You're absolutely right, watching makeup tutorials is what made me more confident in painting faces so they look decent. You couldn't force me to paint in eyes though. Not a chance.

Very nice! In regards to thinning your paint to milk consistency is good advice for airbrushing, but certainly not for brush painting.

I really wish someone had’ve clarified the “thin your paints” advice to me when I was a kid. I wasted so much time building up like 5 layers of Dark Angels green to get a solid base coat for every marine.

I'm a real masochist. I have zero skill at painting minis, despite having tried many times over the past 40 years, but I can't help watching "how to paint minis" videos. Love how this turned out. Nice job.

Funnily enough in Finland vallejo and army painter are usually more available than citadel products since at times GW has had some major issues with shipping etc (since the UK decided to leave the EU).

You only thin paint to a milky consistency when glazing. The purpose is to add transparency to take advantage of underpainting. It's the same consistency as contrast paints which are also exploiting transparency to create the designed effect.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio2 жыл бұрын
True, but it's treated as near-universal advice - Reddit threads are commonly packed with 'THIN YOUR PAAAINTS' as a response to any question.
@hoteckkan2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. I'm sure I've said it before, but I love your teaching style and painting style. You're very approachable and warm and your models always look fantastic - how realistic everything always looks. Not as painterly or stylized as some of the other painters out there - which is also great, but your look is what I really want to get down.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio2 жыл бұрын
Thank you kindly! I've always thought of most of my painting as fairly workmanlike. It gets the job done once it hits the table, and all the usual flair and trappings you see others doing is the spice you can add to the mix if that's something you like the look of. Me, I just want to make the bolognese without the lid flying off. 😂
@hoteckkan2 жыл бұрын
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio You give yourself too little credit - one thing that you manage in your style is really selling the impression of the model being a real thing in miniature. I think a lot of other artists (talent and skilled as they are) end up developing a look that is much "illustrative" in look.

Very interesting, I've been on a long break from painting due to ruining a project and I gotta say, that comment on thinning paints resonated with me. I'm a little fed up with spending so much time trying to get a consistant layer when I could've just done it less as long as I get it off my brush. Thanks again! Though I do find it strange that they never released an "Smuggler" Han Solo in legion; it's always his endor fatigues.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio2 жыл бұрын
I guess it's in something to do with the scope of Legion. Han makes more sense as a leader in-game since I guess it doesn't really focus on small raids and smuggling operations, though that would make for a cool narrative element if you had a bunch of miniatures representing private security protecting a hangar from-... oh no, oh dear. It'd be so easy!
@joshconfer2092 жыл бұрын
The contrast medium mix would never have occured to me. I'm definitely going to try that. Also, why has it never occurred to me to prop open the citadel lids with a stopper. Mini looks fantastic.

This is another great tutorial, pity that these figures are too big (almost 1/48!), if only they were in 28/30 scale. I think that if they were made compatible with other minis could sell more

Yeah I'm always bummed out by that too. Same problem with the ASOIAF minis, which are otherwise pretty great. At least terrain is interchangeable with 32mm and 28mm

What a nice surprise to wake up to! Wonderful video as always :) The advice on watering down your paints was extremely welcome! As someone who only got back into the hobby a few years ago, I've never gotten good results with ultra-ultra-watered down paints, and found myself keeping my paints a bit thicker than "milky." But that left me wondering if I was doing something wrong to not be getting the best results with "properly" watered down. Glad to see that wasn't the case! As for the pockets on the back? I always thought those parts were reinforcing panels - sort of a cheap and easy way of stitching the vest's pieces together - or padding. And remember: Han shot first.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio2 жыл бұрын
Mrs Sledge suggests that the pockets on the back of the vest are for Chewie to keep snacks somewhere handy. 😂
@Sturmensky2 жыл бұрын
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio I stand wholly corrected; they're totally snack pockets and I refuse to believe any alternative xD

Thanks a big bunch for the video, Troy. Seriously there is so much in every video helping me painting my minitures better. I also have a 3D printer, but mine is not near good enough to print that level of detail. May I kindly ask you to do a walkthrough of you printing a miniture? Nozzle size, material and all that jazz? Anyway, thanks for all your hard work 😀
@SonicSledgehammerStudio2 жыл бұрын
This one's come off of a resin printer - no nozzles to worry about! I've done a couple earlier guides on 3D printing in resin which might be more use than me just listing print settings here, if that helps.

High standard as usual but the sculpt is inaccurate - he should have a great big red light sabre in his gut and be in the process of saying "aww you've stuck me u f***er ya, ye are no son o mine" or something to that effect if I recall that gonads up of a movie correctly. Correct me if needs be someone.

how do you maintain sharp points on your brushes?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio2 жыл бұрын
Rinse them regularly and don't use so much paint with them that it collects up near the base where the bristles are attached to the brush. Paint will dry up in there and slowly force your bristles apart so a brush will never keep a point. Sometimes, eventually, you'll just need to replace a brush anywaym

Welcome aboard! There's been a few videos which would work for Zona Alfa stuff - post apocalypse survivors, zombies, some of the Imperial Guard stuff - though I haven't done anything specifically geared toward the game itself. Something I might have to revisit!
