CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Atticus (Gregory Peck) addresses the court and describes Mayella's guilt for tempting a black man, and the dire consequences her guilt has caused.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiographical novel was translated to film in 1962 by Horton Foote and the producer/director team of Robert Mulligan and Alan J. Pakula. Set a small Alabama town in the 1930s, the story focuses on scrupulously honest, highly respected lawyer Atticus Finch, magnificently embodied by Gregory Peck. Finch puts his career on the line when he agrees to represent Tom Robinson (Brock Peters), a black man accused of rape. The trial and the events surrounding it are seen through the eyes of Finch's six-year-old daughter Scout (Mary Badham). While Robinson's trial gives the film its momentum, there are plenty of anecdotal occurrences before and after the court date: Scout's ever-strengthening bond with older brother Jem (Philip Alford), her friendship with precocious young Dill Harris (a character based on Lee's childhood chum Truman Capote and played by John Megna), her father's no-nonsense reactions to such life-and-death crises as a rampaging mad dog, and especially Scout's reactions to, and relationship with, Boo Radley (Robert Duvall in his movie debut), the reclusive "village idiot" who turns out to be her salvation when she is attacked by a venomous bigot. To Kill a Mockingbird won Academy Awards for Best Actor (Peck), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Art Direction.

The jury took a while to come to their decision so I hope that means they were touched and convinced about what Atticus said however in the end racism got the best of them.

this is why we need these books kept in our schools and libraires. we need to keep in mind wrongs to make sure they are never done again. as the remove these books and history from the schools we start to forget then repeat the same stupid things over again. it also teaches us to not judge until all the facts are there. as for young Mr. Till sad that some people are so stupid in the action we should help each other not hurt . my God Keep young Mr. Till in peace and love . to those that hurt him well .

That's not completelly truth. A writer claimed she told him something to that effect, but she publicly denied it. So we didn't found out that it was a lie. It maybe was, probably was, but there isn't that confirmation from her. She claims she doesn't remember, I think.

I was originally here for my English class (I'm a freshman in highschool right now), but now... Seeing this book in a visual form, I can see it all now. The book addressed the issues of racism, false rape accusations, equality, the right of expression/individuality, and maybe even more. I haven't even finished it yet, but I'm so astonished by it! I can't wait to actually watch the movie soon!

I loved Bob Ewell's karma. He and Mayella cost Tom Robinson his life, and Bob demonstrated just how much a loser he really was by trying to attack Atticus through his kids ( even though he won the case). The neighbor, Boo Radley, kills him.Long story shortened, he and his daughter used a lie to take a man's life, and in the end Atticus and the sheriff covered up the true details of his own death, quite shamefully( I might add). Atticus, the kids, and he sheriff knew that Boo Radley killed him, but all parties end up alleging that Bob got drunk and toppled onto his own switchblade.
@ifeelpretty5790
@ifeelpretty5790 9 ай бұрын
He also terrorized Mayella, beating her and isolating her from society to the point where she was too scared and traumatized to turn against him and tell the truth that Tom was not her abuser. Mayella is definitely in the wrong for lying but her fear and distrust of everyone is her father’s doing, she’s completely under his control. Once he’s dead she’s free as well but sadly she’s probably not going to survive for very long with no connection outside of her family and her shaky mental state after the lifelong abuse and her inadvertently causing the death of the only person who ever showed her kindness and sympathy. Bob Ewell was the absolute devil and almost no one survived when they came into contact with him. That scene where he trespasses onto the Robinsons’ yard and eyes a sleeping Scout 😬, it was like he was looking for a new victim now that there was more attention on his family dynamic after his accusation against Tom, it’s like he knew that word could get out of his abuse and he wouldn’t be able to get away with abusing Mayella for much longer so in his sick mind, he had to find another innocent life to ruin.

Good thoughts below. Congratulations young men and women. Tom was found guilty by the jury, BUT THEY HAD TO THINK ABOUT IT. In 1930s Macomb that was the 1st public step of the community at large. The sheriff didn't want Tom in jail. He knew Tom was innocent. The judge didn't want Tom to be found guilty, thus he asked Atticus to defend him, because Atticus did things others wouldn't, BECAUSE it was right. The judge was disgusted by the verdict and walked out of the courtroom without thanking the jury, because he thought them cowards. Private changes were already starting in the intellegent men of the county. Tom was legitimately killed by a deputy while trying to escape, against Atticus' advice. The sheriff felt so bad, he mentioned it in the epilogue after Boo killed Ewell. Boo Radley was God or God's Watchman. God had watched men do cowardly things and finally came out of his house to protect Atticus' children and to wreak justice on evil. PEOPLE WERE CHANGED. Change starts small and starts in small men's hearts. We'll those are just my feelings, a man from Alabama, born to Scout's world.

S Tho Although the deputy shot Tom Robinson down for escaping, he was shot, SEVENTEEN times. Again follows the theme of how racism was still running rampant during those times, as it only takes a few bullets to stop a man, not 17. Racism won this battle, but this small battle had to be lost in order to win a bigger war against racism. It's why Atticus fought his hardest in the Tom Robinson case. Paraphrasing Atticus, just because you will lose doesn't mean you should stop fighting. Just my two cents on the situation.

I’m so thankful to say that I read this book 50 years ago as a set text in my Australian classroom. Wonderful book coming just after the annulment of the White Australia Policy. I didn’t know anything about the strivings of minorities in North America but in my innocence, this book meant so much. Unfortunately my teachers were inept enough not to use current day politics to expand upon its deeper meanings.

@SomethingSomethingg
@SomethingSomethingg 9 жыл бұрын
Huh? First of all, I wasn't even trying to be funny. I'm just expressing how much cinema has changed for the worse, how if To Kill A Mockingbird was made today the characters would be swearing every other sentence, they'd have someone like Megan Fox play Mayella or Maudie and write in a completely needless scene like her taking a bath or undressing just to show off her naked body, and they'd make Bob Ewell's struggle with Boo Radley graphic and excessively gory. They'd probably throw in a fart scene along the way too. Filmmakers today think that you need these qualities to make a good, entertaining film. Even the most acclaimed movies of the year nowadays are filled with this. I find it lazy in my opinion. In these days, you couldn't do this kind of crap...you actually had to be inventive and witty. Watch "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" for example. They couldn't just have George and Martha say the F word every three seconds like they do in similar movies today like August: Osage County. They had to come up with other dialogue to express the character's hatred and venomous attitudes towards one another and, as a result, I think it's far more effective.

@@filipkarwowski6510 lol no. firstly the same people who accused tom would of supported kavanaugh. their called trumptards. second while i don't believe kavanaugh is innocent or guility why did no women accuse neil gosch or scalia etc. if it was a hit job by the dems why not also target neil. after all they had more reason to stop neil as he was selected over garland.

habibti wahbiea Well considering that To Kill a Mockingbird is a required reading in English I (freshmen class) in most states, I don't think you're the only 14 year old to read the books twice.

This entire section of the book makes me so angry. They are so blinded by their ingrained prejudices that they refuse to look at the hard evidence laid before them. So few of the characters really know what happened, because the others refuse to listen to Atticus purely because Tom is black. It makes me sick.
