BUY, LEASE OR FINANCE A MAZDA MX-30 FROM OSV: bit.ly/3zfAbRd
Mazda's first all-electric production vehicle, the MX-30, is predictably a Crossover. It's been conceived and created with the brand's well-renowned focus on distinctive styling, innovative technology, driver-focused dynamics and class-leading interior quality.

Background
Think Mazda and you think of engine technology - maybe the brand's famous rotary units or, more recently, its famed SKYACTIV-X powerplant tech. But can the company bring anything different to a full-electric powertrain? Well it's time to see because here, we're looking at its introductory EV, the MX-30, with its Zero Emissions SKACTIV-e powerplant.
The MX-30 is, says Mazda, the EV for people "who don't want to sacrifice driving pleasure" when choosing an electric car. Staying true to the 'Jinbai Ittai - car and driver as one' ethos - found across Mazda's combustion engine range, it's been engineered to drive more dynamically than any other car in its segment.
Driving Experience
Mazda has chosen to give this car a relatively small 35.5 kWh battery (the same size as the one in the tiny Honda e), so you shouldn't be expecting the kind of driving range you'd get in established EV compact models like the Renault ZOE. It's just 124 miles. Still, for the urban-based folk Mazda thinks will be most attracted by this model, that may not be too much of an issue. You'll be able to eke it out easily though because instead of all the power (140hp) arriving all-at-once (as it does in most rival EVs at this price point), Mazda has engineered the torque delivery to be more linear, which makes the car easier to adjust to for those from a combustion background.
The Japanese maker provides steering wheel paddles to enable driver adjustment of the brake regeneration rate - everything from very light retardation when you release the throttle to so much retardation that the car virtually stops on its own every time you come off the accelerator. The car also offers an artificial sound to indicate either acceleration or deceleration. Handling should be taut, thanks to a very rigid body structure, made possible by a bracing ring placed around the low-placed Panasonic battery pack. And to Electric G-Vectoring Control Plus (e-GVC Plus), which enhances chassis performance by using motor torque to optimise the front-rear load shift for improved stability.
Design and Build
The dimensions here are virtually identical to Mazda's CX-30 compact Crossover but this MX-30's styling is a slightly different expression of the brand's usual so-called 'Kodo' design theme, here apparently "emphasising the car's beauty as a solid mass". You'll be intrigued by the 'freestyle doors' (some unkindly call them 'suicide doors') - seen previously on Mazda models like the RX-8 - which are hinged unconventionally; the front doors open forward to an angle of 82 degrees, while the rear doors open backwards to an angle of 80 degrees. Peer in and you'll note the open spaciousness of the cabin and what is quite a stylish and driver-focused interior.
Inside, the sense of space is enhanced with a floating centre console that sits independently from the dashboard, while the use of environmentally-friendly materials has been carefully matched to meticulous quality and finish. Leather is replaced by a vegan alternative. The lower console incorporates a 7-inch colour touch-screen air conditioning control panel, and (in a nod to Mazda's founding as the Toyo Kogyo Cork Company in 1920), the Mazda MX-30 features cork-lined centre console trays and inner side door handles. Harvested from the bark of trees without felling, the use of cork and door trim materials that incorporate fibres from recycled plastic bottles aim to be perfectly suited to the ethos behind Mazda's first pure-electric production car. The boot is 366-litres in size - or 1,171-litres with the rear seats folded.

Would you go electric with the Mazda MX-30?

This would suit me perfectly - as long as I can install a private 7kWh charging wall box at home. My commute is a 34 mile round trip. I practically never do 100 miles in one day. I’m lucky if I ever do 50 miles. I’d rather take the train for genuinely long distance journeys. The world has changed - Mazda has adapted beautifully. The MX-30 is literally a premium product with a small battery, designed for city use. Designed precisely for me! 😊

It’s bold and funky. I’ve been to the dealership, the build quality and design would disgrace many German Prestige cars. I’m fine with the range even with a 50 mile commute it’s going to save me a lot of money. Ordered! 👍

I enjoy these in depth reviews. However, why does almost every car reviewer claim that smaller cars and small battery ev's are for town or city dwellers? Wrong, wrong, wrong! Rural users have narrower roads and lanes to navigate for which smaller vehicles are perfect. Most journeys are to the local small town from home for shopping etc. Other services such as dentists, car dealers and GP's tend to be 5-10miles away. A small vehicle with lower range (and price) are ideal for rural transport. Please stop calling them urban use only!

Its a lovely car, inside and out. But its really badly let down by a very small battery. Still, it would be a good buy at a certain price.. but not Mazda's price. I get the feeling its a bit of a compliance car except that they used it as an exercise in design. Ideally, they need to re-engineer the under-body. A bigger battery of 45-50KwHr would be fine. Bring the motor to the rear and create a large Frunk. I would give the same advice to Opel with the Mokka.

Instead of a range extender engine they would be better to make a small add-on battery in that space at the front to give it another 50 miles. One thing about this car not having a door pillar is that you can open the front door a bit then open the back door so almost certainly making it easier to get in and out of in narrow garages like mine. I wonder if Mazda have looked into that and considered that as a selling point as there are an awful lot of narrow garages out there.

Nice review. I’ve heard about some issues in the cold. Is this car battery liquid cooled to preserve longevity? Also, is there a heat pump to reduce need for a radiant heater which zaps the battery? Thanks!

Another 50 miles of range and I would have bought one. A realistic 100 mile range on motorways means I can't travel to see friends that live only 60 miles away without having to recharge somewhere which is just a nonsense. With the higher energy density batteries coming along I presume Mazda will installing more range because they can't sell these and will be offering a battery upgrade for a reasonable price.

Avoiding bling and excessive screens demanding attention demonstrates what future EVs will have to follow because many accidents are apparently caused by sensory overload from distractions. Mazda build quality is traditionally excellent but the gimmick doors remove central pillars and really could not be trusted as metal and weld points age. Also, reliance on cameras and warnings is frankly dangerous when a better solution would be sensible all round vision of the outside world using glass. The human brain is slower in interpreting camera and sensor 'views' than direct viewing by quite a lot and a simple fault in any replacement for actual vision/spatial awareness replicates driving a delivery van with dirty mirrors. Also the contrast between a too dark rear interior and full light from the windscreen is potentially dangerous. On the school run lack of light and vision out for children (or any rear passenger) could be uncomfortable and tense. Add to that the unacceptably short range and this Mazda's resemblance to the Austin Allegro and ask just who this car as aimed at.

I’m 63 years old, love technology though I’m equally cautious about technology overkill - however, I think you’re being way too negative about the MX-30. My present 2008 Prius Tspirit has a reverse camera - extremely handy when required, though I’m equally capable of parking without it. Technology as an aid is always useful. This is literally desirable on the MX-30. It’s literally a premium product - I guess only for the discerning motorist. A tremendous amount of thought appears to have gone into this BEV. I was first put off by the 124 mile range - then I started looking closer. The more I study it, the more I discover and the more I like it - now I literally want one. It’s got everything I could possibly want. I’m not going to drive from London to Scotland in it - those days are past me. I can comfortably live with the range for work and pleasure. It’s going to be a personal vehicle - not an Uber or mini-cab. I literally love it - and you know it’ll still be there when other brands are breaking down and have become liabilities. It might not suit your needs - but it’s NOT a bad vehicle. It’s the very antithesis to a Tesla Model 3 and way better that a small EV hatchback or even a Chinese MG - the latter which is Uber fodder. This is a private personal EV I’d be delighted to own. Most of those digital menu settings need only be configured once. You can then invoke command functions using voice control. You buy this and you do not feel cheated. The battery won’t handle fast charging on purpose - it will still be working reliably and holding a reasonable charge long after the cheap Kia, Hyundai, Nissan and MG EV’s are turning into troublesome money pits. This is a very good EV. What is an Allegro? 😳🙄 Never judge a book by its cover 😌
