I was told, buy Japanese, and the car will last for ever. NOT SO.
I changed the oil and filter EVERY 10,000 miles without fail. Timing belt changed at 75,000 & 160,000.
It started using 1Ltr of oil every month. still did 55mpg (mixed motorway and city), 59mpg (motorway)
Finally at 175,000 miles the oil light would come on if the revs went over 1,500rpm. About 100 miles later the engine would no longer turn.
=== Conclusion ===
Crank bearing shells disintegrated, blocked oil ways, forced piston into sides of the cylinder, creating excessive friction, over heated, melted aluminum piston, scored and seized engine.
How to avoid it in future, I really don't know. Without stripping the engine, you can't tell. There was tiny aluminum dust on the oilsump suction filter. This would not have been detectable in the oil changes. Aluminum is not magnetic, so very difficult to find without some lab analysis. And why would you expect a problem when it was running so well???

This is a known fault with the mazda 2.0 and 2.3 diesel engine. The injector seals are not great and let gasses pass by which causes carbon build up in the engine which finds its way into the sump, which then blocks the oil pickup. When the oil pick up is quite blocked it stops oil getting to the furthest piston which is why piston 4 tends to fail first. It is recommended on every oil change to check the oil pickup to make sure it is clean. Of course most people will never check this as other engines do not suffer with this problem. It does look like the oil pickup was heavily blocked. If you check the material build up it will likely be carbon deposits. This is just what I have learnt from having a Mazda 5 2.0 diesel and alot of time reading other peoples posts on the web.

Exactly mate, i was about to write that,also you should adjust valve clerance every 60kkm, and to do so you need to remove the injectors therefore you would need to replace the injector seals, but people lack of knowledge of these engines leads to failures like that, if this engine was treated properly it would have seen mileage in excess of half a milion easily

Mazda's skyactive-x diesels suffers from the same issue. Although. 2 months ago they adressed this in Europe with a recall. (If im right they modified the injector seals to make them more thermal resilient, so gasses cant mix with the motoroil that easily due to thermal expension.) ... Steel changes shape under ''extreme'' temperatures.

Your engine looks like it was glazed over from either low quality oil or too long interval for changes. Oil must be changed at least every 10 000 km in an turbo diesel, valves check every 60 to 80 000 km, and you wont have an problem. Also a shame to strip a car because of engine? It happens, rebuild it and stick it right back in, drive on, no big deal.

/watch?v=sqQ5cfgAde8 This is probably the most comprehensive look to the common issues in a RF7J diesel. Just turn on the captions, even though not perfect, they still mostly make sense. Bought a Mazda 5 recently with a blown engine and just under 400 000km. 6 of the 8 rocker arms were snapped, oil had exited from the camshaft seal and ended on the timing belt. Turbo's oil path seemed to be clogged and the axle was snapped. No oil in the exhaust side, but lots on the intake side and in the intercooler. Camshaft bearing surfaces were eaten up, as was the rocker arm shaft from the underside. The engine turned fine with the starter, once I made sure nothing was hitting. Even seemed to have compression. At some point I'll probably tear into the failed engine to see if there is damage to the lower parts of the engine. I got another running engine for it and I'm making some huge investments to the car. I don't know how much miles the "new" engine has, but it had sat in a car for 6 years and was just occasionally started and ran. It seems that there are a lot of things to consider. Not sure how a non-OEM ACEA C1 oil will work (I bought a few cans of Eurol Excence), as the wrecker guy in the video says that only genuine Mazda oil is to be used in these engines. My guess is that the previous owner used something else in it. Though one of the injector bottom washers had leaked and the injector was really stuck in it's hole, so that might also be the reason why the engine died. All of the stationary surfaces higher up under the valve cover were covered in thick tarry soot.

All true - with the extra compression of a diesel, I guess there is a more frequent oil change needed from soot contamination. My mate with a Mazda MPS changes his oil as soon as it looses it's "golden" look. which is much sooner than 10,000 miles, even for a petrol.

This same engien was used in the Ford Focus, Volvo V40, Peugeot 307 and they all have the same issues with the fuel nozzles and the flywheel.. My current Mazda 6 (2.0 MZR (petrol) from 2008) runs flawless and running over 200.000 km's now without any issues.. You did not mention at which mileage you bought the car, but maybe the previous owner was not so good fro the car? Could this be an option?

Pretty sure the pickup screen was sufficiently blocked to cause this disaster. What was that material? Was is metal from the bearings? All big end bearings had had it with the brass coming through. What oil did you use?
@alanmann
@alanmann 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments. There was a fine silver like coating on top of the pickup screen, easily rubbed off with the finger. Not the black gooey stuff in the gauze. I suspect the silver deposit was from the piston, but could have been the bearing coating as well? I've seen oil bake/harden if there is a mix of diesel in the oil, but there is no DPF in this thing and it ran so smoothly all the time. I used semi-synthetic oil for a few years up to this point as it had started to use more oil than before. Hoped something slightly thicker, and with very regular oil changes would be okay. (It was pointed out in the MOT one year that it was almost empty, and got gradually thirsty from then on)

Common problem on 2.0 and 2.2 diesel Mazda's is filter in sump getting blocked, so not enough oil is pumped around engine. At about 100k miles, sump off, filter needs cleaning. This is clearly visible on this video
@skydive1424
@skydive1424 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting.... these things should indeed last a lot longer than that. For sure it was oil supply starvation and consequently overheating and seizing. Bearing material is usually grey so you’re probably right that the silver was piston. Interesting that the head was still well lubricated. Usually cams go first. So maybe a gallery blockage somewhere in the crank or block... But that’s water under the bridge now I guess. What are you driving now? For reliability your best bet is probably a early eighties Merc or Volvo, or VW. As all these modern cars are riddled with major issues nowadays. Lots of gadgets and bling though!

Suspect an oil flush when I changed the timing belt (75,000 miles) might have saved it. But it is always the question as to whether or not to do this on an old engine, as it can remove gunge that might be working as a seal? A visual inspection of the gauze would have been more labor than it was worth, especially as at the time it didn't show any signs of giving up. There had been a very slight loss in power, for about 6 months previous, but this could have been anything on a long list of possibilities at the time. Thanks for your comments.

@lloydb4529
@lloydb4529 Жыл бұрын
6,000 miles is 10,000km and the maximum recommended distance between oil changes for normal driving for this engine. Severe service -> If you pull a trailer or do short trips (particularly in a cold climate) change the oil twice as often. Many owners manuals will actually say this. Yes short trips are severe service. A cold engine has more blow-by of contaminants into the sump and a cold engine does not boil off the volatile contaminants in the oil. City traffic is also hard on oil changes as the engine does more hours of operation before hitting the oil change distance. Manufacturers claiming 15,000km oil change intervals are trading away engine life for a better showroom sales pitch. Expect cam chains to go at about 140,000km and the engine at about 180.000km - well out of warranty. I have been in this situation. Not again. 9,000 km max oil changes and full synthetic for me.

This engine has died from skipped oil changes. You changed the oil every 10,000 miles (16,100km). The Mazda specification is every 10,000km or 6 months whichever comes first. Modern engines have small oil passages plus when the oil filter fills it goes on bypass so the oil is not filtered and it chews out the bearings. Car manufacturers have pushed oil changes out a long way, too far in my opinion. Yes this engine has a soot problem and leaking injectors which necessitates more frequent oil changes if anything. In such a situation going from a recommended 10,000km to 16,100km is certain death for an engine

None of those were failures before mazda called me in to replace them. I've just driven my MZR-CD this morning and the engine runs like the day the car was picked up in 2004. Interesting comment - and to be fair, petrol engines have been around a lot longer than petrol ones. So I would imagine the 'fine tuning' of design is much better in a petrol. AND... who wants a car to last for ever anyway??? no business sense in that... durrrr.

@@alanmann it's not like that, diesel ones can last long but need extra care with consumables, petrol ones are more fiable because there are not so many consumables on it. And I guess that you wanted to say that Petrol engine was made first, Diesel one after. It's true but Diesel engine was made for big cars to move things from A to B, last longer but need extra care with consumables, Petrol one was made for small compact cars, even for racing, rather then for moving objects.

That is the biggest bunch of bullshit I ever read on the "Interwebs", right after "the Earth is flat" and "we never went to the Moon". The whole point of a diesel engine is that they are simpler, more reliable and more robust than a gasoline engine. All they need is regular maintenance. Oh wait!, every internal combustion engine needs that! What idiocy one can read on the InterNet - "gasoline is better than diesel" - that really takes the cake. Very few gasoline engines live to 175,000 miles, which is 285,000 km.
