Dr. Mayim Bialik

2 жыл бұрын

Dr. Maya Shankar (cognitive scientist, Senior Advisor to Obama administration, host of Slight Change of Plans podcast) breaks down the role of language in cognition and why understanding human behavior makes a huge difference in informing government policy. She discusses her pivot from Juilliard violinist into neuroscience after suffering a permanent hand injury as a teenager, and how she created her own role in the White House. Mayim and Maya explain why “I” statements are the best way to communicate difficult emotions, the benefits of speaking to yourself in third person and achieving positive lifestyle changes through a technique called “temptation bundling.” Maya opens up about using her anxious thoughts to propel her to strive for positive change in the world and the benefits of spending effective time in the past and future. Mayim addresses the notion of self-sabotage within a relationship in another installment of Ask Mayim Anything.

At the moment Mayim & Maya began to talk about monkeys and their behavioural responses at Maya’s lab work, the image of TBBT Amy Farrah Fowler’s “Smokey Ricky” came to my mind and a feeling of fondness and sweet nostalgie filled my heart! As every Tuesday, an amazing episode..AGAIN! Thank you MB & JC..& MS!💜

It was validating that Maya stepped up for spending some time in the future and the past. It is needed for creativity and self improvement. Like a personality strength, it can be overdone, but in it's self it is valuable.

I agree when it comes to music or art not everyone needs structure. Sometimes practicing a lot and listening to other musicians can improve the music. Too much structure is restrictive as well as less time for creativity.

I appreciate what Jonathan brings to the table. When I started hula hooping in 2003 there was very little instruction online so my friends and I just played and enjoyed dancing with the hoop. I was able to find my style without the influence of teachers teaching things their way. It’s why we love to watch kids dance-soul movement! I get you Jonathan!

Wow - what an amazing interviewee! I’m on the opposite side of the political spectrum (or more toward the middle, more accurately), but I’m constantly fascinated by hearing the different experiences & informed opinions of others. I don’t often agree on the road to execute the solution, but I often agree on the ultimate problem. Thank you for hosting such a phenomenal guest! Definitely looking forward to listening to her podcast in the future.

Mayim and Jonathan, such fascinating guest (even if her aproach to spending thinking time in past/future didn’t fully resonates at me, as it boost my anxiety..) But such multitalented and multifaceted diamond-kind woman! Kudos for her “Language LABELS” theory! And kudos too to Mayim’s great question about how to “download” the behavioural science to RL and relationships! Yayy!!! 👍🏼 About using third person to put things in perspective and not going crazy doing it, do you know that Julius Caesar wrote about himself at “The War at The Gallia” in third person? It surprised me a lot then (I read it in latin at High School) and I thought it was why exactly Maya says she does it now!!! And as a great desert to the episode, Jonathan hit the nail with “THE question” at 1:01:30. Amazing! Such an episode, guys! My Tuesdays addiction! 😉

MUSIC THERAPY: Could whoever screens these comments please suggest to Mayim that she interview a music therapist? I am a client and my music therapist helped save my life. If you need one example of the many forms music therapy can take, I have a small KZfaq channel that tells my experience of confronting mortality and processing emotions through song. I look forward to witnessing Mayim following up on this suggestion! 💜

Here are my thoughts about being "in the present" all the time: I believe there are some true things about this, but they don't work for me. I have always been a person who lived in the future A LOT. Partially, because that's just who I am and how my brain seems to work, but also because the future always provided hope for betterment. Living in the present for me is closely associated with a period in my life, in which I was so depressed that I couldn't think about anything, couldn't do anything and would be laying in my bed all day, distracting myself and crying. I was incapable of planing my future and I had no hope anymore. I never thought any further into the future, that to the next day. That's what "living in the present" is for me. Now that I can see into the future again, I gained hope. I need that. Living in the present is a stupid advice... (for me). Great Episode! I love you guys, thank you.

Loved it so much until as usual, when Jonathan shares his brilliance, Mayim instantly jumps in over him, does not acknowledge whatsoever what he just said, and instead chose, as usual, to “clarify” or “simplify” her take on what the guest said, which was totally unnecessary. Jonathan is actually more insightful than Mayim in most respects. I’m sorry Mayim is tunnel visioned on titles and academia, it really blinds her and she demeans her man in the process, when he is extremely relevant, insightful, honest, and capable to hold his own with any guest on the planet. I realllllllly hope he is checking her in private on her arrogant behavior on camera. It is getting so old.

Interesting person. It felt like she is well grounded and can count on a base of strong mental health (and close relationships). So, perhaps a lil far from the grounds some of us listeners and previous guests are, and then not easy to relate to? Anyway, I liked the bit about talking to ourselves in the third person. Some people I know, myself included, use that instinctively trying to motivate or incourage ourselves, I'm wondering if it happens especially when we haven't received it from others, and perhaps when we learn about self-parenting (something that for me made a difference)... Instead, I don't really get the novelty of a 'carrot-stick' approach as suggested for example about listening to your favorite music only after you get yourself to exercise... it's just that, the promise of something good coming after an effort. A lot in our culture works that way, both in families and the larger society. And I'm sure (from what she told us about herself) that Mayim is well aware of the risks of such strategy, since it doesn't play that well for people who go into restrictive behaviours when trying to solve their problems. I liked the idea about talking to great people's parents! Btw, I'd like you had chats also with people who are not famous. I wouldn't propose myself for that, too shy for a camera, but for example you could talk to some of your audience, once in a while, perhaps those who send you questions?

I know this is an old podcast but after listening to dozens of these podcasts now - I have to comment. Mayim, please stop being so darn rude to Jonathan. He is never allowed to finish a sentence, a thought. He isn't allowed to share his beliefs. It is insanely painful to listen to you cut him off constantly and talk to and about him like he is stupid and clueless. I've had to turn off multiple of these podcasts because it's so frustrating. Jonathan - you are such a kind, thoughtful man with so many insightful things to share. Please keep trying to speak up as I really enjoying hearing what you have to say.

The online course Choose again by Diederik Wolsak, Jim Kwik book Limitless, Jacob Nordby book The Creative Cure & Cynthia Winton-Henry book Dance the Sacred Art are all amazing tools to heal yourself. We suffer because we believe in the story we created as kids, (which changed our brain chemistry etc) about who & what we are and we live our adult lives based on that false narrative.

Let an old man say, you're a good girl. I have been trying to bottom line why I like you and Jonathan so much. You are just great kids. Sure your brilliant and insightful and generous with your knowledge, but so are a many people. And yes, okay, so you are talented which of coarse is a bit more rare especially included with the stated gifts. But I like you guys so much because you are a good girl and he is a good boy. Being upbeat and jolly doesn't diminish the manipulative nature of behavioural science. A government department manipulating society and in particular those least able to defend against it. e.g. prisoners. How she tells her personal history is also an example of perception management. To best sell herself.

Your comment brought these thought 2mind: I'm an RN & have been a bit alarmed re: the ethics of the use of, & educating of adults in communities to use "nudging" to get people to change their minds re: to using certain medications, or even re: social injustices--it seems manipulative & patronizingly disrespectful (espec as was to be used for commercial product marketing). Since much of the medical & other "Science" we are taught as proven facts are actually science-in-progress THEORIES, & we have a huge detrimental history of finding/accepting/& correcting our errors to fit newly discovered processes--this can be used to manipulate & "manage" people.
