HSP is a personality trait. Every little thing will bother you for no reason at all. If someone's music is too loud or a perfume is too strong or you are in an uncomfortable situation, etc., you will just feel funny about it. Things bother you and you just don't know why. It's really weird. For example, if I am watching a concert video and there are a lot of flashing lights, I immediately get a headache. It's not just feeling things strongly. Sounds and lights and other things will bother you if they get too intense.

Thanks for explaining. Medical text usually has more difficult names for afflictions and diseases, so HSP meaning Highly Sensitive Person is as simple as it gets... I guess. By the way, if music is too loud, I don't like it. Perfume too strong? Depends I guess on who is wearing it. Uncomfortable situation? I'm in one now. But, if you can't explain your difficulty (not you Catherine) then people tend to invent an affliction. However, I give you this, we have a huge amount of disparate personalities, so somewhere there is a 3 letter acronym to describe them all. I'm GAY. Generally Annoyed Yesterday. But I hope for better tomorrow. Man I'm going to be beat up on that one.

I'm like that if a tv is too loud. I don't know how to explain it because it's not really like loudness always bothers me but it does if I'm in a very small enclosed space and it's too loud. Strobing lights do it as well.

@@chloes.8026 I agree with you there. I have a 'roommate' whom I've known for years. Sometimes I don't know who is the one that's more deaf. I think it only matters who is still drinking, and who is trying to sleep. Meanwhile, it's way too damn loud! I'm just depressed and too sensitive. Which I guess makes sense. These are depressing times.

Exactly, a miss understanding of HSP's is that it is a illness or a problem ( Diagnosis) , when in fact you are gifted with a unique trait tat only 20% of the population has. Here's the disturbing part, 30% of the population have been identified as being LSP's or "Low Sensitive People". On the higher end of the LSP's are people with little care or regard to others, they have little to no empathy and their thinking is generally less in depth. On the lower end of the LSP scale is the narcissistic and even psychopathy people. 50% of the worlds population fit in between and this is what many see as being "Normal".....normal is a setting on a clothes dryer! So much anger in the world today, HSP's are deeply caring, empathetic, kind and understanding people. Our biggest issue is the harshness of the LSP's, this is how the term ""Overwhelmed" comes into play. Think about this? Imaging a world full of LSP's?

People who are hsp are often over-stimulated and get extremely tired, agitated when they have had too much to do on a day. The brain filters things differently or it doesn't filter very well, so small things seem to matter just as much as the more important things. It's a real learning curb to figure out what your brain does in certain situations. It is possible to calm the brain though, it takes a lot of practice and getting to know your limits. It's good that this is talked about more these days, gets things going!

1. I do need to see a therapist some day unrelated to being HSP, because I do have past trauma to work through, but in the meantime I can probably help myself a smidge by at least 2) reading this book so I don’t feel so weird about being HSP which sometimes I do feel burdened by, while most times I embrace this personality trait because I do think it’s one reason why I am the person that I am.

Yes, and I try not to think about it too deeply. You summed it up perfectly...she is real, with a good sense of humor an intelligence as sort of the sprinkles on the ice cream. In a way she reminds me of a woman who I spent and entire evening with a couple of decades ago. At the end of the night she closed the book she was reading and smiled across the lamp at me. “Oh. Are you still here?” I closed my book and smiled back at her. It was the end of a perfect first date. Sometimes it takes a simple thing, like closing a book, to realize you are with your soul mate. She is in her 80s now and I am entering my mid 70s. Circumstance finds us 800 miles apart, but our hearts have never parted.

So i don't really like following labels as we can pretty much make up anything we want and give it a name and start a trend.. but yes call it what you will, HSP, Intuitive, Empath, ESJP, ETC... All i know is that I have deep emotions and yes I am highly sensitive to astute to those around me, I feed off their energy whether good or bad or sad, i can feel it all, and negativity just like sonar i can see, smell, feel it right away... I am very intuitive to the point of eeriness, I can only take on so much sadness and negativity or it drains me, especially when you try to stay in a positive bubble. ECT Anyways Very special people I say have these gifts because they are the carers, givers, unselfish beings, that try to make the world a better place.
@SL-lz9jr
@SL-lz9jr 3 жыл бұрын
And ironically by being in these caring roles it can exacerbate things. E.g. I tried to go into social work but promptly left because I could never leave my job at the door. I’d be sad and crying over the world. Even fictional films about people suffering would cause be so much grief. It’s hard to be so sensitive and so empathetic to humanity. But, I am learning to embrace this personality trait.

High sensitivity is not a “diagnosis” because it is not a condition, but a temperament/personality trait and is normal. Unfortunately, this is how misinformation begins. Mayim studied neuroscience and hopefully she will eventually do her research and address her mistake. Mental health is an extremely serious issue and doing a podcast without proper research and authority may do more harm than good. Dr. Elaine Aron is the scientist/psychologist who identified the trait of high sensitivity. Her website hsperson.com is the best source to understand the trait. 20% of humans and over 100 species are highly sensitive.

I really wish she didn't keep saying "diagnosis"!! it is not a diagnosis, it is a trait! Kind of like being an introvert or being left-handed--you wouldn't call those "diagnoses". Still great that she talked about it, though!

Call Me Kat is based on a terrible premise. I would think she would have noticed that if she is se native. The costars will just make matters worse. I understand what she is saying. We feel for others so deeply. I can see someone walking and know they r in pain and feel for them.

I don't think this woman is sensitive or intuitive because she did not react at all when kelly raised her hand...or when kelly payed her a compliment...

Lol she’s not that kind of sensitive or intuitive person. And it doesn’t mean we aren’t flawed human beings. We still have our blind spots. Plus other personality traits that intersect with being HSP. It just means that generally we are way more empathetic people, we feel emotions more deeply, and we rely heavily on intuition to guide us. We make great mediators because our capacity for empathy means we can relate to both parties in a quarrel or dispute. We can be impartial or nonjudgmental. It doesn’t mean we don’t miss things or don’t have biases. No one is perfect. But yeah... has nothing to do with her lack of reaction to Kelly.

I’ve been reading that HSP and empaths are different but related traits. It’s possible Mayim is both. I definitely am not an empath but an HSP.

Hm doctor or not, I don’t think people who are overly sensitive get diagnosed, our senses are based on so many variants including depression , self esteem, dailymoods, hormones, intelligence, motivation , upbringing, diet, social dynamics, ETC....

There you go. If you’re hyper-self-involved and convinced that you just feel everything more deeply than everyone else - you’re a diagnosed “Highly Sensitive Person”. Great. Another reason for some people to believe that their feelings are more important. Interesting fact. Every teen between 13 and 18 is a HSP. Every single teen. Thank goodness many mature past this diagnosis.

Lol! 'Highly sensitive'! Does that include traits like, taking everything personally, and needing to control!!!!? What are the non developed coping skills!?

But It’s not a ‘diagnosis’....Hsp is an innate trait that 15-20% of the population is born with. There’s nothing to ‘treat’ or diagnose 🤷‍♀️ it doesn’t make you better or worse than anyone. It’s literally just how you’re ‘wired’, like introversion or extroversion

We all need to contact Kelly and Mayim to implore them to make a retraction. Being sensitive is not a mental health disorder and their stating it the way they did is seriously harmful.
