Ben Stiller joins us in the studio to discuss his parents’ influence, his mental health journey as a child, how the pandemic brought him and his wife Christine Taylor back together again, his workaholic tendencies, and what’s next for his career. He and Mayim share the nightmares they had the night prior, Ben shares his favorite Yiddish words and Mayim teaches him a new one during an impromptu Yiddish Word of the Day segment! Ben opens up about what it’s been like to make a documentary about his parents, how his marriage echoes his parents’ relationship, and his mother’s struggles with alcoholism. He recounts his feelings of separation anxiety as a child, the interesting forms of therapies his family tried, and his experience with transcendental meditation. Mayim details her digital detox and inspires Ben to consider giving it a try, and they discuss how creativity can add something incredible to or get in the way of a romantic relationship.

Ben, one day I saw your parents in NYC and I got so excitred that I almost got hit by a car on the corner. They laughed and helped me! It was one of my biggest thrills. Loved them, so did my dad.

I met Ben a few times when i worked at Universal Studios Hollywood. He was such a nice guy back then, and very personable and approachable! As he told me In 1997/1998, His favorite ride was the ET Adventure which I had worked at for 3 years, from 1996 - 1999. I seated him on the ride vehicle twice and greeted him once as he walked thru the park headed to the lower lot Studio Center (where ET use to be). Meeting celebrities was always a perk of working there.

I like Stiller's body language. The way he sways his chair and has a demeanor like he is just a regular person meeting another regular person. I watch so many comedian podcasts where they sit and move like they are superior beings, like they are above everyone else. You can tell a lot by how someone sits and acts during a conversation. He seems to actually listen and be thinking like a grounded person.

OK so many gems of wisdom in this interview (you are doing an amazing job Mayim and are truly so amazing at interviewing in a non intrusive way but getting people comfortable enough to open up in a way that feels safe and secure) but the best part was that Ben had a drink next to him that he had probably brought with and was so intrigued by the conversation that the level didn't go down the entire interivew! Call me a dork for details for noticing that, but to me it just showed that this was a conversation he was super engaged with.

I agree with Ben & Mayim here! I can swear that the workaholoism Ben speaks about is a real thing. It’s a drug that consciously or unconsciously some of us look for like evasion, as in all addictions. It took years, lots of stress, nights of bad sleep & a cancer to me to realize it & try to amend it.. On a less serious tone, sharing your nightmares before today’s episode has been such a pleasant dream to us! 😅

I saw what I believe was his debut as an actor in "House of Blue Leaves" with John Mahoney at Lincoln Center and while he's continually improved as an actor (and he can do both--I really liked his version of "Secret Life of Walter Mitty") he totally floored me as a director on the extremely serious true crime mini-series "Escape at Dannemora." Also, grew up watching and loving his mom and dad, one of the great comedy stand-up duos of all time.

Loved this one so much. Both Mayim and Ben’s conversations were amazing and had me taking notes! Something hit me pretty hard when Ben said “why do parents love their children so much?” Moved me to tears because the love I have for my children is incredible. Then I thought “and why do some parents (my 8 year old son’s father) have no interest, love or a real connection to with their children. It blows my mind, breaks my heart for my son, angers me etc.

I cannot see in Ben his parents .. he is a really great comedian and actor but I cannot see the connection .. :( he's a great guy and the interview was really great .. :) Mayim is very very good at hosting her studio interviews .. loved it .

I learn so much even from just the brief discussions in these interviews & in your other social media specifically about your Jewish background, & I just wanted to say thank you for that. I must admit that I come away from this discussion with a whole new appreciation for Ben Stiller. I had always respected him for the sake of his parents whom I absolutely enjoyed watching when they worked together. (How could anyone not love Jerry and Anne?) But, through the course of this discussion, I can gladly state that the apple really hasn't fallen far from the tree in Ben's case. The fact that he wrote that sketch on the family therapy demonstrates that. I'm looking forward to the documentary and to his future endeavours, particularly in light of his journey of introspection. Thank you, Mayim, for inviting Ben onto the program and, consequently, for allowing me this opportunity to see him in a new light.

These two make me proud to be a Jew, whatever that means. Such kindness, intelligence, respectful inquiry, humility. Sometimes I feel Mayim's brain racing -- like she's so fascinated, and the ideas are saturating her neurons. And another thing: I adore when she inquires with boundaries -- asks personal q's in a non-invasive way. She's a real pro. They both are mensches. I don't know how that adds to the conversation about what mental issues were discussed or how Mya's or Ben Stiller's conversation relates to you or any intellectual commentary that you would like to add all it reflects his idol worship just like the comment above you talking about how the interview looked and how she did a great job instead of continuing on the conversation and asking questions or adding input to something that was specifically discussed. That's what happens when you put clout and false idol worship above everything else that makes people look ill intelligent

I love how Miaym projects her reality onto the interviewed person, and they redirect her to their reality. It makes me more aware of also doing the same. Love this podcast.

Can't wait for the documentary on Jerry and Anne. They were so great. You could always see the love between them when they were together 😅
