The 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Is A Shockingly Good Hybrid Family SUV

While #Mitsubishi still has some work to do on its reputation in America, a strong lineup of new products helps people forget about problems in the past. When the current generation #MitsubishiOutlander came out in 2022, the company borrowed heavily from the newest version of the Nissan Rogue. A year ago, the #OutlanderPHEV made its return and it got a power upgrade courtesy of a new battery pack with even more power and all-electric range. Its a good family SUV with a stylish design, well made interior, and plenty of space on the inside.

I own the 2023 Outlander PHEV and can attest that the Nissan bits are electronics only. It has a Mitsubishi engine and Mitsubishi single speed reduction transmission. Highly recommend giving it a test drive if you are even remotely interested in buying one or comparing it to the competition.

As a 2023 Outlander PHEV owner with the SEL package, I can say I am pleasantly surprised with the luxury touches this has compared to the current Rav4 (which I've driven) and the current CRV (which I traded in to get the Outlander.) We didn't buy this vehicle for a 3rd row, so the lack of room back there is a non-issue for us since we don't use it. Honestly, for a non-luxury brand, you would be hard pressed to find a better vehicle for the price. Sure, the Rav4 Prime has better performance and range, but there are still markups on those and it's simply not as nice as the Outlander on the inside. We drive on average less than 40 miles per day, so we use little to no gas unless we are doing longer road trips. The slow charging speed really isn't an issue for us either. Most days we are getting a full charge overnight using level 1 charging. Overall, I think the Outlander PHEV makes a lot of sense as long as you are able to charge it every night at home. Additionally, I've had zero issues with the vehicle in my first year of ownership. No squeaks or rattles in the interior and no unexpected trips to the dealership. Very happy with my 2023 Outlander PHEV 😊

@evelineprisanti5352 If you don't take road trips and keep your commuting to 40 miles or less then you can easily go months without filling up with gas. My personal usage includes road trips from time to time so we've probably filled up 6 or 7 times over the past year.

We have 18k miles on our 2023 Outlander PHEV, same spec and color as your tester. Love the car. Great ride and tech. Drive about 70% as an EV. On long trips with battery depleted gets about 26mpg, which isn't great, but about same as our 2018 Rogue SL AWD we had before. We charge every night with our level 2 charger. Went about a month buying no gas. Have been seeing more gas Outlanders but haven't seen any PHEV's. We bought used and paid $38k. Don't think would have paid $51k as new price, but feel was a great value for what we paid. We keep the third seat folded down and would probably only use for our smaller grandkids. Excellent review!

I regularly manage to get over 700km plus in range on road trips, which use the ICE a lot. Mitsubishi made a compromise with the drive-train by giving a more powerful rear motor and a full-EV driving experience over hybrid fuel efficiency. The pay-off is the driving experience AND better off-road capability than competitors. The CEO of Mits Australia took one across the Simpson desert with no mods other than under-body protection. Mitsubishi use the old 2.4 engine as it's a good match and has tried and true reliability being so understressed, the test-mule in the Japan proving ground has over 420,000km and is still going strong despite being flogged over gravel and through mud mercilessly. Other advantages are 240v/110v AC power sockets that have real-world usability for appliances and tools and the S-AWC is not just a gimmick, you can really feel it driving the car around fast sweeping corners (we have those here in Australia 😉)

I have had a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV for two months. I am surprised that I am getting 80km/ 50 miles on electric. I am 6'7" tall and I like the larger SUV. The 3rd row is useful for kids or small adults only. I have the SEL model. For most my trips are less than 40km/ 25 miles. I am doing 75% electric / 25% gas. I am getting 3.2 l/ 100km. I have both the Level 1 and Level 2 chargers. I live in a Rural area and I like the options that PHEV has Electric only, Hybrid, Gas only and charge only. I could not go all electric as there is not the electric infrastructure in my area.

I have a 2020 Outlander and it's perfect for what I wanted it for: Pack up 2-3 people and their luggage, drive to a convention, empty luggage into the hotel room, and then be able to take 6 friends to dinner, which that 3rd row is totally fine for. And be able to navigate tight parking lots. The only thing I wish my Outlander had was a plug. However.... With no sort of electrification, my Outlander gets 27 mpg combined. Which is just a smidge /better/ than this PHEV in hybrid mode. And when things like the Kia Sorento PHEV exist.... I can't justify the Outlander PHEV. Improve that efficiency? This is my next car 100%.

Nice video - and this is a rather nice car. My wife has a RAV4 Hybrid Limited (not a PHEV) and along with the RAV4 Prime this Mitsi is a strong contender for her next daily commute vehicle …some more tech detail would’ve been nice e.g., does the petrol/gasoline motor need to be manually ‘run’ occasionally through a full tank of gas by drivers who use only the EV mode for their daily work + grocery commute so that the petrol in the fuel tank doesn’t go ‘stale’ (the RAV4 Prime does this automatically every 6 months); whether the a/c uses the hybrid battery power to heat up the car or whether it uses something like the RAV4 Prime’s pump-based system that uses petrol/gasoline motor for heating; whether it can operate at temperatures lower than -25°C/-14°F etc (the RAV4 Prime PHEV’s systems don’t work once it is colder than -25°C/-14°F) etc.

@kh8937
@kh8937 3 ай бұрын
I live in a cold climate (Minnesota) and have not found that to be the case with my 24 Outlander PHEV. You can set it to stay in EV mode in the winter and a warning will display letting you know to exit EV mode if you need additional heat. The engine has its own cooling system with a heater core like a normal ICE vehicle and so when the engine runs/is allowed to run, heat from the engine will be produced and distributed when called by the climate control system. I believe many other PHEVs with a heat pump also use the engine’s cooling system to produce cabin heat.

Owning this for a year, the only things I've noticed is that the auto folding mirrors don't always fold back (one does and one doesn't). Apparently it's a known issue but is fixable by adjusting the mirrors. It's just annoying sometimes. Other than that my other main issue is that the steering is too light. Tarmac mode improves it however, but then you have to turn on the gas engine (tarmac mode is hybrid/gas only). I'm hoping eventually they come out with a chip update for this.

@2:32 You say "It all goes out through a one speed reduction gear transmission." That is INCORRECT, and shows a lack of understanding of how this hybrid system works. The ONLY time the one speed reduction gear transmission is engage, or is operating, is at speeds above 70 km/hr or 45 mph when the engine connects directly to ONLY the front axle, to provide additional torque and power to ONLY the front wheels, for high speed driving and/or acceleration. For the vast majority of the operating time of this vehicle the power and torque "goes out" from the electricity stored in the battery, directly to the two motors, and onto the road, via the axles and wheels. The one speed gear reduction transmission spends the vast majority of it's time being idle, or not used at all. Please don't say stuff that is untrue in your videos.

I leased a 2023 Outlander PHEV in October of 2023, it's a 2 year lease. I'm not dumb enough to buy one of these, too overpriced. So after driving one almost daily for nearly a year would I buy one or recommend one to someone? Heck no. To begin with you press on almost any interior panel and some exterior panels, they creak and squeak like it's made by Mattel. On the SE trim which is the one I have, the synthetic leather feels extra cheap and they don't even bother to upholster the inboard sides of the seats (where you can't see) only the outboard sides where you can. Cost cutting to the max. The ride with the larger wheels that in have is bumpy and nervous and you can feel the cheapness in the suspension. Maybe with 16 inch wheels and higher profile tires is the way to go here. You charge the car to 40 miles, in the dead of a NJ winter with the heat on that's only going to give you about 20 real world miles. The third row isn't usable, so it stays folded down permanently. In power mode it does kick out extra torque when the rear electric motor is activated so it's good for towing in that regard. There's a lot of weird stuff in the car, some afterthoughts here and there. I read through most of the owner's manual, the car is unnecessarily complicated, which, after owning other Mitsubishi products in the past, including a Mirage G4, comes as no surprise to me. When I first leased the car took me 2 weeks to find the cruise control button while I didn't have time to read the manual because the cruise control isn't labeled as such, nor does it use the international symbol for cruise control which is a tiny gauge with an arrow at about 10 o'clock. Experienced other software glitches like one time the A/C wouldn't blow cold. Had to pull over, restart the car and then it started working, same thing happened with the heat. They need to go back to the drawing board with this thing and finish it.

Have about 5000 miles on it so far. I get about 35-45 EV miles on a full charge if I'm not running AC. The temperature outside makes a huge difference in the range. Getting about 55 mpg on average with a mix of city and highway driving. It does do fast charging but it is through a Chademo port so you have to find a level 3 station that has Chademo. Honestly level 2 or 1 is usually enough as the battery isn't that big.

the phev version is 13k more expensive then the petrol version, 13k you can fuel up for 10 yearts, not worth it. and phev won't last longer than 5 years, after which, the battery gets worse. and owners start re-selling them. carry a li-on battery all the time, is the ticking bomb in the unlikely event.

"it shares a lot of Nissan tech, and that's a good thing".... In what universe?? As a warranty claims adjuster, I question every decision Nissan has made in the last 15 years. The only "good" vehicles they have are the GTR and the Frontier. Everything else is just forgettable rental lot specials that'll end up in a transmission shop.
