Mazda MX 30 R-EV First Drive | Is it better than the BEV?

Mazda released the fully electric MX-30 in 2020 and it was interesting to say the least. Aside from the cork interior and quirky doors, it lacked the kind of range that most drivers would feel comfortable with in an electric car.
Fast forward to now and Mazda have added a plug-in hybrid version of the MX-30 to their range. While the MX-30 R-EV can manage up to 53 miles on pure electric driving alone, with the rotary engine acting as a generator the R-EV will get you as far as 400 miles, Mazda claim.
In this video I take a look at exactly how the R-EV differs from the B-EV, and how all this translates to a good driving experience.

One Reviewer pointed out that a car with no B-pillar makes it about as easy to get a child's car seat in an out as we are likely ever going to see. (Unless you have a humanoid Robot to 'Collect' your child, and make sure he/she is properly Belted In. As a Bonus, that humanoid Robot might break out a window, if the driver gets distracted and leaves the child behind while the car becomes a Torture Device.)

The opening isn't great to be honest even without the B Pillar. I'd love to see someone try to get their child in and/or out of a rear facing child seat in the back of one of these. Madness

The MX-30 has been discontinued in the US for many months; no surprise cos of its poor range. However, it is important to note that the MX-30 was not available US-wide, being available in California as the only state where it was offered.

I'm assuming that is the pure electric one? I imagine how well this plug in hybrid version would do

@@Naveed4Speed Yes, only the EV model was sold in California. I doubt the extended range model will be offered in the states.

Sounds like it was a compliance car to offset Mazda's ICE emissions.

@@David_Polak California has pretty tough emission standards, hence Mazda sold the MX-30 in that area.

I'm surprised that they are still offering the pure electric version. I thought this was the replacement. It would have been nice if you had done a range test to see if it really can go 400 miles.

Yeah, there's now a full electric and a plug in hybrid version of the MX-30. I'd love to do a range test with the MX-30 R-EV, it would go very well with my road trip content 👍

It weighs 1,806 kg which is more than the pure EV version

The all electric mx 30 had a pretty disapointing electric range so they have made this with less than half the electric range,oops now if they still had the 100 mile electric range with this system , success...what ev car makers seem to have forgotten is charging at home is the cheap to run and convenient bit, now i know people will say ,what if you cant charge at home, simple dont get an ev.

I think the most manufacturers are still not ready to commit to all-electric and it shows
