & handlebars. I did not trust those claw thingies.. You are correct the bend is almost a 90 degree and can slip off easily. Crash down on your head or worse. So now they can not slip off. i also had an issue with the cheap screws that came with the kit. One snapped off at the head when I screed it in. So I replaced them with some better exterior screws. All went well. Now for the second one. The space is really nice. Bikes are not in the way any more ! :)

Great idea! It's great having the bikes up and out of the way!

The claw things appear to be a liability if not a lightweight bike. Wife's bike weighs 55 pounds, half of that from a GeoOrbital electric assist wheel/battery assembly on the front end, so admittedly a bit lopsided weight-wise. Got it several inches off the ground (carefully because I didn't trust those hooks) and sure enough, the bike slipped right off them and fell to the ground. I think the weak point is actually the straight portion of that claw bit though and not the hooks themselves. It appears the hook portion may hold its shape, but the straight metal piece it attaches to will bend backwards with any decent amount of weight, causing that near-90 degree angle hook to sag further. Currently looking into options for a different style hook to put on the end, or maybe just go with an electric hoist to hold all the bikes at once...

Mine shred the rope how do I fix?

I’m designing a hoist using one of these to lift my honey-filled beehive boxes. The idea is to mount it on a welded frame that clips on to an industrial sack truck. I can then lower it down and wheel it away.

I have two of these (different brands, but very similar design), and have a love/hate relationship with them. They crank up great! Trying to get the pulley to release, though, to let the bikes down pretty doesn't work for me. I don't know why, but when I pull the rope down to release the tension on the pulley lock, it's enough tension where the bike won't drop down. I often end up having to get a ladder and climbing up to release the bike and/or pick up the bike from the hangars.

I've designed 2 of my own which use pulley wheels running on ball bearings and those hand cranked winches u may know from a boat trailer. I've made them in a way that u can just unlock the winches and have the bike come down nice and slow all by itself. Still not sure if I should make a video about them, but maybe it would be worth watching as they DO work very well.

Did you have any issues with the bikes not rising level? I installed my hoist, but the bike will not rise level...only one side goes up at a time. I've checked measurements multiple times and ensured the rope is threaded correctly. Any thoughts?
@MrTonka5 жыл бұрын
Sometimes when i start raising it either the rear or front goes up first, but all you have to do is puss the low side up and level it out. My typical process is to raid the bike up and when one pulley gets close to the top, i raise the low side so the bike is level, then let the locking lever fall on the rope.

I wonder if there is a way this could work if you have a peaked ceiling or is a flat ceiling required? Instead of hooks it would be great to find a system that would fit under the wheels like a tray rack. Ever seen anything like that?
@MrTonka2 жыл бұрын
I have. There are garage storage systems where a similar system drops down a large shelf, as big as 8'x8' square. You can put boxes, etc... on it and then hoist it above the cars.
@zfunk92 жыл бұрын
If I have a really high ceiling, could I hang 2 bikes on 1 system? Basically just attach 1 wheel to them so both bikes hang parallel to the wall facing the floor?
@MrTonka Жыл бұрын
You’d have to modify the system but as long as it doesn’t exceed the weight limits, should be good.
@barry28907 Жыл бұрын
I've seen complaints about the quality of the rope. What's your experience? Any reason I couldn't replace the rope?
@MrTonka Жыл бұрын
The first one I bought, the rope has become frayed and it's difficult to lower at times. Luckily, you can buy your own good quality rope and replace it when the time comes. outside of that, they've been great after 4 years.

When you're riding your bike, do you have to leave the pulleys hanging low? If you pull the empty pulleys back up out of the way how do you get them down again with no weight pulling them down?
@MrTonka5 жыл бұрын
Bluuplanet for mine I leave the pulley low and hook it on to the work bench somewhere so it’s out of the way. If you want to put them back up high, I would suggest hanging something with some weight from them to make it easier to get them down again. 👍
@Ewecnt5 жыл бұрын
I have two of these in my garage roof and my bikes fit between the A frames very nicely. I have a 1.5kg weight on each pulley for this very reason. I never remove the weights even when the bikes are on there. No need. I think these work even better in an A frame roof because the bikes lift higher than the beams, you don’t get the feeling you need to duck under them this way. Could even board the ceiling and have drop down flaps to hide them from prying eyes 🚴🏼♂️👀👍. I haven’t bothered tho.

Is there any concern about hanging the bikes from the seat/dropper post?
@MrTonka5 жыл бұрын
Good question. I do believe there is at least one version of dropper that doesn't like hanging from the saddle if the dropper isn't fully extended. But as long as the dropper is fully extended, all brands should be good.

Nice video on the hoist! I wish my garage ceiling was higher...
@MrTonka7 жыл бұрын
Thank bro. The ceiling height is super helpful. I've seen some ads for a hoist system that lifts the bike to the ceiling while it's on it side. Kind of pricy though.... www.amazon.com/dp/B005MHGD4I/ref=asc_df_B005MHGD4I5097133/?tag=hyprod-20&creative=395009&creativeASIN=B005MHGD4I&linkCode=df0&hvadid=167135146302&hvpos=1o3&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5654312378613658356&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1015089&hvtargid=pla-305982313843

Can these operate at an angle? My garage isn't finished and I'd like to install them right against the angled roof, so the bike pulls up between the 'ceiling' beams. I'm thinking it would work itself out and the bike still sit level.. anybody try it?

2:20 So you hated it when the handle bars were only 5" above your head, because your ladder would sometimes hook them when walking by.... yet you're fine with the wheels being the same distance above your head --> 1:43. Seems more like a location problem than a height issue.

Maybe. But I've never hit the tires of the bike while the pully system when carrying the ladder under them. Store your bikes wherever you like.
