Last year I bought the Japanese-spec version of the Mazda2, which is called Demio. Mine is the DY series which preceded the DE/DH model you have. The powertrain is a 1.5 litre with 5 speed manual. The DY differs from yours mainly in the body. It's very functional, being much more boxy and upright. The rear seat slides fore/aft, folds with 50/50 split, and the base can tumble fold (when I get to replace the broken plastic strap). It has a robust folding parcel shelf also. The third brake light housing is not flush like yours, but is made of good thick material so doesn't rattle. The windows don't clatter when partially open. Being right hand drive there is no issue with a cramped pedal box. The rear windscreen washer is central and the wiper has continuous or intermittent modes. There is no cruise control, but to be honest, this is of little benefit in my country because of tight, winding and hilly roads, and drivers who don't keep to constant speeds on flat straight roads. The only dislike I had was the pathetic single tone diaphragm horn, but this has been replaced by airhorns. Once the cheap Chinese tyres the car is shod with are replaced with a good set of Michelins, the car will be just fine. Thanks for the videos.

DaedalusZero I guess it's because I still haven't gotten used to it. And it's really only annoying when say I have a bunch of stuff in my hands and I have to set everything down open the door reach to the middle to unlock the doors but then again it's probably because I've been spoiled by keyless entry.

What I dislike is the empty gap on the centre console near the transmission. Could have added a storage there. And also no cup holder at all at the back row, even the handgrips are absent. Weak steering rack is also a problem. What I like is the exterior design, fun, and the engine response.

I'm in the UK the mazda sport here is top of the range, multi function steering wheel, cruise, foglights, body kit, the tamura model is similar looking but 1.3 and no cruise. The rear wiper wash is a pain, I find the fuel filler lever on the floor a bit odd, but the car is nippy and super reliable and no cambelts, turbos to worry about. It could benefit from a temperature gauge. But I guess mazda just wanted a hassle free simple car that looked good when they made it, it's nice looking car compared to other hatchbacks of the era.

Sounds like an individual thing. Just gotta track down the noise and rectify it. Here in America “sport” is typically bare bones, lightweight, no options and “touring” (or the further grand touring) are more luxurious and have more options.

#3. It's the way the gearbox/center consol is designed. Japan drives on the left. This doesn't happen on RHD cars. With LHD your right food touches the centre console unles you drive with your leg slightly to the left and your foot twisted slightly to the right. It is like this constant thing resting against your leg. Not so important when using cruise control, but around town, I found it quite disturbing. The tank size is not big enough, for the size of the car. Could have been 5 litres more to get better range. For a small care it could be more efficient. Sold mine to a friend and it is still going strong after 14 years. The most reliable car I've ever come across.

On my 2009 mazda 2, the clutch pedal is slightly wonky. Releasing the clutch slowly, you can hear an audible "creak" as it slips slightly. This means that there isn't an exactly linear response, which makes gear changes more annoying than they ought to be - the car sometimes shudders or I rev too much when I'm not paying attention. It's my first car and I'm a new driver. Would you say this is a problem I should look into fixing? I imagine it would be expensive to replace the pedal.
@HiroshimaSpirit
@HiroshimaSpirit 6 жыл бұрын
I don’t think you’re going to have to replace the pedal. I’ve never personally dealt with this issue, but try adding some lubrication to the pedal assembly and see if the problem goes away. I also saw at some point that someone replaced the clutch pedal return spring and fixed it on their car as well. Maybe that will help/rectify the issue. 👍🏻

I test drove a 2010 model ,manual and i found the clutch very hard to push in. The car was good generally apart from that. I drove a 2005 Toyota Echo(manual) and it was easy by comparison. I ended up going for the Echo,despite having fewer bells and whistles. Much more fun to drive though.. I think you are being a bit fussy over minor issues. It's a relatively cheap car.

The lack of usable cubbies, the rear headrests must be down or you're blind at 4 o'clock position. And the absolute worst is the display. Idiot lights instead of gauges and LCD radio that blacks out with sunglasses on. Oh... rattling sun visor clips, too. Still my favorite car, and I've had many.
@Starfank
@Starfank 3 жыл бұрын
i finally fixed it yesterday, what a difference! I removed the clip, made a squared hole in a thick foam paper cut to measure, then I put it between the roof sky and the clip with a bit off all purpose glue. for the back plastic I put some liquid rubber around the part, let it dry and now all the rattle it's gone!
@SLOBeachboy
@SLOBeachboy 3 жыл бұрын
Even many high performance sports cars don’t have full instrumentation these days and you expected to get this in an econo-box subcompact people mover? Furthermore, the coolant temperature gages that have come on virtually all cars made over the past 40 years are no better than an idiot light anyway. Not only do they not tell you the actually coolant temperature but they are non-linear to boot. In other words, the needle just moves to the middle point when the engine reaches normal operating temperature and then it doesn’t start moving upward again until the temperature is at least 30 degrees above normal. So basically an idiot light would be just as useful. Believe me, I would love it if all cars had at least an oil pressure gage and a proper linear coolant temp gage that told you your actual coolant temperature at all times but that’s just not going to happen.

I own a mazda 2 and it keeps me satisfied . Anyway here are my dislikes : _The button of the trunk is tiny , made of rubber or plastic . Bad weather can make it crack , , water infiltrates causing short circuit and the trunk not to function . I have had this problem . Why electrical opening ? a simple mechanical handle is way better . _The window handle on the rear doors is positioned low . You can touch it accidentally with your legs or your objects , making the window to go down slightly .

The thing i really hate about this car is the fact that you have to replace the cam followers to adjust the valve clearance .Unlike a toyota where you simply replace the shims without having to remove the camshaft in order to do so . It cost $420 for the cam followers as unfortunate i could only swap around a couple of the existing ones . Also i had to wait 5 weeks for them to come from japan as they did not stock the ones i needed at the dealer or the national parts distributor ( In Australia ).
@HiroshimaSpirit
@HiroshimaSpirit 5 жыл бұрын
That sounds like your personal experience rather than a common issue. Any kind of valvetrain adjustment isn’t required maintenance like in a fussy Honda or something as far as I can surmise. One of our club members here is a master mechanic and many of us have over 100k miles and I’ve never heard of anyone needing to make those kind of adjustments.

If you're in a position where you can keep an eye on it, you can use the fluid more efficiently by timing it carefully. Engage the sprayer just as the tip of the wiper passes the nozzle on the downstroke, and the washer fluid will collect against the wiper blade. The blade then smoothly distributes the fluid along the window on the upstroke. Kludgy, but it works.

Well, the Sport really isn't all that sporty with the 105 horsepower. Why couldn't we get something like a 150 horsepower hotter version? Mazda has made some questionable decisions, but I love the brand still.

Slow.7 seconds. Really, it might be a couple of tenths quicker to 60 than it was stock with all the mods. I’m not trying to win any drag races, so I haven’t cared to measure.

@@HiroshimaSpirit I've never tested mine on a true flat surface but I figured it was around 7 seconds. If I'm not mistaken on paper the car is supposed to be like 9 or ten so it's still not bad. Your car looks sweet though.
@HiroshimaSpirit
@HiroshimaSpirit 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Considering that manufacturers and the press will absolutely abuse a given test car (far beyond what an owner is typically capable of or willing to do) to get the best possible 0-60 time, I don’t take much stock in it. The 2 has an advertised time of like 9.7 seconds. For an average person who isn’t going to abuse their car, round that up to 10-ish seconds. It’s just a number, and the car is way more than the advertised specs, especially the acceleration times.

@@HiroshimaSpirit Sometimes I swear it's more like 6 seconds and some change. I know it's not breaking records but if this were forty years ago, we'd be competing professionally. We nicknamed our Mazda 2 zippy, which seems to be common for little Mazda's.

These cars are so cheap I would just try to buy a manual one before going to the trouble of swapping everything. I own one of each and while the automatic is boring, the car itself is still fun and tossable. If I had no other choice but to have an automatic, I would have still modified it, but differently and to a lesser degree.

i have the 2012 model. what i don't like. the most basic dashboard. (no fuel percentage...just a 1980s most basic LCD with square dots that is used as a fuel gauge and no average mpg) this thing is twice as loud as my previous vehicle (1998 chevy blazer). i have to turn the radio on full blast to drown out the noise while doing 65mph. i live in Texas and during the summer, the AC at full blast barely keeps it cool. luckily im the only one in the car most of the time, so i just point every vent towards me. lol what was the deal with the manual air circulation switch? never seen that "feature" in a car before.
@HiroshimaSpirit
@HiroshimaSpirit 7 жыл бұрын
+imsobored04 You must have a Sport trim. The Touring trim displays all kinds of extra info in the cluster like average mpg, fuel range, outside temp, etc. I personally don't have a problem with a/c cooling the car or with wind noise. Even with a modified exhaust, I have no trouble hearing the radio at highway speeds. As far as the vent/recirc switch, thaysbjust how it was designed, I suppose. I'm perfectly fine with manually selecting which to use. It's a $13k economy car, not a Lexus.

yeah i have the sport version. driving on the highway feels like you might have a window that is cracked open. i don't have a problem with the vent switch either. just weird. i understand that it's a $13k car so i never really had a problem with it. it's a cheap sub-compact car. quality is good enough. i did find it surprising that Side air-bags came with it.

cheap car. tiny. 30-35 miles/gallon. side airbags included. crash test ratings are pretty good. i've had the car for 4.5yrs now. only thing i've had to replace is the battery (i like to sit in my car with the radio on during my lunch break. probably why it died on me). hopefully i'll get another 4.5yrs before i see that check engine light on.

imsobored04 Just because it's cheap doesn't make it bad...then there are mods you can do to change the way the car drives, mine easily does 100 on the highway. People actually want to race me all the time because they can't believe my little car moves the way it does...I just added stainless steel brake lines and OMG the stopping power is incredible!

My dislikes of the Mazda 2: -Auto transmission sucks for fuel economy, shifts are rubbery and gross feeling -Suspension has way too much rebound resulting in poor ride quality -Handling is incredibly overhyped and unremarkable, understeers very early and doesn't like to lift-off oversteer -Paint is seriously _thin_ and chips easily despite looking nice -Radio wiring seems poorly done, it cuts out when I hit a large bump or turn hard Personally I wouldn't get another 2, and wouldn't recommend it to a friend unless it was the manual for a good deal. I'd get a used Pontiac Vibe or Golf 2.5 before one of these.
@HiroshimaSpirit

-You bought the auto. 🤷🏼‍♂️ -Sounds like the dampers are shot. -Most cars understeer horribly on stock suspension. Drive better, THEN throw a $100 rear torsion bar on the same car and get back to me. -The paint is thin on Mazdas, for sure. -Radios are known to be hit or miss in these. All of these issues are correctable except the automatic trans, but buying an ancient design 4-speed and expecting performance is a failure of judgement. The rest is objectively cheaper and better handling than a worse Matrix or an out of warranty German car, but to each their own.
