This is what we needed. The original TTYD is literally impossible to get your hands on unless you're willing to pay insane prices for it. Mario RPGs are so fucking back, between this and the Super Mario RPG remake.

@@AngryWetYou do realize emulating a game you don't own an actual copy of is a serious crime though right??? Also some people might actually not know how, like most casual gamers just buy the official versions because they're just the only way they know how to play games. Also emulation doesn't support the original game developers who made the game and makes the game look less profitable in the company's eyes, causing different types of games to be made like Sticker Star or Color Splash. If it doesn't sell copies for the company then they really aren't going to want to do a follow up to a game they see as a "financial failure" even if the fans want it.

Plus, emulation barely affects the sales of a game to change its outcome for the developers. More people will always end up buying copies, than people emulating, so at the end of the day, the game will still be financially successful.

You should definitely try it. It took the base game of Paper Mario and just about perfected almost every aspect. The world, atmospheres and ambiences are gorgeous, the characters are all super charming and the new ones are very creative and inspired, and the story and gameplay are phenomenal. Between TTYD and Super Paper Mario, it’s hard to choose a favorite. They’re both just that good.

As someone who unapologetically prefers the old paper mario over the new ones, this announcement not only feels validating, but also makes me hopeful for the future of the series, for both sides. Even if it's mainly just a visual upgrade to an existing game, the fact that they left the artstyle mostly intact, and (I think) even added new animations to characters makes this feel like a serious acknowledgement of the fans of the old games that hadn't received anything in over a decade. If the remake does well, there might even be hope for a new game in the same style, in which case maybe the rivalry between the fans of the classic and modern paper mario games may come to a close. While I feel like the modern paper mario games would have benefitted from taking more inspiration from the first three games, I feel like it may be best if, going forward, the series would be split into two, with one continuing from Origami King, and the other continuing from SPM. Origami King did a good job showing how the concept of the characters being literal paper can be used for interesting storytelling, and it would be a shame for the concept to be scrapped just as it's starting to find its footing. At the same time, the stories, worldbuilding and stakes of the first three games work much better when interpreted as being the actual mario's adventures retold through a pop-up book, rather than taking place in a world literally made of paper that has no connection to or bearing on the "real" mario's world.

Going from what I'm seeing, I'm already pretty happy, with how they're adding those new sfx for each character and they're giving more unique animations to the side characters. I always found weird how Flavio was the last side character to have them.

I personally didn't mind the limited range of expressions in TTYD, but I'm certainly not complaining about extra effort going into a remake. It really feels like the best of both worlds, maintaining the "paper puppet" animation style that I've come to appreciate, while bringing in a bit of the added expressiveness the newer games have.

I love how we all first got a moment of shock when we saw the book expecting it to be a 64 remake and then when we saw rogueport we realized it was a TTYD remake and got a second moment of shock

It does, but man is it hard to find the og copy of the game without having to pay a small fortune for it. And that’s assuming you have a GameCube or wii (that supports GC games), both of which will cost you a pretty penny as well depending on where you buy them. In all honesty, I’m more happy that it’s not just a port, but has been revamped with such stunning visuals and graphics. I like that they gave the game a slightly more 3D look to help with depth perception. It will certainly improve some parts of the game

To be fair, while I love 64, that game has seen multiple re-releases on modern nintendo consoles, and is currently available on NSO, so a potential remake would probably need to do more in order to be "worth it," particularly if they aren't sure whether a market's even there for classic paper mario games anymore. TTYD, on the other hand, never got a port, never got a VC re-release, and is the game that people who complain about new paper mario games points to as the peak of the series, so if any remake will sell well, it'll be TTYD.

hmmm strange sticker star was my first paper mario game ever and i hated it and wanted to never play ANYTHING like that ever again, but i was at my nephew once and coincidentally when i entered the room he was playing ttyd, i saw the dragon flying over the screen and felt amazement like sticker star never did before, and so i bought colour splash, and while it was similair to sticker star, it was litterly just sticker star if it was ACTUALLY GOOD. been a paper mario fan ever since.

Not a man, but to me visuals aren't everything. TTYD has incredible characters but the overworld areas are so boring. So many long boring corridors, compare that to Sticker Star which may have generic environments but they're at least interesting in terms of their layout. There's definitely many aspects of TTYD I like more than Sticker Star, but the overworld is where you spend most of the game exploring and for me that's the most important part.

TTYD struggles with the pacing for me, but will give it a fair shot this time around. Also we are slowly getting to a world where a Mario and Luigi Remake/Reboot is not outside the realm of possibility.

@@MayroSMM I personally think that TTYD is also heavily overhated as well, mainly because the war that that came after TOK announcement, some new fans started to hate it due to the toxicity of some old fans. Very poor behaviour from both sides, honestly.

TTYD has its flaws, sure, but it was also only the second game in the series, released almost two decades ago. There's room for improvement, the problem is that it wasn't given the chance to improve. SPM was a very different game, and sticker star threw the baby out with the bathwater.

@@MayroSMM I’ve always seen it’s combat as M&L but slower. Maybe that’s because it mains for a more classic RPG format, but it’s just less satisfying for me and the backtracking is an absolute killer. Overall I would agree that it’s overrated.

@@maxparece4155 That's certainly fair. While I do prefer M&L's philosophy of "(almost) every attack is avoidable," I also like the way paper mario's combat was simplified without sacrificing depth. The smaller numbers for attack and health make it much easier to evaluate the gamestate and how many turns you'll need to take out a given enemy, which makes it easier to plan multiple turns in advance.

SPM feels like the last paper mario game that wasn't ashamed of 64 and TTYD. Aside from referencing the older games and reusing enemies from them, SPM also had its own fair share of unique enemies, even if they looked out-of-place next to the mario characters. It's a shame that, ever since then, the series wasn't allowed to be creative with enemy designs anymore.

I can’t help but agree with you. As excited as I am to play this thing, a big part of me is NOT looking forward to essentially humoring and becoming part of a fan base whose attitudes have done nothing but bring others and themselves down for the last decade. If this means Paper Mario is going back to the OG format, fine. But I’m not going to forget modern Paper Mario. Those games are people’s childhoods, too.

Am I the only one that hates the fact Nintendo did this? It’s probably the most overrated game of all time, and you can tell Nintendo only remade it to please the grumpy old people who insist Paper Mario hasn’t been good for 20 years.

On the bright side, there’s no reason to complain about Paper Mario anymore, now that they’ve got a freaking REMAKE of their favorite game ever in place of Paper Mario 7. Or at least, they really shouldn’t complain. ‘Tis a time to celebrate, not lament! (and we’ve been sick of the complaining for forever now anyway!)

It started playing the PM64 theme and showed a PM64 area haha, I think it was a reasonable assumption :p

@@MayroSMM okay right to be fair i watched it over again, notably they start with the book opening and the TTYD intro theme which is the first thing u see when loading up TTYD but then it cuts to PM64 music at the house ur right but that first scene the book flipping w/ whimsical music i immediately knew ttyd
